1 Per i peccati da voi commessi di fronte a Dio sarete condotti prigionieri in Babilonia da Nabucodònosor re dei Babilonesi.	1 A copy of the letter which Jeremiah sent to those who were being led captive to Babylon by the king of the Babylonians, to convey to them what God had commanded him:
2 Giunti dunque in Babilonia, vi resterete molti anni e per lungo tempo fino a sette generazioni; dopo vi ricondurrò di là in pace.	2 When you reach Babylon you will be there many years, a period seven generations long; after which I will bring you back from there in peace.
3 Ora, vedrete in Babilonia idoli d'argento, d'oro e di legno, portati a spalla, i quali infondono timore ai pagani.	3 And now in Babylon you will see borne upon men's shoulders gods of silver and gold and wood, which cast fear upon the pagans.
4 State attenti dunque a non imitare gli stranieri; il timore dei loro dèi non si impadronisca di voi.	4 Take care that you yourselves do not imitate their alien example and stand in fear of them,
5 Alla vista di una moltitudine che prostrandosi davanti e dietro a loro li adora, pensate: "Te dobbiamo adorare, Signore".	5 when you see the crowd before them and behind worshiping them. Rather, say in your hearts, "You, O LORD, are to be worshiped!";
6 Poiché il mio angelo è con voi, egli si prenderà cura di voi.	6 for my angel is with you, and he is the custodian of your lives.
7 Essi hanno una lingua limata da un artefice, sono indorati e inargentati, ma sono simulacri falsi e non possono parlare.	7 Their tongues are smoothed by woodworkers; they are covered with gold and silver-but they are a fraud, and cannot speak.
8 Come si fa con una ragazza vanitosa, prendono oro e acconciano corone sulla testa dei loro dèi.	8 People bring gold, as to a maiden in love with ornament,
9 Talvolta anche i sacerdoti, togliendo ai loro dèi oro e argento, lo spendono per sé, dandone anche alle prostitute nei postriboli.	9 and furnish crowns for the heads of their gods. Then sometimes the priests take the silver and gold from their gods and spend it on themselves,
10 Adornano poi con vesti, come si fa con gli uomini, questi idoli d'argento, d'oro e di legno; ma essi non sono in grado di salvarsi dalla ruggine e dai tarli.	10 or give part of it to the harlots on the terrace. They trick them out in garments like men, these gods of silver and gold and wood;
11 Sono avvolti in una veste purpurea, ma bisogna pulire il loro volto per la polvere del tempio che si posa abbondante su di essi.	11 but though they are wrapped in purple clothing, they are not safe from corrosion or insects.
12 Come un governatore di una regione, il dio ha lo scettro, ma non stermina colui che lo offende.	12 They wipe their faces clean of the house dust which is thick upon them.
13 Ha il pugnale e la scure nella destra, ma non si libera dalla guerra e dai ladri.	13 Each has a scepter, like the human ruler of a district; but none does away with those that offend against it.
14 Per questo è evidente che non sono dèi; non temeteli, dunque!	14 Each has in its right hand an axe or dagger, but it cannot save itself from war or pillage. Thus it is known they are not gods; do not fear them.
15 Come un vaso di terra una volta rotto diventa inutile, così sono i loro dèi, posti nei templi.	15 As useless as one's broken tools
16 I loro occhi sono pieni della polvere sollevata dai piedi di coloro che entrano.	16 are their gods, set up in their houses; their eyes are full of dust from the feet of those who enter.
17 Come ad uno che abbia offeso un re si tiene bene sbarrato il luogo dove è detenuto perché deve essere condotto a morte, così i sacerdoti assicurano i templi con portoni, con serrature e con spranghe, perché non vengano saccheggiati dai ladri.	17 Their courtyards are walled in like those of a man brought to execution for a crime against the king; the priests reinforce their houses with gates and bars and bolts, lest they be carried off by robbers.
18 Accendono loro lumi, persino più numerosi che per se stessi, ma gli dèi non ne vedono alcuno.	18 They light more lamps for them than for themselves, yet not one of these can they see.
