1 And Zophar the Naamathite spoke out and said:	1 Prese allora la parola Sofar di Naama, e disse:
2 Should not the man of many words be answered, or must the garrulous man necessarily be right?	2 « Può essere che il parolaio non abbia risposta, e che il linguacciuto abbia ragione?
3 Shall your babblings keep men silent, and shall you deride and no one give rebuke?	3 Tu solo farai tacere gli uomini, e dopo aver scherniti gli altri, da nessuno sarai confutato?
4 Shall you say: "My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight"?	4 Tu hai detto: La mia parola è pura e sono senza macchia nel tuo cospetto.
5 But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips against you,	5 Oh! volesse Dio parlar lui con te, e aprirti le sue labbra,
6 And tell you that the secrets of wisdom are twice as effective: So you might learn that God will make you answer for your guilt.	6 per manifestarti i segreti della sapienza, i molteplici aspetti della sua legge! Allora capiresti che esige da te molto meno di quello che non meritino le tue colpe.
7 Can you penetrate the designs of God? Dare you vie with the perfection of the Almighty?	7 Pretendi forse di investigare le vie di Dio, e di comprendere perfettamente l'Onnipotente?
8 It is higher than the heavens; what can you do? It is deeper than the nether world; what can you know?	8 E' più alto del cielo, e come farai (ad arrivarci)? E' più profondo dell'inferno, e come potrai scrutarlo?
9 It is longer than the earth in measure, and broader than the sea.	9 La sua misura è più lunga della terra, e più larga del mare.
10 If he seize and imprison or call to judgment, who then can say him nay?	10 Se mette sossopra tutte le cose, o le confonde insieme, chi potrà dirgli nulla?
11 For he knows the worthlessness of men and sees iniquity; will he then ignore it?	11 Egli ben conosce la vanità degli uomini ed è possibile che vedendo l'iniquità non se ne curi?
12 Will empty man then gain understanding, and the wild jackass be made docile?	12 L'uomo stolto si leva in superbia, e si crede nato libero come il puledro dell'asino salvatico.
13 If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him,	13 Ma se tu, che hai indurato il cuore nello stendere le mani verso di lui,
14 If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent,	14 toglierai l'iniquità dalla tua mano, e non farai rimaner l'ingiustizia nella tua dimora,
15 Surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid.	15 allora potrai alzare la tua faccia senza macchia, sarai incrollabile e senza paura,
16 For then you shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed away.	16 dimenticherai la miseria; te ne ricorderai come d'acqua passata.
17 Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning,	17 Sul far della sera ti sorgerà una specie di luce meridiana, e quando ti crederai finito, sorgerai come la stella del mattino.
18 And you shall be secure, because there is hope; you shall look round you and lie down in safety,	18 Sarai pieno di fiducia per la speranza che ti attende, e anche sotterrato dormirai tranquillo.
19 and you shall take your rest with none to disturb. Many shall entreat your favor,	19 Riposerai, e non verrà nessuno a spaventarti, e moltissimi supplicheranno la tua faccia.
20 but the wicked, looking on, shall be consumed with envy. Escape shall be cut off from them, they shall wait to expire.	20 Ma gli occhi degli empi verranno meno, non vi sarà scampo per essi, e la loro speranza diverrà l'abominazione della loro anima ».
