1 ויהי כאשר נבנתה החומה ואעמיד הדלתות ויפקדו השוערים והמשררים והלוים	1 Now, when the wal had been rebuilt and I had hung the doors, the gatekeepers (the singers and theLevites) were then appointed.
2 ואצוה את חנני אחי ואת חנניה שר הבירה על ירושלם כי הוא כאיש אמת וירא את האלהים מרבים	2 I entrusted the administration of Jerusalem to my brother Hanani, and to Hananiah the commander ofthe citadel, for he was a more trustworthy, God-fearing man than many others.
3 ויאמר להם לא יפתחו שערי ירושלם עד חם השמש ועד הם עמדים יגיפו הדלתות ואחזו והעמיד משמרות ישבי ירושלם איש במשמרו ואיש נגד ביתו	3 I said to them, 'The gates of Jerusalem must not be opened until the sun gets hot; and the doors mustbe shut and barred before it begins to go down. Detail guards from the residents of Jerusalem, each to his post,in front of his own house.'
4 והעיר רחבת ידים וגדולה והעם מעט בתוכה ואין בתים בנוים	4 The city was large and spacious but the population was smal , and the houses had not been rebuilt.
5 ויתן אלהי אל לבי ואקבצה את החרים ואת הסגנים ואת העם להתיחש ואמצא ספר היחש העולים בראשונה ואמצא כתוב בו	5 My God then inspired me to assemble the nobles, the officials and the people for the purpose of takinga census by families. I discovered the genealogical register of those who had returned in the first group, andthere I found entered:
6 אלה בני המדינה העלים משבי הגולה אשר הגלה נבוכדנצר מלך בבל וישובו לירושלם וליהודה איש לעירו	6 These are the people of the province who returned from the captivity of the Exile, those whomNebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had deported, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his owntown.
7 הבאים עם זרבבל ישוע נחמיה עזריה רעמיה נחמני מרדכי בלשן מספרת בגוי נחום בענה מספר אנשי עם ישראל	7 They were the ones who arrived with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani,Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:
8 בני פרעש אלפים מאה ושבעים ושנים	8 sons of Parosh, two thousand one hundred and seventy-two;
9 בני שפטיה שלש מאות שבעים ושנים	9 sons of Shephatiah, three hundred and seventy-two;
10 בני ארח שש מאות חמשים ושנים	10 sons of Arah, six hundred and fifty-two;
11 בני פחת מואב לבני ישוע ויואב אלפים ושמנה מאות שמנה עשר	11 sons of Pahath-Moab, that is to say sons of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand eight hundred andeighteen;
12 בני עילם אלף מאתים חמשים וארבעה	12 sons of Elam, one thousand two hundred and fifty-four;
13 בני זתוא שמנה מאות ארבעים וחמשה	13 sons of Zattu, eight hundred and forty-five;
14 בני זכי שבע מאות וששים	14 sons of Zaccai, seven hundred and sixty;
15 בני בנוי שש מאות ארבעים ושמנה	15 sons of Binnui, six hundred and forty-eight;
16 בני בבי שש מאות עשרים ושמנה	16 sons of Bebai, six hundred and twenty-eight;
17 בני עזגד אלפים שלש מאות עשרים ושנים	17 sons of Azgad, two thousand three hundred and twenty-two;
18 בני אדניקם שש מאות ששים ושבעה	18 sons of Adonikam, six hundred and sixty-seven;
19 בני בגוי אלפים ששים ושבעה	19 sons of Bigvai, two thousand and sixty-seven;
20 בני עדין שש מאות חמשים וחמשה	20 sons of Adin, six hundred and fifty-five;
21 בני אטר לחזקיה תשעים ושמנה	21 sons of Ater, that is to say of Hezekiah, ninety-eight;
