1 Worte Agurs, des Sohnes Jakes, aus Massa: "Ein Ausspruch des Mannes Laïtiël (Gottmüher): Ich mühte mich ab mit Gott und erliege.	1 The words of Gatherer the son of Vomiter. The vision which the man spoke with whom God is, and who being strengthened by God, abiding with him, said:
2 Ich bin ja zu dumm für einen Menschen, und nicht einmal menschliche Einsicht besitze ich.	2 I am the most foolish of men, and the wisdom of men is not with me.
3 Auch habe ich Weisheit nicht gelernt, noch kenne ich das Wissen des Heiligsten.	3 I have not learned wisdom, and have not known the science of saints.
4 Wer stieg zum Himmel empor und fuhr hernieder? Wer hat den Wind gefangen in seiner Faust? Wer band das Wasser in ein Gewand? Wer hat alle Enden der Erde errichtet? Wie heißt er doch, und wie heißt sein Sohn? Du weißt es ja wohl!" -	4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, and descended? who hath held the wind in his hands? who hath bound up the waters together as in a garment? who hath raised up all the borders of the earth? what is his name, and what is the name of his son, if thou knowest?
5 Bewährt ist jede Rede Gottes; ein Schild ist er für die, die zu ihm fliehen.	5 Every word of God is fire tried: he is a buckler to them that hope in him.
6 An seine Worte füge nichts mehr an, sonst überführt er dich als einen Lügner.	6 Add not any thing to his words, lest thou be reproved, and found a liar:
7 Ein Doppeltes erflehe ich von dir, versage es mir nicht in meinem Leben:	7 Two things I have asked of thee, deny them not to me before I die.
8 Der Falschheit Lügenwort halt fern von mir, auch Armut oder Reichtum sollst du mir nicht geben! Schenk nur an Brot, soviel mir not!	8 Remove far from me vanity, and lying words. Give me neither beggary, nor riches: give me only the necessaries of life:
9 Damit ich, reich gesättigt, nicht zum Leugner werde und "Wer ist denn der Herr?" im Herzen sage; damit ich in der Armut nicht zum Diebe werde und meines Gottes Namen anzugreifen wage.	9 Lest perhaps being filled, I should be tempted to deny, and say: Who is the Lord? or being compelled by poverty, I should steal, and forswear the name of my God.
10 Verleumde nicht den Knecht bei seinem Herrn, damit er dir nicht flucht und du es büßen mußt!	10 Accuse not a servant to his master, lest he curse thee, and thou fall.
11 Ein Geschlecht, das seinem Vater flucht, von seiner Mutter nicht mit Ehrfurcht redet,	11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.
12 ein Geschlecht, nach seiner Meinung rein, und doch nicht rein von seinem Schmutze,	12 A generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet are not washed from their filthiness.
13 ein Geschlecht - wie stolz sind seine Augen, wie überheblich seine Wimpern!	13 A generation, whose eyes are lofty, and their eyelids lifted up on high.
14 Ein Geschlecht, des Zähne Schwerter sind und Messer sein Gebiß, zu tilgen aus dem Land die Armen, die Schwachen aus dem Kreis der Menschen.	14 A generation, that for teeth hath swords, and grindeth with their jaw teeth, to devour the needy from off the earth, and the poor from among men.
15 Der Blutegel hat zwei Töchter: Gib, gib! - Drei sind es, die nie satt bekommen, vier sagen nie: "Genug!"	15 The horseleech hath two daughters that say: Bring, bring. There are three things that never are satisfied, and the fourth never saith: It is enough.
16 Das Totenreich, der unfruchtbare Mutterschoß, die Erde, die des Wassers niemals satt wird, das Feuer, das nie sagt: "Genug!"	16 Hell, and the mouth of the womb, and the earth which is not satisfied with water: and the fire never saith: It is enough.
17 Ein Auge, das des Vaters spottet, verachtet seine greise Mutter, das hacken Raben aus am Bach, die jungen Adler fressen es.	17 The eye that mocketh at his father, and that despiseth the labour of his mother in bearing him, let the ravens of the brooks pick it out, and the young eagles eat it.
18 Drei sind es, die zu wunderbar für mich, vier, die ich nicht begreifen kann:	18 Three things are hard to me, and the fourth I am utterly ignorant of.
19 der Weg des Adlers an dem Himmel, der Weg der Schlange über Felsen, des Schiffes Weg auf hoher See, des Mannes Weg bei einer jungen Frau.	19 The way of an eagle in the air, the way of a serpent upon a rock, the way of a ship in the midst of the sea, and the way of a man in youth.
20 So ist der Weg der Ehebrecherin: Sie ißt und wischt den Mund sich ab und spricht dabei: "Ich tat nichts Schlechtes!"	20 Such is also the way of an adulterous woman, who eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith: I have done no evil.
21 Unter dreien bebt die Erde, bei vieren kann sie nicht bestehen:	21 By three things the earth is disturbed, and the fourth it cannot bear:
22 Bei einem Sklaven, wenn er König wird, und einem Toren, wenn er Brot in Fülle hat,	22 By a slave when he reigneth: by a fool when he is filled with meat:
23 bei einer ehedem verschmähten Frau, wenn sie zur Heirat kommt, und einer Magd, wenn sie verdrängt hat ihre Herrin.	23 By an odious woman when she is married: and by a bondwoman when she is heir to her mistress.
24 Vier sind die Kleinsten auf Erden und dennoch die Klügsten der Weisen:	24 There are four very little things of the earth, and they are wiser than the wise:
25 Die Ameisen sind ein Volk ohne Macht und besorgen sich trotzdem im Sommer ihr Futter.	25 The ants, a feeble people, which provide themselves food in the harvest:
26 Die Klippdachse sind ein Volk ohne Stärke und bauen sich dennoch im Fels ihre Wohnung.	26 The rabbit, a weak people, which maketh its bed in the rock:
27 Die Heuschrecken haben bei sich keinen König und ziehen doch alle geordnet einher.	27 The locust hath no king, yet they all go out by their bands.
28 Die Eidechse läßt sich mit Händen ergreifen, und dennoch verweilt sie in Königspalästen.	28 The stellio supporteth itself on hands, and dwelleth in kings' houses.
29 Drei sind es, die stattlich schreiten, und vier, die stattlich marschieren:	29 There are three things, which go well, and the fourth that walketh happily:
30 der Löwe, der Held aller Tiere, der auch vor niemandem kehrtmacht,	30 A lion, the strongest of beasts, who hath no fear of any thing he meeteth:
31 der Hahn, der stolziert, und der Leitbock und schließlich der König, der wie ein Gott sich erhebt vor dem Volke.	31 A cock girded about the loins: and a ram: and a king, whom none can resist.
32 Benahmst du dich als Tor beim öffentlichen Auftritt, und wenn du dich besinnst, leg auf den Mund die Hand!	32 There is that hath appeared a fool after he was lifted up on high: for if he had understood, he would have laid his hand upon his mouth.
33 Denn stößt man Milch, so bringt dies Butter, stößt man die Nase, bringt dies Blut, stößt man den Zorn, so bringt dies Streit hervor.	33 And he that strongly squeezeth the papa to bring out milk, straineth out butter: and he that violently bloweth his nose, bringeth out blood: and he that provoketh wrath bringeth forth strife.
