NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
1 There is indeed a mine for silver, and a place for gold which men refine.1 Habet argentum venarum suarum principia,
et auro locus est in quo conflatur.
2 Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is melted out of stone.2 Ferrum de terra tollitur,
et lapis solutus calore in æs vertitur.
3 He has set a boundary for the darkness; to the farthest confines he penetrates.3 Tempus posuit tenebris,
et universorum finem ipse considerat :
lapidem quoque caliginis et umbram mortis.
4 Dividit torrens a populo peregrinante
eos quos oblitus est pes egentis hominis, et invios.
5 The earth, though out of it comes forth bread, is in fiery upheaval underneath.5 Terra de qua oriebatur panis,
in loco suo igni subversa est.
6 Its stones are the source of sapphires, and there is gold in its dust.6 Locus sapphiri lapides ejus,
et glebæ illius aurum.
7 The path to it no bird of prey knows, nor has the hawk's eye seen that path.7 Semitam ignoravit avis,
nec intuitus est eam oculus vulturis.
8 The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor has the lion gone that way.8 Non calcaverunt eam filii institorum,
nec pertransivit per eam leæna.
9 He sets his hand to the flinty rock, and overturns the mountains at their foundations.9 Ad silicem extendit manum suam :
subvertit a radicibus montes.
10 He splits channels in the rocks; his eyes behold all that is precious.10 In petris rivos excidit,
et omne pretiosum vidit oculus ejus.
11 He probes the wellsprings of the streams, and brings hidden things to light.11 Profunda quoque fluviorum scrutatus est,
et abscondita in lucem produxit.
12 But whence can wisdom be obtained, and where is the place of understanding?12 Sapientia vero ubi invenitur ?
et quis est locus intelligentiæ ?
13 Man knows nothing to equal it, nor is it to be had in the land of the living.13 Nescit homo pretium ejus,
nec invenitur in terra suaviter viventium.
14 The abyss declares, "It is not in me"; and the sea says, "I have it not."14 Abyssus dicit : Non est in me,
et mare loquitur : Non est mecum.
15 Solid gold cannot purchase it, nor can its price be paid with silver.15 Non dabitur aurum obrizum pro ea,
nec appendetur argentum in commutatione ejus.
16 It cannot be bought with gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx or the sapphire.16 Non conferetur tinctis Indiæ coloribus,
nec lapidi sardonycho pretiosissimo vel sapphiro.
17 Gold or crystal cannot equal it, nor can golden vessels reach its worth.17 Non adæquabitur ei aurum vel vitrum,
nec commutabuntur pro ea vasa auri.
18 Neither coral nor jasper should be thought of; it surpasses pearls and18 Excelsa et eminentia non memorabuntur comparatione ejus :
trahitur autem sapientia de occultis.
19 Arabian topaz.19 Non adæquabitur ei topazius de Æthiopia,
nec tincturæ mundissimæ componetur.
20 Whence, then, comes wisdom, and where is the place of understanding?20 Unde ergo sapientia venit ?
et quis est locus intelligentiæ ?
21 It is hid from the eyes of any beast; from the birds of the air it is concealed.21 Abscondita est ab oculis omnium viventium :
volucres quoque cæli latet.
22 Abaddon and Death say, "Only by rumor have we heard of it."22 Perditio et mors dixerunt :
Auribus nostris audivimus famam ejus.
23 God knows the way to it; it is he who is familiar with its place.23 Deus intelligit viam ejus,
et ipse novit locum illius.
24 For he beholds the ends of the earth and sees all that is under the heavens.24 Ipse enim fines mundi intuetur,
et omnia quæ sub cælo sunt respicit.
25 He has weighed out the wind, and fixed the scope of the waters;25 Qui fecit ventis pondus,
et aquas appendit in mensura.
26 When he made rules for the rain and a path for the thunderbolts,26 Quando ponebat pluviis legem,
et viam procellis sonantibus :
27 Then he saw wisdom and appraised it, gave it its setting, knew it through and through.27 tunc vidit illam et enarravit,
et præparavit, et investigavit.
28 And to man he said: Behold, the fear of the LORD is wisdom; and avoiding evil is understanding.28 Et dixit homini : Ecce timor Domini, ipsa est sapientia ;
et recedere a malo, intelligentia.
