1 « Feci patto coi miei occhi di non pensare neppure ad una vergine.	1 If I have made an agreement with my eyes and entertained any thoughts against a maiden;
2 Che parte allora avrebbe di lassù Dio per me, e qual eredità avrebbe l'Onnipotente dall'alto?	2 But what is man's lot from God above, his inheritance from the Almighty on high?
3 Non è forse stabilita la perdizione pel malvagio e la diseredazione per chi opera l'iniquità?	3 Is it not calamity for the unrighteous, and woe for evildoers?
4 Non vede Egli la mia condotta, e non conta tutti i miei passi?	4 Does he not see my ways, and number all my steps?
5 Se camminai nella menzogna, se il mio piede corse alla frode,	5 If I have walked in falsehood and my foot has hastened to deceit;
6 (mi pesi Dio su giusta bilancia e riconosca la mia integrità);	6 Let God weigh me in the scales of justice; thus will he know my innocence!
7 se il mio piede ha fuorviato, se dietro ai miei occhi andò il mio cuore, se alle mie mani s'attaccò qualche macchia,	7 If my steps have turned out of the way, and my heart has followed my eyes, or any stain clings to my hands,
8 io semini ed un altro mangi, e la mia progenie sia sradicata.	8 Then may I sow, but another eat of it, or may my planting be rooted up!
9 Se il mio cuore è stato sedotto per una donna, se ho insidiato alla porta del mio amico,	9 If my heart has been enticed toward a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door;
10 sia abbandonata ad un altro la mia moglie e serva all'altrui libidine.	10 Then may my wife grind for another, and may others cohabit with her!
11 Ciò però è delitto nefando e grandissima iniquità,	11 For that would be heinous, a crime to be condemned;
12 è fuoco che divora fino alla perdizione e distrugge ogni rampollo.	12 A fire that should burn down to the abyss till it consumed all my possessions to the roots.
13 Se sdegnai andare in giudizio col mio servo e colla mia serva quando erano in lite con me,	13 Had I refused justice to my manservant or to my maid, when they had a claim against me,
14 che dovrei fare quando Dio si leverà a giudicare? Quando mi interrogherà, che potrei rispondere?	14 What then should I do when God rose up; what could I answer when he demanded an account?
15 Egli che fece me nel seno materno non fece forse anche lui? Non ci ha formati nel seno della madre il medesimo Dio?	15 Did not he who made me in the womb make him? Did not the same One fashion us before our birth?
16 Se negai ai poveri quanto chiedevano, se feci aspettare gli occhi della vedova;	16 If I have denied anything to the poor, or allowed the eyes of the widow to languish
17 se mangiai da solo il mio pezzo di pane, e non ne feci parte all'orfano,	17 While I ate my portion alone, with no share in it for the fatherless,
18 (chè la misericordia crebbe meco dalla mia infanzia e con me uscì dal seno di mia madre);	18 Though like a father God has reared me from my youth, guiding me even from my mother's womb--
19 e non guardai pietoso colui che periva per mancanza di vesti e il povero che non aveva da coprirsi,	19 If I have seen a wanderer without clothing, or a poor man without covering,
20 se i suoi fianchi non mi han benedetto, se egli non si è riscaldato colla lana delle mie pecore;	20 Whose limbs have not blessed me when warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
21 se alzai la mano contro l'orfano, anche quando mi vedevo superiore alla porta,	21 If I have raised my hand against the innocent because I saw that I had supporters at the gate--
22 il mio omero si stacchi dalla sua giuntura, il mio braccio vada in frantumi colle sue ossa.	22 Then may my arm fall from the shoulder, my forearm be broken at the elbow!
23 io però ebbi sempre timore di Dio come di flutti sopra me sospesi, e non ne avrei potuto sopportare il peso.	23 For the dread of God will be upon me, and his majesty will overpower me.
24 Se ho riposta nell'oro la mia forza, se dissi all'oro fino: Tu sei la mia speranza;	24 Had I put my trust in gold or called fine gold my security;
25 se mi son rallegrato per le mie molte ricchezze, e perchè la mia mano ha accumulati molti beni;	25 Or had I rejoiced that my wealth was great, or that my hand had acquired abundance--
26 se guardai il sole nel suo splendore e la luna che si avanzava nella sua chiarezza,	26 Had I looked upon the sun as it shone, or the moon in the splendor of its progress,
27 e il mio cuore si rallegrò segretamente e io baciai la mia mano colla mia bocca,	27 And had my heart been secretly enticed to waft them a kiss with my hand;
28 (il che è una grandissima iniquità e negazione dell'Altissimo Dio),	28 This too would be a crime for condemnation, for I should have denied God above.
29 se mi rallegrai della rovina di chi ini odiava ed esultai quando lo raggiunse la sventura,	29 Had I rejoiced at the destruction of my enemy or exulted when evil fell upon him,
30 (io non permisi alla mia bocca di peccare, col mandare imprecazioni contro la vita di lui);	30 Even though I had not suffered my mouth to sin by uttering a curse against his life--
31 se gli uomini della mia tenda non dissero: Chi ci darà delle sue carni affinchè ci saziamo?	31 Had not the men of my tent exclaimed, "Who has not been fed with his meat!"
32 (il pellegrino non stette allo scoperto, la mia porta fu aperta al viaggiatore);	32 Because no stranger lodged in the street, but I opened my door to wayfarers--
33 se, come fa l'uomo, nascosi il mio peccato e celai nel mio seno la mia iniquità;	33 Had I, out of human weakness, hidden my sins and buried my guilt in my bosom
34 se ebbi paura della gran moltitudine e mi spaventò il disprezzo dei miei vicini, e non sono stato piuttosto in silenzio, senza passare la porta.	34 Because I feared the noisy multitude and the scorn of the tribes terrified me- then I should have remained silent, and not come out of doors!
35 Chi mi darà uno che mi ascolti e che l'Onnipotente esaudisca il mio desiderio e colui che giudica scriva egli stesso il libello?	35 Oh, that I had one to hear my case, and that my accuser would write out his indictment!
36 Affinchè io lo porti sulle mie spalle e me lo avvolga alla testa qual diadema?	36 Surely, I should wear it on my shoulder or put it on me like a diadem;
37 Ad ogni mio passo ne ripeterei le parole, e glielo presenterei come ad un principe.	37 Of all my steps I should give him an account; like a prince I should present myself before him. This is my final plea; let the Almighty answer me! The words of Job are ended.
38 Se la mia terra grida contro di me e se con lei piangono i suoi solchi,	38 If my land has cried out against me till its very furrows complained;
39 se ho mangiato i suoi frutti senza pagare ed ho afflitto l'anima dei suoi agricoltori,	39 If I have eaten its produce without payment and grieved the hearts of its tenants;
40 invece di grano mi nascano triboli, invece dell'orzo spine ». (Sono finite le parole di Giobbe).	40 Then let the thistles grow instead of wheat and noxious weeds instead of barley!
