NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
1 My spirit is broken, my lamp of life extinguished; my burial is at hand.1 Spiritus meus attenuatus est,
dies mei exstincti,
et solum mihi superest sepulcrum.
2 I am indeed mocked, and, as their provocation mounts, my eyes grow dim.2 Nonne irrisiones circumdant me,
et in amaritudinibus moratur oculus meus?
3 Grant me one to offer you a pledge on my behalf: who is there that will give surety for me?3 Pone pignus pro me iuxta te;
et quis umquam spondens percutiet manum meam?
4 You darken their minds to knowledge; therefore they do not understand.4 Cor eorum longe fecisti a disciplina;
propterea non exaltabuntur.
5 My lot is described as evil,5 Praedam pollicetur sociis,
sed oculi filiorum eius deficient.
6 and I am made a byword of the people; their object lesson I have become.6 Posuit me quasi in proverbium vulgi
et conspuendum in faciem.
7 My eye has grown blind with anguish, and all my frame is shrunken to a shadow.7 Caligavit ab indignatione oculus meus,
et membra mea quasi in umbram redacta sunt.
8 Upright men are astonished at this, and the innocent aroused against the wicked.8 Stupebunt iusti super hoc,
et innocens contra impium excitabitur.
9 Yet the righteous shall hold to his way, and he who has clean hands increase in strength.9 Et tenebit iustus viam suam,
et mundus manibus addet fortitudinem.
10 But turn now, and come on again; for I shall not find a wise man among you!10 Igitur omnes vos convertimini et venite,
et non inveniam in vobis ullum sapientem.
11 My days are passed away, my plans are at an end, the cherished purposes of my heart.11 Dies mei transierunt, cogitationes meae dissipatae sunt
et desideria cordis mei.
12 Such men change the night into day; where there is darkness they talk of approaching light.12 Noctem verterunt in diem;
et rursum post tenebras properat lux.
13 If I look for the nether world as my dwelling, if I spread my couch in the darkness,13 Si sustinuero, infernus domus mea est;
et in tenebris stravi lectulum meum.
14 If I must call corruption "my father," and the maggot "my mother" and "my sister,"14 Putredini dixi: Pater meus es!;
Mater mea et soror mea! vermibus.
15 Where then is my hope, and my prosperity, who shall see?15 Ubi est ergo nunc praestolatio mea,
et patientiam meam quis considerat?
16 Will they descend with me into the nether world? Shall we go down together into the dust?16 In profundissimum infernum descendent omnia mea;
simul in pulvere erit requies mihi? ”.
