1 And Zophar the Naamathite spoke out and said:	1 Respondens autem Sophar Naamathites, dixit :
2 Should not the man of many words be answered, or must the garrulous man necessarily be right?	2 Numquid qui multa loquitur, non et audiet ? aut vir verbosus justificabitur ?
3 Shall your babblings keep men silent, and shall you deride and no one give rebuke?	3 Tibi soli tacebunt homines ? et cum ceteros irriseris, a nullo confutaberis ?
4 Shall you say: "My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight"?	4 Dixisti enim : Purus est sermo meus, et mundus sum in conspectu tuo.
5 But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips against you,	5 Atque utinam Deus loqueretur tecum, et aperiret labia sua tibi,
6 And tell you that the secrets of wisdom are twice as effective: So you might learn that God will make you answer for your guilt.	6 ut ostenderet tibi secreta sapientiæ, et quod multiplex esset lex ejus : et intelligeres quod multo minora exigaris ab eo quam meretur iniquitas tua !
7 Can you penetrate the designs of God? Dare you vie with the perfection of the Almighty?	7 Forsitan vestigia Dei comprehendes, et usque ad perfectum Omnipotentem reperies ?
8 It is higher than the heavens; what can you do? It is deeper than the nether world; what can you know?	8 Excelsior cælo est, et quid facies ? profundior inferno, et unde cognosces ?
9 It is longer than the earth in measure, and broader than the sea.	9 Longior terra mensura ejus, et latior mari.
10 If he seize and imprison or call to judgment, who then can say him nay?	10 Si subverterit omnia, vel in unum coarctaverit, quis contradicet ei ?
11 For he knows the worthlessness of men and sees iniquity; will he then ignore it?	11 Ipse enim novit hominum vanitatem ; et videns iniquitatem, nonne considerat ?
12 Will empty man then gain understanding, and the wild jackass be made docile?	12 Vir vanus in superbiam erigitur, et tamquam pullum onagri se liberum natum putat.
13 If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him,	13 Tu autem firmasti cor tuum, et expandisti ad eum manus tuas.
14 If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent,	14 Si iniquitatem quæ est in manu tua abstuleris a te, et non manserit in tabernaculo tuo injustitia,
15 Surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid.	15 tunc levare poteris faciem tuam absque macula ; et eris stabilis, et non timebis.
16 For then you shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed away.	16 Miseriæ quoque oblivisceris, et quasi aquarum quæ præterierunt recordaberis.
17 Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning,	17 Et quasi meridianus fulgor consurget tibi ad vesperam ; et cum te consumptum putaveris, orieris ut lucifer.
18 And you shall be secure, because there is hope; you shall look round you and lie down in safety,	18 Et habebis fiduciam, proposita tibi spe : et defossus securus dormies.
19 and you shall take your rest with none to disturb. Many shall entreat your favor,	19 Requiesces, et non erit qui te exterreat ; et deprecabuntur faciem tuam plurimi.
20 but the wicked, looking on, shall be consumed with envy. Escape shall be cut off from them, they shall wait to expire.	20 Oculi autem impiorum deficient, et effugium peribit ab eis : et spes illorum abominatio animæ.