22 בני חשם שלש מאות עשרים ושמנה	22 sons of Hashum, three hundred and twenty-eight;
23 בני בצי שלש מאות עשרים וארבעה	23 sons of Bezai, three hundred and twenty-four;
24 בני חריף מאה שנים עשר	24 sons of Hariph, one hundred and twelve;
25 בני גבעון תשעים וחמשה	25 sons of Gibeon, ninety-five;
26 אנשי בית לחם ונטפה מאה שמנים ושמנה	26 men of Bethlehem and Netophah, one hundred and eighty-eight;
27 אנשי ענתות מאה עשרים ושמנה	27 men of Anathoth, one hundred and twenty-eight;
28 אנשי בית עזמות ארבעים ושנים	28 men of Beth-Azmaveth, forty-two;
29 אנשי קרית יערים כפירה ובארות שבע מאות ארבעים ושלשה	29 men of Kiriath-Jearim, Chephirah and Beeroth, seven hundred and forty-three;
30 אנשי הרמה וגבע שש מאות עשרים ואחד	30 men of Ramah and Geba, six hundred and twenty-one;
31 אנשי מכמס מאה ועשרים ושנים	31 men of Michmas, one hundred and twenty-two;
32 אנשי בית אל והעי מאה עשרים ושלשה	32 men of Bethel and Ai, one hundred and twenty-three;
33 אנשי נבו אחר חמשים ושנים	33 men of the other Nebo, fifty-two;
34 בני עילם אחר אלף מאתים חמשים וארבעה	34 sons of the other Elam, one thousand two hundred and fifty-four;
35 בני חרם שלש מאות ועשרים	35 sons of Harim, three hundred and twenty;
36 בני ירחו שלש מאות ארבעים וחמשה	36 sons of Jericho, three hundred and forty-five;
37 בני לד חדיד ואונו שבע מאות ועשרים ואחד	37 sons of Lod, Hadid and Ono, seven hundred and twenty-one;
38 בני סנאה שלשת אלפים תשע מאות ושלשים	38 sons of Senaah, three thousand nine hundred and thirty.
39 הכהנים בני ידעיה לבית ישוע תשע מאות שבעים ושלשה	39 The priests: sons of Jedaiah, of the House of Jeshua, nine hundred and seventy-three;
40 בני אמר אלף חמשים ושנים	40 sons of Immer, one thousand and fifty-two;
41 בני פשחור אלף מאתים ארבעים ושבעה	41 sons of Pashhur, one thousand two hundred and forty-seven;
42 בני חרם אלף שבעה עשר	42 sons of Harim, one thousand and seventeen.
43 הלוים בני ישוע לקדמיאל לבני להודוה שבעים וארבעה	43 The Levites: sons of Jeshua, of Kadmiel, of the sons of Hodiah, seventy-four.
44 המשררים בני אסף מאה ארבעים ושמנה	44 The singers: sons of Asaph, one hundred and forty-eight.
45 השערים בני שלום בני אטר בני טלמן בני עקוב בני חטיטא בני שבי מאה שלשים ושמנה	45 The gatekeepers: sons of Shal um, sons of Ater, sons of Talmon, sons of Akkub, sons of Hatita, sonsof Shobai, one hundred and thirty-eight.
46 הנתינים בני צחא בני חשפא בני טבעות	46 The temple slaves: sons of Ziha, sons of Hasupha, sons of Tabbaoth,
47 בני קירס בני סיעא בני פדון	47 sons of Keros, sons of Sia, sons of Padon,
48 בני לבנה בני חגבה בני שלמי	48 sons of Lebana, sons of Hagaba, sons of Shalmai,
49 בני חנן בני גדל בני גחר	49 sons of Hanan, sons of Giddel, sons of Gahar,
50 בני ראיה בני רצין בני נקודא	50 sons of Reaiah, sons of Rezin, sons of Nekoda,
51 בני גזם בני עזא בני פסח	51 sons of Gazzam, sons of Uzza, sons of Paseah,
52 בני בסי בני מעונים בני נפושסים	52 sons of Besai, sons of the Meunites, sons of the Nephusites,
53 בני בקבוק בני חקופא בני חרחור	53 sons of Bakbuk, sons of Hakupha, sons of Harhur,
54 בני בצלית בני מחידא בני חרשא	54 sons of Bazlith, sons of Mehida, sons of Harsha,
55 בני ברקוס בני סיסרא בני תמח	55 sons of Barkos, sons of Sisera, sons of Temah,
56 בני נציח בני חטיפא	56 sons of Nezaiah, sons of Hatipha.
