NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
The prayer of one afflicted and wasting away whose anguish is poured out before the LORD.1 The prayer of the poor man, when he was anxious, and poured out his supplication before the Lord.
LORD, hear my prayer; let my cry come to you.2 Hear, O Lord, my prayer: and let my cry come to thee.
Do not hide your face from me now that I am in distress. Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly.3 Turn not away thy face from me: in the day when I am in trouble, incline thy ear to me. In what day soever I shall call upon thee, hear me speedily.
For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn away as in a furnace.4 For my days are vanished like smoke: and my bones are grown dry like fuel for the fire.
I am withered, dried up like grass, too wasted to eat my food.5 I am smitten as grass, and my heart is withered: because I forgot to eat my bread.
From my loud groaning I become just skin and bones.6 Through the voice of my groaning, my bone hath cleaved to my flesh.
I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins.7 I am become like to a pelican of the wilderness: I am like a night raven in the house.
I lie awake and moan, like a lone sparrow on the roof.8 I have watched, and am become as a sparrow all alone on the housetop.
All day long my enemies taunt me; in their rage, they make my name a curse.9 All the day long my enemies reproached me: and they that praised me did swear against me.
I eat ashes like bread, mingle my drink with tears.10 For I did eat ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping.
Because of your furious wrath, you lifted me up just to cast me down.11 Because of thy anger and indignation: for having lifted me up thou hast thrown me down.
My days are like a lengthening shadow; I wither like the grass.12 My days have declined like a shadow, and I am withered like grass.
But you, LORD, are enthroned forever; your renown is for all generations.13 But thou, O Lord, endurest for ever: and thy memorial to all generations.
You will again show mercy to Zion; now is the time for pity; the appointed time has come.14 Thou shalt arise and have mercy on Sion: for it is time to have mercy on it, for the time is come.
Its stones are dear to your servants; its dust moves them to pity.15 For the stones thereof have pleased thy servants: and they shall have pity on the earth thereof.
The nations shall revere your name, LORD, all the kings of the earth, your glory,16 And the Gentiles shall fear thy name, O Lord, and all the kings of the earth thy glory.
Once the LORD has rebuilt Zion and appeared in glory,17 For the Lord hath built up Sion: and he shall be seen in his glory.
Heeding the plea of the lowly, not scorning their prayer.18 He hath had regard to the prayer of the humble: and he hath not despised their petition.
Let this be written for the next generation, for a people not yet born, that they may praise the LORD:19 Let these things be written unto another generation: and the people that shall be created shall praise the Lord:
"The LORD looked down from the holy heights, viewed the earth from heaven,20 Because he hath looked forth from his high sanctuary: from heaven the Lord hath looked upon the earth.
To attend to the groaning of the prisoners, to release those doomed to die."21 That he might hear the groans of them that are in fetters: that he might release the children of the slain:
Then the LORD'S name will be declared on Zion, the praise of God in Jerusalem,22 That they may declare the name of the Lord in Sion: and his praise in Jerusalem;
When all peoples and kingdoms gather to worship the LORD.23 When the people assemble together, and kings, to serve the Lord.
God has shattered my strength in mid-course, has cut short my days.24 He answered him in the way of his strength: Declare unto me the fewness of my days.
I plead, O my God, do not take me in the midst of my days. Your years last through all generations.25 Call me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are unto generation and generation.
Of old you laid the earth's foundations; the heavens are the work of your hands.26 In the beginning, O Lord, thou foundedst the earth: end the heavens are the works of thy hands.
They perish, but you remain; they all wear out like a garment; Like clothing you change them and they are changed,27 They shall perish but thou remainest: and all of them shall grow old like a garment: And as a vesture thou shalt change them, and they shall be changed.
but you are the same, your years have no end.28 But thou art always the selfsame, and thy years shall not fail.
May the children of your servants live on; may their descendants live in your presence.29 The children of thy servants shall continue: and their seed shall be directed for ever.
