1 From Egypt Abram returned to the Negeb with his wife and al he possessed, and Lot with him.	1 D’Égypte, Abram remonta vers le Négueb, lui, sa femme et tout ce qu’il possédait, ainsi que Lot.
2 Abram was very rich in livestock, silver and gold.	2 Or Abram était très riche en troupeaux, en argent et en or.
3 By stages he went from the Negeb to Bethel, where he had first pitched his tent, between Bethel andAi,	3 Par étapes il alla du Négueb jusqu’à Béthel, jusqu’à l’endroit où il avait planté sa tente entre Béthel et Aï,
4 at the place where he had formerly erected the altar. There Abram invoked the name of Yahweh.	4 à l’endroit même où se trouvait l’autel qu’il avait construit précédemment et où il avait invoqué le nom de Yahvé.
5 Lot, who was travelling with Abram, had flocks and cattle of his own, and tents too.	5 Lot allait avec Abram. Lui aussi avait ses tentes, et il possédait du gros et du petit bétail.
6 The land was not sufficient to accommodate them both at once, for they had too many possessions tobe able to live together.	6 Mais le terrain ne leur permettait pas de vivre côte à côte: leurs troupeaux étaient trop nombreux pour qu’ils puissent rester ensemble.
7 Dispute broke out between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and those of Lot. (The Canaanites andPerizzites were living in the country at the time.)	7 Il y eut une dispute entre les bergers des troupeaux d’Abram et les bergers des troupeaux de Lot (les Cananéens et les Périsites habitaient alors le pays).
8 Accordingly Abram said to Lot, 'We do not want discord between us or between my herdsmen andyours, for we are kinsmen.	8 Alors Abram dit à Lot: “Qu’il n’y ait pas de querelle entre moi et toi, entre mes bergers et tes bergers, car nous sommes frères.
9 Is not the whole land open before you? Go in the opposite direction to me: if you take the left, I shalgo right; if you take the right, I shal go left.'	9 Tout le pays n’est-il pas à ta disposition? Séparons-nous donc: si tu vas à gauche, j’irai à droite, et si tu vas à droite, j’irai à gauche.”
10 Looking round, Lot saw all the Jordan plain, irrigated everywhere -- this was before Yahwehdestroyed Sodom and Gomorrah-like the garden of Yahweh or the land of Egypt, as far as Zoar.	10 Lot leva les yeux et regarda: toute la vallée du Jourdain était bien arrosée, (c’était avant la destruction de Sodome et de Gomorrhe par Yahvé). C’était comme un jardin de Yahvé, comme le pays d’Égypte en arrivant de Soar.
11 So Lot chose all the Jordan plain for himself and moved off eastwards. Thus they parted company:	11 Lot choisit donc pour lui toute la vallée du Jourdain et il partit vers l’Orient. C’est ainsi qu’ils se séparèrent l’un de l’autre.
12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan; Lot settled among the cities of the plain, pitching his tents onthe outskirts of Sodom.	12 Abram s’établit au pays de Canaan tandis que Lot s’établissait dans les villes de la vallée et transportait ses tentes jusqu’à Sodome.
13 Now the people of Sodom were vicious and great sinners against Yahweh.	13 Or les habitants de Sodome étaient mauvais, de grands pécheurs devant Yahvé!
14 Yahweh said to Abram after Lot had parted company from him, 'Look al round from where you are,to north and south, to east and west,	14 Après le départ de Lot, Yahvé dit à Abram: “Lève les yeux et regarde de l’endroit où tu te trouves vers le nord et vers le midi, vers l’orient et vers l’occident.
15 for al the land within sight I shal give to you and your descendants for ever.	15 Tout le pays que tu vois, je te le donnerai à toi et à ta descendance pour toujours.
16 I shal make your descendants like the dust on the ground; when people succeed in counting thespecks of dust on the ground, then they wil be able to count your descendants too!	16 Je rendrai ta descendance aussi nombreuse que la poussière de la terre. Quand on pourra compter les grains de poussière de la terre, alors aussi on comptera tes descendants.
17 On your feet! Travel the length and breadth of the country, for I mean to give it to you.'	17 Lève-toi! Parcours le pays en long et en large car c’est celui que je te donnerai.”
18 So Abram moved his tent and went to settle at the Oak of Mamre, at Hebron, and there he built analtar to Yahweh.	18 Abram leva la tente et vint s’établir au chêne de Mambré qui est à Hébron, et là il construisit un autel à Yahvé.
