Job 11

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 And Zophar the Naamathite spoke out and said:	1 Cophar de Naamat prit la parole et dit:
2 Should not the man of many words be answered, or must the garrulous man necessarily be right?	2 Le bavard restera-t-il sans réponse? Suffit-il d'être loquace pour avoir raison?
3 Shall your babblings keep men silent, and shall you deride and no one give rebuke?	3 Ton verbiage rendra-t-il muets les autres, te moqueras-tu sans qu'on te confonde?
4 Shall you say: "My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight"?	4 Tu as dit: "Ma conduite est pure, je suis irréprochable à tes yeux."
5 But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips against you,	5 Mais si Dieu voulait parler, ouvrir les lèvres pour te répondre,
6 And tell you that the secrets of wisdom are twice as effective: So you might learn that God will make you answer for your guilt.	6 s'il te dévoilait les secrets de la Sagesse, qui déconcertent toute sagacité, tu saurais que Dieu tedemande compte de ta faute.
7 Can you penetrate the designs of God? Dare you vie with the perfection of the Almighty?	7 Prétends-tu sonder la profondeur de Dieu, atteindre la limite de Shaddaï?
8 It is higher than the heavens; what can you do? It is deeper than the nether world; what can you know?	8 Elle est plus haute que les cieux: que feras-tu? Plus profonde que le shéol: que sauras-tu?
9 It is longer than the earth in measure, and broader than the sea.	9 Elle serait plus longue que la terre à mesurer et plus large que la mer.
10 If he seize and imprison or call to judgment, who then can say him nay?	10 S'il intervient pour enfermer et convoquer l'assemblée, qui l'en empêchera?
11 For he knows the worthlessness of men and sees iniquity; will he then ignore it?	11 Car lui connaît la fausseté chez l'homme; il voit le crime et y prête attention.
12 Will empty man then gain understanding, and the wild jackass be made docile?	12 Aussi l'écervelé doit-il s'assagir, et l'homme aux moeurs d'onagre se laisser domestiquer.
13 If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him,	13 Allons, redresse tes pensées, tends tes paumes vers lui!
14 If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent,	14 Si tu répudies le mal dont tu serais responsable et ne laisses pas l'injustice habiter sous tes tentes,
15 Surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid.	15 tu lèveras un front pur, tu seras ferme et sans crainte.
16 For then you shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed away.	16 Ton malheur, tu n'y songeras plus, il laissera le souvenir des eaux qui passent.
17 Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning,	17 Alors débutera une existence plus radieuse que le midi et l'obscurité même sera comme le matin.
18 And you shall be secure, because there is hope; you shall look round you and lie down in safety,	18 Confiant car il y a de l'espoir, même après la confusion, tu te coucheras en sécurité.
19 and you shall take your rest with none to disturb. Many shall entreat your favor,	19 Lorsque tu reposeras, nul ne te troublera, et bien des gens rechercheront ta faveur.
20 but the wicked, looking on, shall be consumed with envy. Escape shall be cut off from them, they shall wait to expire.	20 Les méchants, eux, tournent des yeux éteints, tout refuge leur fait défaut; leur espoir, c'est le derniersoupir.
