NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
From Egypt Abram returned to the Negeb with his wife and al he possessed, and Lot with him.1 Ascendit ergo Abram de Ægypto, ipse et uxor ejus, et omnia quæ habebat, et Lot cum eo, ad australem plagam.
Abram was very rich in livestock, silver and gold.2 Erat autem dives valde in possessione auri et argenti.
By stages he went from the Negeb to Bethel, where he had first pitched his tent, between Bethel andAi,3 Reversusque est per iter, quo venerat, a meridie in Bethel, usque ad locum ubi prius fixerat tabernaculum inter Bethel et Hai,
at the place where he had formerly erected the altar. There Abram invoked the name of Yahweh.4 in loco altaris quod fecerat prius : et invocavit ibi nomen Domini.
Lot, who was travelling with Abram, had flocks and cattle of his own, and tents too.5 Sed et Lot qui erat cum Abram, fuerunt greges ovium, et armenta, et tabernacula.
The land was not sufficient to accommodate them both at once, for they had too many possessions tobe able to live together.6 Nec poterat eos capere terra, ut habitarent simul : erat quippe substantia eorum multa, et nequibant habitare communiter.
Dispute broke out between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and those of Lot. (The Canaanites andPerizzites were living in the country at the time.)7 Unde et facta est rixa inter pastores gregum Abram et Lot. Eo autem tempore Chananæus et Pherezæus habitabant in terra illa.
Accordingly Abram said to Lot, 'We do not want discord between us or between my herdsmen andyours, for we are kinsmen.8 Dixit ergo Abram ad Lot : Ne quæso sit jurgium inter me et te, et inter pastores meos et pastores tuos : fratres enim sumus.
Is not the whole land open before you? Go in the opposite direction to me: if you take the left, I shalgo right; if you take the right, I shal go left.'9 Ecce universa terra coram te est : recede a me, obsecro : si ad sinistram ieris, ego dexteram tenebo : si tu dexteram elegeris, ego ad sinistram pergam.
Looking round, Lot saw all the Jordan plain, irrigated everywhere -- this was before Yahwehdestroyed Sodom and Gomorrah-like the garden of Yahweh or the land of Egypt, as far as Zoar.10 Elevatis itaque Lot oculis, vidit omnem circa regionem Jordanis, quæ universa irrigabatur antequam subverteret Dominus Sodomam et Gomorrham, sicut paradisus Domini, et sicut Ægyptus venientibus in Segor.
So Lot chose all the Jordan plain for himself and moved off eastwards. Thus they parted company:11 Elegitque sibi Lot regionem circa Jordanem, et recessit ab oriente : divisique sunt alterutrum a fratre suo.
Abram settled in the land of Canaan; Lot settled among the cities of the plain, pitching his tents onthe outskirts of Sodom.12 Abram habitavit in terra Chanaan ; Lot vero moratus est in oppidis, quæ erant circa Jordanem, et habitavit in Sodomis.
Now the people of Sodom were vicious and great sinners against Yahweh.13 Homines autem Sodomitæ pessimi erant, et peccatores coram Domino nimis.
Yahweh said to Abram after Lot had parted company from him, 'Look al round from where you are,to north and south, to east and west,14 Dixitque Dominus ad Abram, postquam divisus est ab eo Lot : Leva oculos tuos et vide a loco, in quo nunc es, ad aquilonem et meridiem, ad orientem et occidentem.
for al the land within sight I shal give to you and your descendants for ever.15 Omnem terram, quam conspicis, tibi dabo, et semini tuo usque in sempiternum.
I shal make your descendants like the dust on the ground; when people succeed in counting thespecks of dust on the ground, then they wil be able to count your descendants too!16 Faciamque semen tuum sicut pulverem terræ : si quis potest hominum numerare pulverem terræ, semen quoque tuum numerare poterit.
On your feet! Travel the length and breadth of the country, for I mean to give it to you.'17 Surge, et perambula terram in longitudine et in latitudine sua : quia tibi daturus sum eam.
So Abram moved his tent and went to settle at the Oak of Mamre, at Hebron, and there he built analtar to Yahweh.18 Movens igitur tabernaculum suum Abram, venit, et habitavit juxta convallem Mambre, quæ est in Hebron : ædificavitque ibi altare Domino.
