1 Ricòrdati del tuo creatore nei giorni della tua giovinezza, prima che vengano i giorni tristi e giungano gli anni di cui dovrai dire: "Non ci provo alcun gusto",	1 Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come, and the years draw nigh, when you will say, "I have no pleasure in them";
2 prima che si oscuri il sole, la luce, la luna e le stelle e ritornino le nubi dopo la pioggia;	2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return after the rain;
3 quando tremeranno i custodi della casa e si curveranno i gagliardi e cesseranno di lavorare le donne che macinano, perché rimaste in poche, e si offuscheranno quelle che guardano dalle finestre	3 in the day when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men are bent, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look through the windows are dimmed,
4 e si chiuderanno le porte sulla strada; quando si abbasserà il rumore della mola e si attenuerà il cinguettio degli uccelli e si affievoliranno tutti i toni del canto;	4 and the doors on the street are shut; when the sound of the grinding is low, and one rises up at the voice of a bird, and all the daughters of song are brought low;
5 quando si avrà paura delle alture e degli spauracchi della strada; quando fiorirà il mandorlo e la locusta si trascinerà a stento e il cappero non avrà più effetto, poiché l'uomo se ne va nella dimora eterna e i piagnoni si aggirano per la strada;	5 they are afraid also of what is high, and terrors are in the way; the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper drags itself along and desire fails; because man goes to his eternal home, and the mourners go about the streets;
6 prima che si rompa il cordone d'argento e la lucerna d'oro s'infranga e si rompa l'anfora alla fonte e la carrucola cada nel pozzo	6 before the silver cord is snapped, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern,
7 e ritorni la polvere alla terra, com'era prima, e lo spirito torni a Dio che lo ha dato.	7 and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
8 Vanità delle vanità, dice Qoèlet, e tutto è vanità.	8 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher; all is vanity.
9 Oltre a essere saggio, Qoèlet insegnò anche la scienza al popolo; ascoltò, indagò e compose un gran numero di massime.	9 Besides being wise, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge, weighing and studying and arranging proverbs with great care.
10 Qoèlet cercò di trovare pregevoli detti e scrisse con esattezza parole di verità.	10 The Preacher sought to find pleasing words, and uprightly he wrote words of truth.
11 Le parole dei saggi sono come pungoli; come chiodi piantati, le raccolte di autori: esse sono date da un solo pastore.	11 The sayings of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings which are given by one Shepherd.
12 Quanto a ciò che è in più di questo, figlio mio, bada bene: i libri si moltiplicano senza fine ma il molto studio affatica il corpo.	12 My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
13 Conclusione del discorso, dopo che si è ascoltato ogni cosa: Temi Dio e osserva i suoi comandamenti, perché questo per l'uomo è tutto.	13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man.
14 Infatti, Dio citerà in giudizio ogni azione, tutto ciò che è occulto, bene o male.	14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.
