Prima lettera a Timoteo 5

1 Non essere aspro nel riprendere un anziano, ma esortalo come fosse tuo padre; i più giovani come fratelli;	1 Never speak sharply to a man older than yourself, but appeal to him as you would to your own father;treat younger men as brothers,
2 le donne anziane come madri e le più giovani come sorelle, in tutta purezza.	2 older women as mothers and young women as sisters with al propriety.
3 Onora le vedove, quelle che sono veramente vedove;	3 Be considerate to widows -- if they real y are widowed.
4 ma se una vedova ha figli o nipoti, questi imparino prima a praticare la pietà verso quelli della propria famiglia e a rendere il contraccambio ai loro genitori, poiché è gradito a Dio.	4 If a widow has children or grandchildren, they are to learn first of al to do their duty to their own familiesand repay their debt to their parents, because this is what pleases God.
5 Quella poi veramente vedova e che sia rimasta sola, ha riposto la speranza in Dio e si consacra all'orazione e alla preghiera giorno e notte;	5 But a woman who is real y widowed and left on her own has set her hope on God and perseveres nightand day in petitions and prayer.
6 al contrario quella che si dà ai piaceri, anche se vive, è già morta.	6 The one who thinks only of pleasure is already dead while she is stil alive:
7 Proprio questo raccomanda, perché siano irreprensibili.	7 instruct them in this, too, so that their lives may be blameless.
8 Se poi qualcuno non si prende cura dei suoi cari, soprattutto di quelli della sua famiglia, costui ha rinnegato la fede ed è peggiore di un infedele.	8 Anyone who does not look after his own relations, especial y if they are living with him, has rejected thefaith and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 Una vedova sia iscritta nel catalogo delle vedove quando abbia non meno di sessant'anni, sia andata sposa una sola volta,	9 Enrolment as a widow is permissible only for a woman at least sixty years old who has had only onehusband.
10 abbia la testimonianza di opere buone: abbia cioè allevato figli, praticato l'ospitalità, lavato i piedi ai santi, sia venuta in soccorso agli afflitti, abbia esercitato ogni opera di bene.	10 She must be a woman known for her good works -- whether she has brought up her children, beenhospitable to strangers and washed the feet of God's holy people, helped people in hardship or been active in allkinds of good work.
11 Le vedove più giovani non accettarle perché, non appena vengono prese da desideri indegni di Cristo, vogliono sposarsi di nuovo	11 Do not accept young widows because if their natural desires distract them from Christ, they want tomarry again,
12 e si attirano così un giudizio di condanna per aver trascurato la loro prima fede.	12 and then people condemn them for being unfaithful to their original promise.
13 Inoltre, trovandosi senza far niente, imparano a girare qua e là per le case e sono non soltanto oziose, ma pettegole e curiose, parlando di ciò che non conviene.	13 Besides, they learn how to be idle and go round from house to house; and then, not merely idle, theylearn to be gossips and meddlers in other people's affairs and to say what should remain unsaid.
14 Desidero quindi che le più giovani si risposino, abbiano figli, governino la loro casa, per non dare all'avversario nessun motivo di biasimo.	14 I think it is best for young widows to marry again and have children and a household to look after, andnot give the enemy any chance to raise a scandal about them;
15 Già alcune purtroppo si sono sviate dietro a satana.	15 there are already some who have turned aside to fol ow Satan.
16 Se qualche donna credente ha con sé delle vedove, provveda lei a loro e non ricada il peso sulla Chiesa, perché questa possa così venire incontro a quelle che sono veramente vedove.	16 If a woman believer has widowed relatives, she should support them and not make the Church bear theexpense but enable it to support those who are real y widowed.
17 I presbiteri che esercitano bene la presidenza siano trattati con doppio onore, soprattutto quelli che si affaticano nella predicazione e nell'insegnamento.	17 Elders who do their work wel while they are in charge earn double reward, especial y those who workhard at preaching and teaching.
18 Dice infatti la Scrittura: 'Non metterai la museruola al bue che trebbia' e: 'Il lavoratore ha diritto al suo salario'.	18 As scripture says: You must not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the corn; and again: The workerdeserves his wages.
19 Non accettare accuse contro un presbitero senza la deposizione di 'due o tre testimoni'.	19 Never accept any accusation brought against an elder unless it is supported by two or three witnesses.
20 Quelli poi che risultino colpevoli riprendili alla presenza di tutti, perché anche gli altri ne abbiano timore.	20 If anyone is at fault, reprimand him publicly, as a warning to the rest.
21 Ti scongiuro davanti a Dio, a Cristo Gesù e agli angeli eletti, di osservare queste norme con imparzialità e di non far mai nulla per favoritismo.	21 Before God, and before Jesus Christ and the angels he has chosen, I charge you to keep these rulesimpartial y and never to be influenced by favouritism.
22 Non aver fretta di imporre le mani ad alcuno, per non farti complice dei peccati altrui. Conservati puro!	22 Do not be too quick to lay hands on anyone, and never make yourself an accomplice in anybody else'ssin; keep yourself pure.
23 Smetti di bere soltanto acqua, ma fa' uso di un po' di vino a causa dello stomaco e delle tue frequenti indisposizioni.	23 You should give up drinking only water and have a little wine for the sake of your digestion and thefrequent bouts of illness that you have.
24 Di alcuni uomini i peccati si manifestano prima del giudizio e di altri dopo;	24 The faults of some people are obvious long before they come to the reckoning, while others have faultsthat are not discovered until later.
25 così anche le opere buone vengono alla luce e quelle stesse che non sono tali non possono rimanere nascoste.	25 Similarly, the good that people do can be obvious; but even when it is not, it cannot remain hidden.
