1 L’humain, né de la femme, sa vie est courte, et jamais sans problèmes.	1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
2 Comme la fleur il sort et puis se fane, comme l’ombre il court et jamais ne s’arrête.	2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
3 Et c’est sur lui que tu as l’œil ouvert, c’est lui que tu fais comparaître devant toi?	3 And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
4 Qui fera sortir le pur de l’impur? Personne!	4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
5 Puisque ses jours lui sont comptés, que de toi dépend le nombre de ses mois, et qu’il ne peut passer le terme fixé par toi,	5 Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
6 alors: regarde ailleurs et laisse-le, comme un ouvrier, finir sa journée.	6 Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.
7 Pour l’arbre il y a un espoir: on l’a coupé, il reprendra vie, il ne cessera de pousser des rejets.	7 For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
8 Sa racine peut vieillir en terre et son tronc mourir dans le sol,	8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
9 rien qu’à l’odeur de l’eau il bourgeonne et comme un jeune plant il refait un feuillage.	9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
10 Mais l’homme aussitôt mort se défait: quand il a expiré, où voudrait-on qu’il soit?	10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?
11 La mer pourrait perdre ses eaux, les fleuves se vider et rester secs,	11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:
12 celui qui gît ne se relèvera pas! Pas de réveil pour lui tant que durent les cieux, les humains ne sortiront pas de leur sommeil.	12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
13 14:14 S’il était possible qu’un mort revive,	13 O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!
14 14:13 je voudrais que tu me gardes dans le monde d’en bas, que tu m’y caches, le temps que passe ta colère, et que tu fixes un jour pour te souvenir de moi. 14b Là-bas, tant que durerait mon service, j’attendrais l’heure de la relève,	14 If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
15 Alors tu appellerais et je te répondrais, tu viendrais réclamer l’œuvre de tes mains.	15 Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.
16 Fini le temps où tu comptais tous mes pas: tu ne regarderais plus mes péchés,	16 For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?
17 tu bouclerais ma faute dans un sac et blanchirais mes dettes.	17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.
18 Mais non! La montagne s’éboule, le rocher cède,	18 And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.
19 les eaux creusent les pierres, l’averse emporte les terres; et l’espoir de l’homme, tu l’enlèves!	19 The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.
20 Tu le terrasses: c’est fini, il s’en est allé; tu le défigures et tu l’envoies au diable.	20 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
21 Si ses fils sont honorés, il ne le sait pas, s’ils sont méprisés, il n’en a nulle idée:	21 His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.
22 il n’a de chagrin que pour son propre corps, il n’a plus d’autre deuil que le sien.	22 But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