19 Sono come una delle travi del tempio; il loro interno, come si dice, viene divorato e anch'essi senza accorgersene sono divorati dagli insetti che strisciano dalla terra, insieme con le loro vesti.	19 They are like any beam in the house; it is said their hearts are eaten away. Though the insects out of the ground consume them and their garments, they do not feel it.
20 Il loro volto si annerisce per il fumo del tempio.	20 Their faces are blackened by the smoke of the house.
21 Sul loro corpo e sulla testa si posano pipistrelli, rondini e altri uccelli e anche i gatti.	21 Bats and swallows alight on their bodies and on their heads; and cats as well as birds.
22 Di qui potete conoscere che non sono dèi; non temeteli, dunque!	22 Know, therefore, that they are not gods, and do not fear them.
23 L'oro di cui sono adorni per bellezza non risplende se qualcuno non ne toglie la patina; perfino quando venivano fusi, essi non se ne accorgevano.	23 Despite the gold that covers them for adornment, unless someone wipes away the corrosion, they do not shine; nor did they feel anything when they were molded.
24 Furono comprati a qualsiasi prezzo, essi che non hanno alito vitale.	24 They are bought at any price, and there is no spirit in them.
25 Senza piedi, vengono portati a spalla, mostrando agli uomini la loro condizione vergognosa; arrossiscono anche i loro fedeli perché, se cadono a terra, non si rialzano più.	25 Having no feet, they are carried on men's shoulders, displaying their shame to all; and those who worship them are put to confusion
26 Neanche se uno li colloca diritti si muoveranno da sé, né se si sono inclinati si raddrizzeranno; si pongono offerte innanzi a loro come ai morti.	26 because, if they fall to the ground, the worshipers must raise them up. They neither move of themselves if one sets them upright, nor come upright if they fall; but one puts gifts beside them as beside the dead.
27 I loro sacerdoti vendono le loro vittime e ne traggono profitto; anche le mogli di costoro ne pongono sotto sale una parte e non ne danno né ai poveri né ai bisognosi; anche una donna in stato di impurità e la puerpera toccano le loro vittime.	27 Their priests resell their sacrifices for their own advantage. Even their wives cure parts of the meat, but do not share it with the poor and the weak;
28 Conoscendo dunque da questo che non sono dèi, non temeteli!	28 the menstruous and women in childbed handle their sacrifices. Knowing from this that they are not gods, do not fear them.
29 Come infatti si potrebbero chiamare dèi? Perfino le donne presentano offerte a questi idoli d'argento, d'oro e di legno.	29 How can they be called gods? For women bring the offerings to these gods of silver and gold and wood;
30 Nei templi i sacerdoti siedono con le vesti stracciate, la testa e le guance rasate, a capo scoperto.	30 and in their temples the priests squat with torn tunic and with shaven hair and beard, and with their heads uncovered.
31 Urlano alzando grida davanti ai loro dèi, come fanno alcuni durante un banchetto funebre.	31 They shout and wail before their gods as others do at a funeral banquet.
32 I sacerdoti si portan via le vesti degli dèi e ne rivestono le loro mogli e i loro bambini.	32 The priests take some of their clothing and put it on their wives and children.
33 Gli idoli non possono contraccambiare né il male né il bene ricevuto da qualcuno; non possono né costituire né spodestare un re;	33 Whether they are treated well or ill by anyone, they cannot requite it; they can neither set up a king nor remove him.
34 nemmeno possono dare ricchezze né soldi. Se qualcuno, fatto un voto, non lo mantiene, non se ne curano.	34 Similarly, they cannot give anyone riches or coppers; if one fails to fulfill a vow to them, they cannot exact it of him.
35 Non liberano un uomo dalla morte né sottraggono il debole da un forte.	35 They neither save a man from death, nor deliver the weak from the strong.
36 Non rendono la vista a un cieco né liberano un uomo dalle angosce.	36 To no blind man do they restore his sight, nor do they save any man in an emergency.
