1 Non essere aspro nel riprendere un anziano, ma esortalo come fosse tuo padre; i più giovani come fratelli;	1 You should not rebuke an old man, but rather plead with him, as if he were your father; with young men, like brothers;
2 le donne anziane come madri e le più giovani come sorelle, in tutta purezza.	2 with old women, like mothers; with young women, in all chastity, like sisters.
3 Onora le vedove, quelle che sono veramente vedove;	3 Honor those widows who are true widows.
4 ma se una vedova ha figli o nipoti, questi imparino prima a praticare la pietà verso quelli della propria famiglia e a rendere il contraccambio ai loro genitori, poiché è gradito a Dio.	4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let her first learn to manage her own household, and to fulfill, in turn, her own obligation to her parents; for this is acceptable before God.
5 Quella poi veramente vedova e che sia rimasta sola, ha riposto la speranza in Dio e si consacra all'orazione e alla preghiera giorno e notte;	5 But she who is truly a widow and is destitute, let her hope in God, and let her be urgent in supplications and prayers, night and day.
6 al contrario quella che si dà ai piaceri, anche se vive, è già morta.	6 For she who is living in pleasures is dead, while living.
7 Proprio questo raccomanda, perché siano irreprensibili.	7 And give instruction in this, so that they may be beyond reproach.
8 Se poi qualcuno non si prende cura dei suoi cari, soprattutto di quelli della sua famiglia, costui ha rinnegato la fede ed è peggiore di un infedele.	8 But if anyone has no concern for his own, and especially for those of his own household, he has denied the faith, and he is worse than an unbeliever.
9 Una vedova sia iscritta nel catalogo delle vedove quando abbia non meno di sessant'anni, sia andata sposa una sola volta,	9 Let a widow be chosen who is no less than sixty years of age, who was the wife of one husband,
10 abbia la testimonianza di opere buone: abbia cioè allevato figli, praticato l'ospitalità, lavato i piedi ai santi, sia venuta in soccorso agli afflitti, abbia esercitato ogni opera di bene.	10 who has testimony of her good works: whether she has educated children, or has provided hospitality, or has washed the feet of the saints, or has ministered to those suffering tribulation, or has pursued any kind of good work.
11 Le vedove più giovani non accettarle perché, non appena vengono prese da desideri indegni di Cristo, vogliono sposarsi di nuovo	11 But avoid the younger widows. For once they have flourished in Christ, they will want to marry,
12 e si attirano così un giudizio di condanna per aver trascurato la loro prima fede.	12 resulting in damnation, because they have disregarded the primacy of faith.
13 Inoltre, trovandosi senza far niente, imparano a girare qua e là per le case e sono non soltanto oziose, ma pettegole e curiose, parlando di ciò che non conviene.	13 And being at the same time also idle, they learn to go from house to house, being not only idle, but also talkative and curious, speaking of things which do not concern them.
14 Desidero quindi che le più giovani si risposino, abbiano figli, governino la loro casa, per non dare all'avversario nessun motivo di biasimo.	14 Therefore, I want the younger women to marry, to procreate children, to be mothers of families, to provide no ready opportunity for the adversary to speak evil.
15 Già alcune purtroppo si sono sviate dietro a satana.	15 For certain ones have already been turned back to Satan.
16 Se qualche donna credente ha con sé delle vedove, provveda lei a loro e non ricada il peso sulla Chiesa, perché questa possa così venire incontro a quelle che sono veramente vedove.	16 If any among the faithful have widows, let him minister to them and not burden the Church, so that there may be enough for those who are true widows.
17 I presbiteri che esercitano bene la presidenza siano trattati con doppio onore, soprattutto quelli che si affaticano nella predicazione e nell'insegnamento.	17 Let priests who lead well be held worthy of twice the honor, especially those who labor in the Word and in doctrine.
18 Dice infatti la Scrittura: 'Non metterai la museruola al bue che trebbia' e: 'Il lavoratore ha diritto al suo salario'.	18 For Scripture says: “You shall not muzzle an ox as it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his pay.”
19 Non accettare accuse contro un presbitero senza la deposizione di 'due o tre testimoni'.	19 Do not be willing to accept an accusation against a priest, except under two or three witnesses.
20 Quelli poi che risultino colpevoli riprendili alla presenza di tutti, perché anche gli altri ne abbiano timore.	20 Reprove sinners in the sight of everyone, so that the others may have fear.
21 Ti scongiuro davanti a Dio, a Cristo Gesù e agli angeli eletti, di osservare queste norme con imparzialità e di non far mai nulla per favoritismo.	21 I testify before God and Christ Jesus and the elect Angels, that you should observe these things without prejudgment, doing nothing which shows favoritism to either side.
22 Non aver fretta di imporre le mani ad alcuno, per non farti complice dei peccati altrui. Conservati puro!	22 You should not be quick to impose hands on anyone, nor should you take part in the sins of outsiders. Keep yourself chaste.
23 Smetti di bere soltanto acqua, ma fa' uso di un po' di vino a causa dello stomaco e delle tue frequenti indisposizioni.	23 Do not continue to drink only water, but make use of a little wine, for the sake of your stomach and your frequent infirmities.
24 Di alcuni uomini i peccati si manifestano prima del giudizio e di altri dopo;	24 The sins of some men have been made manifest, preceding them to judgment, but those of others are manifested later.
25 così anche le opere buone vengono alla luce e quelle stesse che non sono tali non possono rimanere nascoste.	25 Similarly, too, good deeds have been made manifest, but even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden.
