¹ From Egypt Abram returned to the Negeb with his wife and al he possessed, and Lot with him.	¹ - Venne via adunque Abramo dall'Egitto, egli e la moglie, tutto quel che aveva, e Lot con lui, diretto a mezzodì.
² Abram was very rich in livestock, silver and gold.	² Era molto ricco in possessi, in oro ed argento.
³ By stages he went from the Negeb to Bethel, where he had first pitched his tent, between Bethel andAi,	³ Ritornò per la via per la quale era venuto, dal mezzodì a Betel, sino al luogo dove aveva prima fermato le tende, fra Betel e Hai,
⁴ at the place where he had formerly erected the altar. There Abram invoked the name of Yahweh.	⁴ ed aveva già prima alzato un altare; quivi [un'altra volta] invocò il nome del Signore.
⁵ Lot, who was travelling with Abram, had flocks and cattle of his own, and tents too.	⁵ Ma anche Lot, che era con Abramo, aveva greggi di pecore, armenti e tende.
⁶ The land was not sufficient to accommodate them both at once, for they had too many possessions tobe able to live together.	⁶ Nè la regione poteva contenerli in modo che stessero insieme; erano infatti molti i loro averi, e non potevano vivere insieme.
⁷ Dispute broke out between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and those of Lot. (The Canaanites andPerizzites were living in the country at the time.)	⁷ Tanto che avvenne una rissa tra i pastori del gregge di Abramo, e quelli di Lot. Il Cananeo ed il Ferezeo tenevano allora quella regione.
⁸ Accordingly Abram said to Lot, 'We do not want discord between us or between my herdsmen andyours, for we are kinsmen.	⁸ Disse dunque Abramo a Lot: «Di grazia, non vi siano litigi fra me e te, fra i pastori miei ed i tuoi, giacchè siam fratelli.
⁹ Is not the whole land open before you? Go in the opposite direction to me: if you take the left, I shalgo right; if you take the right, I shal go left.'	⁹ Ecco, tu hai innanzi a te tutta questa terra; separati da me, ti prego; se tu andrai a sinistra, terrò io la destra; se tu preferirai la destra, anderò io a sinistra».
¹⁰ Looking round, Lot saw all the Jordan plain, irrigated everywhere -- this was before Yahwehdestroyed Sodom and Gomorrah-like the garden of Yahweh or the land of Egypt, as far as Zoar.	¹⁰ Ed alzati gli occhi, Lot vide tutta la pianura intorno al Giordano, la quale, prima che il Signore sprofondasse Sodoma e Gomorra, era tutta irrigata, come il paradiso del Signore, e come l'Egitto per chi viene da Segor.
¹¹ So Lot chose all the Jordan plain for himself and moved off eastwards. Thus they parted company:	¹¹ Lot scelse per sè questa regione attorno al Giordano, e se n'andò verso oriente; e si separarono l'uno dall'altro.
¹² Abram settled in the land of Canaan; Lot settled among the cities of the plain, pitching his tents onthe outskirts of Sodom.	¹² Abramo abitò nella terra di Canaan; Lot invece dimorò nei villaggi che erano intorno al Giordano, e poi si fermò in Sodoma.
¹³ Now the people of Sodom were vicious and great sinners against Yahweh.	¹³ Ora i Sodomiti erano pessimi, peccatori a dismisura innanzi al Signore.
¹⁴ Yahweh said to Abram after Lot had parted company from him, 'Look al round from where you are,to north and south, to east and west,	¹⁴ Disse il Signore ad Abramo, dopo che Lot si fu da lui separato: «Alza gli occhi, e, dal luogo ove sei, guarda a settentrione ed a mezzogiorno, ad oriente ed occidente.
¹⁵ for al the land within sight I shal give to you and your descendants for ever.	¹⁵ Tutta la regione che tu vedi, io la darò a te ed alla tua discendenza, in eterno.
¹⁶ I shal make your descendants like the dust on the ground; when people succeed in counting thespecks of dust on the ground, then they wil be able to count your descendants too!	¹⁶ La tua discendenza sarà come la polvere della terra; se potrà un uomo contare i granellini della polvere della terra, potrà anche contare i tuoi discendenti.
¹⁷ On your feet! Travel the length and breadth of the country, for I mean to give it to you.'	¹⁷ Levati, e percorri questa regione in lunghezza e larghezza, che io te la darò».
¹⁸ So Abram moved his tent and went to settle at the Oak of Mamre, at Hebron, and there he built analtar to Yahweh.	¹⁸ Mosse dunque le sue tende, venne Abramo ad abitare nella valle di Mambre, in Hebron, e vi alzò un altare al Signore.