37 Non hanno pietà della vedova né beneficano l'orfano.	37 They neither pity the widow nor benefit the orphan.
38 Sono simili alle pietre estratte dalla montagna quegli idoli di legno, indorati e argentati. I loro fedeli saranno confusi.	38 These gilded and silvered wooden statues are like stones from the mountains; and their worshipers will be put to shame.
39 Come dunque si può ritenere e dichiarare che costoro sono dèi?	39 How then can it be thought or claimed that they are gods?
40 Inoltre, perfino gli stessi Caldei li disonorano; questi infatti quando trovano un muto incapace di parlare lo presentano a Bel pregandolo di farlo parlare, quasi che costui potesse sentire.	40 Even the Chaldeans themselves have no respect for them; for when they see a deaf mute, incapable of speech, they bring forward Bel and ask the god to make noise, as though the man could understand;
41 Costoro, pur rendendosene conto, non sono capaci di abbandonare gli idoli, perché non hanno senno.	41 and they are themselves unable to reflect and abandon these gods, for they have no sense.
42 Le donne siedono per la strada cinte di cordicelle e bruciano della crusca.	42 And their women, girt with cords, sit by the roads, burning chaff for incense;
43 Quando qualcuna di esse, tratta in disparte da qualche passante, si è data a costui, schernisce la sua vicina perché non fu stimata come lei e perché la sua cordicella non fu spezzata.	43 and whenever one of them is drawn aside by some passer-by who lies with her, she mocks her neighbor who has not been dignified as she has, and has not had her cord broken.
44 Quanto avviene attorno agli idoli è menzogna; dunque, come si può credere e dichiarare che costoro sono dèi?	44 All that takes place around these gods is a fraud: how then can it be thought or claimed that they are gods?
45 Gli idoli sono lavoro di artigiani e di orefici; essi non diventano niente altro che ciò che gli artigiani vogliono che siano.	45 They are produced by woodworkers and goldsmiths, and they are nothing else than what these craftsmen wish them to be.
46 Coloro che li fabbricano non hanno vita lunga; come potrebbero le cose da essi fabbricate essere dèi?	46 Even those who produce them are not long-lived;
47 Essi lasciano ai loro posteri menzogna e ignominia.	47 how then can what they have produced be gods? They have left frauds and opprobrium to their successors.
48 Difatti, quando sopraggiungono la guerra e le calamità, i sacerdoti si consigliano fra di loro sul come potranno nascondersi insieme con i loro dèi.	48 For when war or disaster comes upon them, the priests deliberate among themselves where they can hide with them.
49 Come dunque è possibile non comprendere che non sono dèi coloro che non possono salvare se stessi né dalla guerra né dai mali?	49 How then can one not know that these are no-gods, which do not save themselves either from war or from disaster?
50 Dopo tali fatti si riconoscerà che gli idoli di legno, indorati e argentati, sono una menzogna; a tutte le genti e ai re sarà evidente che essi non sono dèi, ma lavoro delle mani d'uomo e che sono privi di ogni qualità divina.	50 They are wooden, gilded and silvered; they will later be known for frauds. To all peoples and kings it will be clear that they are not gods, but human handiwork; and that God's work is not in them.
51 A chi dunque non sarà evidente che non sono dèi?	51 Who does not know that they are not gods?
52 Essi infatti non possono costituire un re sul paese né concedere la pioggia agli uomini;	52 They set no king over the land, nor do they give men rain.
53 non risolvono le contese, né liberano l'oppresso, poiché non hanno alcun potere; sono come cornacchie fra il cielo e la terra.	53 They neither vindicate their own rights, nor do they recover what is unjustly taken, for they are unable;
54 Infatti, se il fuoco si attacca al tempio di questi dèi di legno o indorati o argentati, mentre i loro sacerdoti fuggiranno e si metteranno in salvo, essi invece come travi bruceranno là in mezzo.	54 they are like crows between heaven and earth. For when fire breaks out in the temple of these wooden or gilded or silvered gods, though the priests flee and are safe, they themselves are burnt up in the fire like beams.
