1 From Egypt Abram returned to the Negeb with his wife and al he possessed, and Lot with him.	1 - Venne via adunque Abramo dall'Egitto, egli e la moglie, tutto quel che aveva, e Lot con lui, diretto a mezzodì.
2 Abram was very rich in livestock, silver and gold.	2 Era molto ricco in possessi, in oro ed argento.
3 By stages he went from the Negeb to Bethel, where he had first pitched his tent, between Bethel andAi,	3 Ritornò per la via per la quale era venuto, dal mezzodì a Betel, sino al luogo dove aveva prima fermato le tende, fra Betel e Hai,
4 at the place where he had formerly erected the altar. There Abram invoked the name of Yahweh.	4 ed aveva già prima alzato un altare; quivi [un'altra volta] invocò il nome del Signore.
5 Lot, who was travelling with Abram, had flocks and cattle of his own, and tents too.	5 Ma anche Lot, che era con Abramo, aveva greggi di pecore, armenti e tende.
6 The land was not sufficient to accommodate them both at once, for they had too many possessions tobe able to live together.	6 Nè la regione poteva contenerli in modo che stessero insieme; erano infatti molti i loro averi, e non potevano vivere insieme.
7 Dispute broke out between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and those of Lot. (The Canaanites andPerizzites were living in the country at the time.)	7 Tanto che avvenne una rissa tra i pastori del gregge di Abramo, e quelli di Lot. Il Cananeo ed il Ferezeo tenevano allora quella regione.
8 Accordingly Abram said to Lot, 'We do not want discord between us or between my herdsmen andyours, for we are kinsmen.	8 Disse dunque Abramo a Lot: «Di grazia, non vi siano litigi fra me e te, fra i pastori miei ed i tuoi, giacchè siam fratelli.
9 Is not the whole land open before you? Go in the opposite direction to me: if you take the left, I shalgo right; if you take the right, I shal go left.'	9 Ecco, tu hai innanzi a te tutta questa terra; separati da me, ti prego; se tu andrai a sinistra, terrò io la destra; se tu preferirai la destra, anderò io a sinistra».
10 Looking round, Lot saw all the Jordan plain, irrigated everywhere -- this was before Yahwehdestroyed Sodom and Gomorrah-like the garden of Yahweh or the land of Egypt, as far as Zoar.	10 Ed alzati gli occhi, Lot vide tutta la pianura intorno al Giordano, la quale, prima che il Signore sprofondasse Sodoma e Gomorra, era tutta irrigata, come il paradiso del Signore, e come l'Egitto per chi viene da Segor.
11 So Lot chose all the Jordan plain for himself and moved off eastwards. Thus they parted company:	11 Lot scelse per sè questa regione attorno al Giordano, e se n'andò verso oriente; e si separarono l'uno dall'altro.
12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan; Lot settled among the cities of the plain, pitching his tents onthe outskirts of Sodom.	12 Abramo abitò nella terra di Canaan; Lot invece dimorò nei villaggi che erano intorno al Giordano, e poi si fermò in Sodoma.
13 Now the people of Sodom were vicious and great sinners against Yahweh.	13 Ora i Sodomiti erano pessimi, peccatori a dismisura innanzi al Signore.
14 Yahweh said to Abram after Lot had parted company from him, 'Look al round from where you are,to north and south, to east and west,	14 Disse il Signore ad Abramo, dopo che Lot si fu da lui separato: «Alza gli occhi, e, dal luogo ove sei, guarda a settentrione ed a mezzogiorno, ad oriente ed occidente.
15 for al the land within sight I shal give to you and your descendants for ever.	15 Tutta la regione che tu vedi, io la darò a te ed alla tua discendenza, in eterno.
16 I shal make your descendants like the dust on the ground; when people succeed in counting thespecks of dust on the ground, then they wil be able to count your descendants too!	16 La tua discendenza sarà come la polvere della terra; se potrà un uomo contare i granellini della polvere della terra, potrà anche contare i tuoi discendenti.
17 On your feet! Travel the length and breadth of the country, for I mean to give it to you.'	17 Levati, e percorri questa regione in lunghezza e larghezza, che io te la darò».
18 So Abram moved his tent and went to settle at the Oak of Mamre, at Hebron, and there he built analtar to Yahweh.	18 Mosse dunque le sue tende, venne Abramo ad abitare nella valle di Mambre, in Hebron, e vi alzò un altare al Signore.
