NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
From Egypt Abram returned to the Negeb with his wife and al he possessed, and Lot with him.1 Ascendit ergo Abram de Ae gypto ipse et uxor eius et om nia, quae habebat, et Lot cum eo ad Nageb.
Abram was very rich in livestock, silver and gold.2 Abram autem erat dives valde in pecoribus, argento et auro.
By stages he went from the Negeb to Bethel, where he had first pitched his tent, between Bethel andAi,3 Et profectus est de mansione in mansionem a Nageb in Bethel usque ad locum, ubi prius fixerat tabernaculum inter Bethel et Hai,
at the place where he had formerly erected the altar. There Abram invoked the name of Yahweh.4 in loco altaris, quod fecerat prius, et invocavit ibi nomen Domini.
Lot, who was travelling with Abram, had flocks and cattle of his own, and tents too.5 Sed et Lot, qui ibat cum Abram, fuerunt greges ovium et armenta et tabernacula;
The land was not sufficient to accommodate them both at once, for they had too many possessions tobe able to live together.6 nec poterat eos capere terra, ut habitarent simul: erat quippe substantia eorum multa, et nequibant habitare communiter.
Dispute broke out between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and those of Lot. (The Canaanites andPerizzites were living in the country at the time.)7 Unde et facta est rixa inter pastores gregum Abram et pastores gregum Lot. Eo autem tempore Chananaeus et Pherezaeus habitabant in illa terra.
Accordingly Abram said to Lot, 'We do not want discord between us or between my herdsmen andyours, for we are kinsmen.8 Dixit ergo Abram ad Lot: “Ne, quaeso, sit iurgium inter me et te et inter pastores meos et pastores tuos: fratres enim sumus.
Is not the whole land open before you? Go in the opposite direction to me: if you take the left, I shalgo right; if you take the right, I shal go left.'9 Nonne universa terra coram te est? Recede a me, obsecro: si ad sinistram ieris, ego dexteram tenebo; si tu dexteram elegeris, ego ad sinistram pergam”.
Looking round, Lot saw all the Jordan plain, irrigated everywhere -- this was before Yahwehdestroyed Sodom and Gomorrah-like the garden of Yahweh or the land of Egypt, as far as Zoar.10 Elevatis itaque Lot oculis, vidit omnem circa regionem Iordanis, quae universa irrigabatur, antequam subverteret Dominus Sodomam et Gomorram, sicut paradisus Domini et sicut Aegyptus usque in Segor.
So Lot chose all the Jordan plain for himself and moved off eastwards. Thus they parted company:11 Elegitque sibi Lot omnem regionem circa Iordanem et recessit ad orientem; divisique sunt alterutrum a fratre suo.
Abram settled in the land of Canaan; Lot settled among the cities of the plain, pitching his tents onthe outskirts of Sodom.12 Abram habitavit in terra Chanaan; Lot vero moratus est in oppidis, quae erant circa Iordanem, et tabernacula movit usque ad Sodomam.
Now the people of Sodom were vicious and great sinners against Yahweh.13 Homines autem Sodomitae pessimi erant et peccatores coram Domino nimis.
Yahweh said to Abram after Lot had parted company from him, 'Look al round from where you are,to north and south, to east and west,14 Dixitque Dominus ad Abram, postquam divisus est Lot ab eo: “Leva oculos tuos et vide a loco, in quo nunc es, ad aquilonem et ad meridiem, ad orientem et ad occidentem:
for al the land within sight I shal give to you and your descendants for ever.15 omnem terram, quam conspicis, tibi dabo et semini tuo usque in sempiternum;
I shal make your descendants like the dust on the ground; when people succeed in counting thespecks of dust on the ground, then they wil be able to count your descendants too!16 faciamque semen tuum sicut pulverem terrae: si quis potest hominum numerare pulverem terrae, semen quoque tuum numerare poterit.
On your feet! Travel the length and breadth of the country, for I mean to give it to you.'17 Surge et perambula terram in longitudine et in latitudine sua, quia tibi daturus sum eam”.
So Abram moved his tent and went to settle at the Oak of Mamre, at Hebron, and there he built analtar to Yahweh.18 Movens igitur tabernaculum suum, Abram venit et habitavit iuxta Quercus Mambre, quae sunt in Hebron, aedificavitque ibi altare Domino.
