1 And Zophar the Naamathite spoke out and said:	1 Sofar di Naamà prese a dire:
2 Should not the man of many words be answered, or must the garrulous man necessarily be right?	2 «A tante parole non si dovrà forse dare risposta? O il loquace dovrà avere ragione?
3 Shall your babblings keep men silent, and shall you deride and no one give rebuke?	3 I tuoi sproloqui faranno tacere la gente? Ti farai beffe, senza che alcuno ti svergogni?
4 Shall you say: "My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight"?	4 Tu dici: “Pura è la mia condotta, io sono irreprensibile agli occhi tuoi”.
5 But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips against you,	5 Tuttavia, volesse Dio parlare e aprire le labbra contro di te,
6 And tell you that the secrets of wisdom are twice as effective: So you might learn that God will make you answer for your guilt.	6 per manifestarti i segreti della sapienza, che sono così difficili all’intelletto, allora sapresti che Dio ti condona parte della tua colpa.
7 Can you penetrate the designs of God? Dare you vie with the perfection of the Almighty?	7 Credi tu di poter scrutare l’intimo di Dio o penetrare la perfezione dell’Onnipotente?
8 It is higher than the heavens; what can you do? It is deeper than the nether world; what can you know?	8 È più alta del cielo: che cosa puoi fare? È più profonda del regno dei morti: che cosa ne sai?
9 It is longer than the earth in measure, and broader than the sea.	9 Più lunga della terra ne è la dimensione, più vasta del mare.
10 If he seize and imprison or call to judgment, who then can say him nay?	10 Se egli assale e imprigiona e chiama in giudizio, chi glielo può impedire?
11 For he knows the worthlessness of men and sees iniquity; will he then ignore it?	11 Egli conosce gli uomini fallaci; quando scorge l’iniquità, non dovrebbe tenerne conto?
12 Will empty man then gain understanding, and the wild jackass be made docile?	12 L’uomo stolto diventerà giudizioso? E un puledro di asino selvatico sarà generato uomo?
13 If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him,	13 Ora, se tu a Dio dirigerai il cuore e tenderai a lui le tue palme,
14 If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent,	14 se allontanerai l’iniquità che è nella tua mano e non farai abitare l’ingiustizia nelle tue tende,
15 Surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid.	15 allora potrai alzare il capo senza macchia, sarai saldo e non avrai timori,
16 For then you shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed away.	16 perché dimenticherai l’affanno e te ne ricorderai come di acqua passata.
17 Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning,	17 Più del sole meridiano splenderà la tua vita, l’oscurità sarà per te come l’aurora.
18 And you shall be secure, because there is hope; you shall look round you and lie down in safety,	18 Avrai fiducia perché c’è speranza e, guardandoti attorno, riposerai tranquillo.
19 and you shall take your rest with none to disturb. Many shall entreat your favor,	19 Ti coricherai e nessuno ti metterà paura; anzi, molti cercheranno i tuoi favori.
20 but the wicked, looking on, shall be consumed with envy. Escape shall be cut off from them, they shall wait to expire.	20 Ma gli occhi dei malvagi languiranno, ogni scampo è loro precluso, unica loro speranza è l’ultimo respiro!».
