1 Ricòrdati del tuo creatore nei giorni della tua giovinezza, prima che vengano i giorni tristi e giungano gli anni di cui dovrai dire: "Non ci provo alcun gusto",	1 Remember your Creator while you are still young, before the bad days come, before the years comewhich, you wil say, give you no pleasure;
2 prima che si oscuri il sole, la luce, la luna e le stelle e ritornino le nubi dopo la pioggia;	2 before the sun and the light grow dim and the moon and stars, before the clouds return after the rain;
3 quando tremeranno i custodi della casa e si curveranno i gagliardi e cesseranno di lavorare le donne che macinano, perché rimaste in poche, e si offuscheranno quelle che guardano dalle finestre	3 the time when your watchmen become shaky, when strong men are bent double, when the women,one by one, quit grinding, and, as they look out of the window, find their sight growing dim.
4 e si chiuderanno le porte sulla strada; quando si abbasserà il rumore della mola e si attenuerà il cinguettio degli uccelli e si affievoliranno tutti i toni del canto;	4 When the street-door is kept shut, when the sound of grinding fades away, when the first cry of a birdwakes you up, when all the singing has stopped;
5 quando si avrà paura delle alture e degli spauracchi della strada; quando fiorirà il mandorlo e la locusta si trascinerà a stento e il cappero non avrà più effetto, poiché l'uomo se ne va nella dimora eterna e i piagnoni si aggirano per la strada;	5 when going uphil is an ordeal and you are frightened at every step you take- yet the almond tree is inflower and the grasshopper is weighed down and the caper-bush loses its tang; while you are on the way to youreverlasting home and the mourners are assembling in the street;
6 prima che si rompa il cordone d'argento e la lucerna d'oro s'infranga e si rompa l'anfora alla fonte e la carrucola cada nel pozzo	6 before the silver thread snaps, or the golden bowl is cracked, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain,or the pul ey broken at the wel -head:
7 e ritorni la polvere alla terra, com'era prima, e lo spirito torni a Dio che lo ha dato.	7 the dust returns to the earth from which it came, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
8 Vanità delle vanità, dice Qoèlet, e tutto è vanità.	8 Sheer futility, Qoheleth says, everything is futile.
9 Oltre a essere saggio, Qoèlet insegnò anche la scienza al popolo; ascoltò, indagò e compose un gran numero di massime.	9 Besides being a sage, Qoheleth taught the people what he himself knew, having weighed, studied andemended many proverbs.
10 Qoèlet cercò di trovare pregevoli detti e scrisse con esattezza parole di verità.	10 Qoheleth took pains to write in an attractive style and by it to convey truths.
11 Le parole dei saggi sono come pungoli; come chiodi piantati, le raccolte di autori: esse sono date da un solo pastore.	11 The sayings of a sage are like goads, like pegs positioned by shepherds: the same shepherd finds ause for both.
12 Quanto a ciò che è in più di questo, figlio mio, bada bene: i libri si moltiplicano senza fine ma il molto studio affatica il corpo.	12 Furthermore, my child, you must realise that writing books involves endless hard work, and that muchstudy wearies the body.
13 Conclusione del discorso, dopo che si è ascoltato ogni cosa: Temi Dio e osserva i suoi comandamenti, perché questo per l'uomo è tutto.	13 To sum up the whole matter: fear God and keep his commandments, for that is the duty of everyone.
14 Infatti, Dio citerà in giudizio ogni azione, tutto ciò che è occulto, bene o male.	14 For God wil cal al our deeds to judgement, all that is hidden, be it good or bad.