57 בני עבדי שלמה בני סוטי בני סופרת בני פרידא	57 The sons of Solomon's slaves: sons of Sotai, sons of Sophereth, sons of Perida,
58 בני יעלא בני דרקון בני גדל	58 sons of Jaala, sons of Darkon, sons of Giddel,
59 בני שפטיה בני חטיל בני פכרת הצביים בני אמון	59 sons of Shephatiah, sons of Hattil, sons of Pochereth-ha-Zebaim, sons of Amon.
60 כל הנתינים ובני עבדי שלמה שלש מאות תשעים ושנים	60 The total of the temple slaves and the sons of Solomon's slaves: three hundred and ninety-two.
61 ואלה העולים מתל מלח תל חרשא כרוב אדון ואמר ולא יכלו להגיד בית אבותם וזרעם אם מישראל הם	61 The fol owing, who came from Tel-Melah, Tel-Harsha, Cherub, Addon and Immer, could not prove thattheir families and ancestry were of Israelite origin:
62 בני דליה בני טוביה בני נקודא שש מאות וארבעים ושנים	62 the sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, the sons of Nekoda: six hundred and forty-two.
63 ומן הכהנים בני חביה בני הקוץ בני ברזלי אשר לקח מבנות ברזלי הגלעדי אשה ויקרא על שמם	63 And among the priests: the sons of Hobaiah, the sons of Hakkoz, the sons of Barzil ai -- who hadmarried one of the daughters of Barzil ai the Gileadite, whose name he adopted.
64 אלה בקשו כתבם המתיחשים ולא נמצא ויגאלו מן הכהנה	64 These had looked for their entries in the official genealogies but were not to be found there, and werehence disqualified from the priesthood.
65 ויאמר התרשתא להם אשר לא יאכלו מקדש הקדשים עד עמד הכהן לאורים ותומים	65 Consequently, His Excel ency forbade them to eat any of the consecrated food until a priest appearedwho could consult urim and thummim.
66 כל הקהל כאחד ארבע רבוא אלפים שלש מאות וששים	66 The whole assembly numbered forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty people,
67 מלבד עבדיהם ואמהתיהם אלה שבעת אלפים שלש מאות שלשים ושבעה ולהם משררים ומשררות מאתים וארבעים וחמשה	67 not counting their slaves and maidservants to the number of seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven. They also had two hundred and forty-five male and female singers.
68 סוסיהם שבע מאות שלשים וששה פרדיהם מאתים ארבעים וחמשה	68 They had four hundred and thirty-five camels and six thousand seven hundred and twenty donkeys.
69 גמלים ארבע מאות שלשים וחמשה חמרים ששת אלפים שבע מאות ועשרים	69 A certain number of heads of families contributed to the work. His Excel ency contributed onethousand gold drachmas, fifty bowls, and thirty priestly robes to the fund.
70 ומקצת ראשי האבות נתנו למלאכה התרשתא נתן לאוצר זהב דרכמנים אלף מזרקות חמשים כתנות כהנים שלשים וחמש מאות	70 And heads of families gave twenty thousand gold drachmas and two thousand two hundred silverminas to the work fund.
71 ומראשי האבות נתנו לאוצר המלאכה זהב דרכמונים שתי רבות וכסף מנים אלפים ומאתים	71 The gifts made by the rest of the people amounted to twenty thousand gold drachmas, two thousandsilver minas, and sixty-seven priestly robes.
72 ואשר נתנו שארית העם זהב דרכמונים שתי רבוא וכסף מנים אלפים וכתנת כהנים ששים ושבעה	72 The priests, the Levites and some of the people lived in Jerusalem and thereabouts; the singers, thegatekeepers, and the temple slaves in their appropriate towns; and al the other Israelites, in their own towns.Now when the seventh month came round -- the Israelites being in their towns-
73 וישבו הכהנים והלוים והשוערים והמשררים ומן העם והנתינים וכל ישראל בעריהם ויגע החדש השביעי ובני ישראל בעריהם
