Epístola aos Gálatas 5

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 É para que sejamos homens livres que Cristo nos libertou. Ficai, portanto, firmes e não vos submetais outra vez ao jugo da escravidão.	1 Christ set us free, so that we should remain free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be fastenedagain to the yoke of slavery.
2 Eis que eu, Paulo, vos declaro: se vos circuncidardes, de nada vos servirá Cristo.	2 I, Paul, give you my word that if you accept circumcision, Christ wil be of no benefit to you at al .
3 E atesto novamente, a todo homem que se circuncidar: ele está obrigado a observar toda a lei.	3 I give my assurance once again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is under obligation tokeep the whole Law;
4 Já estais separados de Cristo, vós que procurais a justificação pela lei. Decaístes da graça.	4 once you seek to be reckoned as upright through the Law, then you have separated yourself fromChrist, you have fal en away from grace.
5 Quanto a nós, é espiritualmente, da fé, que aguardamos a justiça esperada.	5 We are led by the Spirit to wait in the confident hope of saving justice through faith,
6 Estar circuncidado ou incircunciso de nada vale em Cristo Jesus, mas sim a fé que opera pela caridade.	6 since in Christ Jesus it is not being circumcised or being uncircumcised that can effect anything -- onlyfaith working through love.
7 Corríeis bem. Quem, pois, vos cortou os passos para não obedecerdes à verdade?	7 You began your race wel ; who came to obstruct you and stop you obeying the truth?
8 Esta sugestão não vem daquele que vos chama.	8 It was certainly not any prompting from him who called you!
9 Um pouco de fermento leveda toda a massa.	9 A pinch of yeast ferments the whole batch.
10 Tenho confiança no Senhor a vosso respeito, que de maneira alguma mudareis de sentir. Portanto, quem vos perturbar responderá por isto, seja quem for.	10 But I feel sure that, united in the Lord, you wil not be led astray, and that anyone who makes troublewith you will be condemned, no matter who he is.
11 Se é verdade, irmãos, que ainda prego a circuncisão, por que, então, sou perseguido? Assim o escândalo da cruz teria cessado!	11 And I, brothers -- if I were stil preaching circumcision, why should I still be persecuted? For then theobstacle which is the cross would have no point any more.
12 Oxalá acabem por mutilar-se os que vos inquietam!	12 I could wish that those who are unsettling you would go further and mutilate themselves.
13 Vós, irmãos, fostes chamados à liberdade. Não abuseis, porém, da liberdade como pretexto para prazeres carnais. Pelo contrário, fazei-vos servos uns dos outros pela caridade,	13 After al , brothers, you were called to be free; do not use your freedom as an opening for self-indulgence, but be servants to one another in love,
14 porque toda a lei se encerra num só preceito: Amarás o teu próximo como a ti mesmo {Lv 19,18}.	14 since the whole of the Law is summarised in the one commandment: You must love your neighbour asyourself.
15 Mas, se vos mordeis e vos devorais, vede que não acabeis por vos destruirdes uns aos outros.	15 If you go snapping at one another and tearing one another to pieces, take care: you will be eaten up byone another.
16 Digo, pois: deixai-vos conduzir pelo Espírito, e não satisfareis os apetites da carne.	16 Instead, I tel you, be guided by the Spirit, and you wil no longer yield to self-indulgence.
17 Porque os desejos da carne se opõem aos do Espírito, e estes aos da carne; pois são contrários uns aos outros. É por isso que não fazeis o que quereríeis.	17 The desires of self-indulgence are always in opposition to the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are inopposition to self-indulgence: they are opposites, one against the other; that is how you are prevented fromdoing the things that you want to.
18 Se, porém, vos deixais guiar pelo Espírito, não estais sob a lei.	18 But when you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.
19 Ora, as obras da carne são estas: fornicação, impureza, libertinagem,	19 When self-indulgence is at work the results are obvious: sexual vice, impurity, and sensuality,
20 idolatria, superstição, inimizades, brigas, ciúmes, ódio, ambição, discórdias, partidos,	20 the worship of false gods and sorcery; antagonisms and rivalry, jealousy, bad temper and quarrels,disagreements,
21 invejas, bebedeiras, orgias e outras coisas semelhantes. Dessas coisas vos previno, como já vos preveni: os que as praticarem não herdarão o Reino de Deus!	21 factions and malice, drunkenness, orgies and al such things. And about these, I tel you now as I havetold you in the past, that people who behave in these ways wil not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 Ao contrário, o fruto do Espírito é caridade, alegria, paz, paciência, afabilidade, bondade, fidelidade,	22 On the other hand the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness,
23 brandura, temperança. Contra estas coisas não há lei.	23 gentleness and self-control; no law can touch such things as these.
24 Pois os que são de Jesus Cristo crucificaram a carne, com as paixões e concupiscências.	24 All who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified self with al its passions and its desires.
25 Se vivemos pelo Espírito, andemos também de acordo com o Espírito.	25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let our behaviour be guided by the Spirit
26 Não sejamos ávidos da vanglória. Nada de provocações, nada de invejas entre nós.	26 and let us not be conceited or provocative and envious of one another.