55 A un re e ai nemici non possono resistere.	55 They cannot resist a king, or enemy forces.
56 Come dunque si può ammettere e pensare che essi siano dèi?	56 How then can it be admitted or thought that they are gods? are safe from neither thieves nor bandits, these wooden and silvered and gilded gods;
57 Né dai ladri né dai briganti si salveranno questi idoli di legno, argentati e indorati, ai quali i ladri con la violenza tolgono l'oro, l'argento e la veste che li avvolge e poi fuggono tenendo la roba; essi non sono in grado di aiutare neppure se stessi.	57 those who seize them strip off the gold and the silver, and go away with the clothing that was on them, and they cannot help themselves.
58 Per questo vale meglio di questi dèi bugiardi un re che mostri coraggio oppure un arnese utile in casa, di cui si serve chi l'ha acquistato; anche meglio di questi dèi bugiardi è una porta, che tenga al sicuro quanto è dentro la casa o perfino una colonna di legno in un palazzo.	58 How much better to be a king displaying his valor, or a handy tool in a house, the joy of its owner, than these false gods; or the door of a house, that keeps safe those who are within, rather than these false gods; or a wooden post in a palace, rather than these false gods!
59 Il sole, la luna, le stelle, essendo lucenti e destinati a servire a uno scopo obbediscono volentieri.	59 The sun and moon and stars are bright, and obedient in the service for which they are sent.
60 Così anche il lampo, quando appare, è ben visibile; anche il vento spira su tutta la regione.	60 Likewise the lightning, when it flashes, is a goodly sight; and the same wind blows over all the land.
61 Quando alle nubi è ordinato da Dio di percorrere tutta la terra, eseguiscono l'ordine; il fuoco, inviato dall'alto per consumare monti e boschi, eseguisce il comando.	61 The clouds, too, when commanded by God to proceed across the whole world, fulfill the order;
62 Gli idoli invece non assomigliano né per l'aspetto né per la potenza a queste cose.	62 and fire, sent from on high to burn up the mountains and the forests, does what has been commanded. But these false gods are not their equal, whether in beauty or in power;
63 Perciò non si deve ritenere né dichiarare che siano dèi, poiché non possono né rendere giustizia né beneficare gli uomini.	63 so that it is unthinkable, and cannot be claimed, that they are gods. They can neither execute judgment, nor benefit man.
64 Conoscendo dunque che non sono dèi, non temeteli!	64 Know, therefore, that they are not gods, and do not fear them.
65 Essi non maledicono né benedicono i re;	65 Kings they neither curse nor bless.
66 non mostrano alle genti segni nel cielo, né risplendono come il sole, né illuminano come la luna.	66 They show the nations no signs in the heavens, nor are they brilliant like the sun, nor shining like the moon.
67 Le belve sono migliori di loro, perché possono fuggire in un riparo e provvedere a se stesse.	67 The beasts which can help themselves by fleeing to shelter are better than they are.
68 Dunque, in nessuna maniera è chiaro per noi che essi sono dèi; per questo non temeteli!	68 Thus in no way is it clear to us that they are gods; so do not fear them.
69 Come infatti uno spauracchio che in un cocomeraio nulla protegge, tali sono i loro idoli di legno indorati e argentati;	69 For like a scarecrow in a cucumber patch, that is no protection, are their wooden, gilded, silvered gods.
70 ancora, i loro idoli di legno indorati e argentati si possono paragonare a un ramo nell'orto, su cui si posa ogni sorta di uccelli, o anche a un cadavere gettato nelle tenebre.	70 Just like a thornbush in a garden on which perches every kind of bird, or like a corpse hurled into darkness, are their silvered and gilded wooden gods.
71 Dalla porpora e dal bisso che si logorano su di loro saprete che non sono dèi; infine saranno divorati e nel paese saranno una vergogna.	71 From the rotting of the purple and the linen upon them, it can be known that they are not gods; they themselves will in the end be comsumed, and be a disgrace in the land.
72 È migliore un uomo giusto che non abbia idoli, poiché sarà lontano dal disonore.	72 The better for the just man who has no idols: he shall be far from disgrace!
