1 And Zophar the Naamathite spoke out and said:	1 Alors Sofar de Nahama prit la parole et dit:
2 Should not the man of many words be answered, or must the garrulous man necessarily be right?	2 Ne faut-il pas répondre à tant de discours, suffit-il de bien parler pour avoir raison?
3 Shall your babblings keep men silent, and shall you deride and no one give rebuke?	3 Faut-il qu’on se taise quand tu radotes, qu’on ne te remette pas en place quand tu te moques?
4 Shall you say: "My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight"?	4 Tu as dit à Dieu: “Ma position est correcte, je suis pur devant toi!”
5 But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips against you,	5 Il faudrait bien que Dieu te parle, qu’il vienne t’adresser la parole!
6 And tell you that the secrets of wisdom are twice as effective: So you might learn that God will make you answer for your guilt.	6 Il te dirait quelques secrets de sa sagesse, bien mystérieux pour notre intelligence, et tu verrais que Dieu t’a pris en faute.
7 Can you penetrate the designs of God? Dare you vie with the perfection of the Almighty?	7 Pourras-tu sonder la profondeur de Dieu, t’élever jusqu’à la perfection du Puissant?
8 It is higher than the heavens; what can you do? It is deeper than the nether world; what can you know?	8 Elle atteint plus haut que les cieux: que feras-tu? plus profond que le monde des morts: qu’en sauras-tu?
9 It is longer than the earth in measure, and broader than the sea.	9 Sa mesure est plus longue que la terre, elle est plus large que la mer.
10 If he seize and imprison or call to judgment, who then can say him nay?	10 S’il passe, s’il emprisonne, s’il fait rendre compte, qui l’en empêchera?
11 For he knows the worthlessness of men and sees iniquity; will he then ignore it?	11 Car il a reconnu ceux qui sont faux, il a vu le péché, il l’a compris, bien sûr!
12 Will empty man then gain understanding, and the wild jackass be made docile?	12 Du coup l’irresponsable apprend à réfléchir: c’est un ânon sauvage que l’on dresse.
13 If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him,	13 Reprends donc en main ton cœur et tends les mains vers lui,
14 If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent,	14 jette au loin le mal que tu faisais et que l’injustice ne s’abrite pas chez toi.
15 Surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid.	15 Alors, te sachant pur, tu lèveras ton regard, tu seras ferme et n’auras pas peur.
16 For then you shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed away.	16 Tu ne penseras plus à tes malheurs: un souvenir peut-être, comme des eaux écoulées.
17 Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning,	17 Ce sera l’existence plus brillante qu’un midi, où les recoins obscurs sont encore des matins.
18 And you shall be secure, because there is hope; you shall look round you and lie down in safety,	18 Tu te sentiras sûr, ayant une espérance; bien protégé, tu dormiras en paix.
19 and you shall take your rest with none to disturb. Many shall entreat your favor,	19 Personne ne troublera ton repos, et beaucoup chercheront à te plaire.
20 but the wicked, looking on, shall be consumed with envy. Escape shall be cut off from them, they shall wait to expire.	20 Mais les yeux des méchants seront enténébrés, il perdront tout moyen d’échapper: leur seul espoir est de rendre l’âme.
