BIBBIA TINTORI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Allora il Signore parlò a Giobbe di mezzo a un turbine, e disse:	1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:
2 « Chi è costui che infarcisce sentenze in ragionamenti da ignorante?	2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?
3 cingiti da uomo forte ai fianchi: io t'interrogherò, e tu rispondimi.	3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!
4 Dov'eri tu quando io gettavo le fondamenta della terra? Dimmelo, se hai tanta intelligenza.	4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!
5 Sai tu chi ne fissò le misure? Chi tese sovr'essa il regolo?	5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?
6 Sopra dì che poggiano le sue basi? O chi pose la sua pietra angolare,	6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone
7 quando a me cantavano di concerto le stelle del mattino e plaudivano tutti i figli di Dio?	7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?
8 Chi rinchiuse con porte il mare, quando eruppe come uscendo dal seno materno?	8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,
9 Quando io lo rivestii di nuvole e lo avvolsi nella caligine come in fasce?	9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;
10 Quando gli tracciai i miei confini, misi sbarre e porte,	10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?
11 e dissi: Fin qui verrai e non oltre: qui frangerai gli orgogliosi tuoi flutti?	11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'
12 Hai tu mai, in vita tua, comandato al mattino? Hai mostrato all'aurora il suo luogo?	12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,

17 Forse ti sono state aperte le porte della morte? Le porte tenebrose le hai viste?	17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?

26 per far piovere sopra la terra desolata, sopra il deserto dove non dimora alcun mortale,	26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,
27 per inondare la solitudine inaccessibile e farvi germinare l'erba verdeggiante?	27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?
28 Chi è il padre della pioggia? Chi generò le stille della rugiada?	28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?
29 Da qual seno uscì il ghiaccio, e la brina del cielo chi l'ha generata?	29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,
30 Le acque s'induriscono come pietra e la superficie dell'abisso diventa solida.	30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?
31 Potrai forse tu unire le brillanti stelle delle Pleiadi o interrompere il corso di Arturo?	31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?
32 Sei forse tu che fai apparire a suo tempo la stella del mattino e fai nascere Vespero sopra i figli della terra?	32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?
33 Conosci forse l'ordine del cielo e potrai spiegare la sua influenza sulla terra?	33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?
34 Alzerai la tua voce alla nube e ti ricoprirà l'acquazzone?	34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?
35 Manderai tu le folgori, ed esse andranno, e al ritorno ti diranno: Eccoci?	35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?
