BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Entre tanto para tus santos había una grandísima luz. Los egipcios, que oían su voz aunque no distinguían su figura, les proclamaban dichosos por no haber padecido ellos también;	1 For your holy ones, however, there was a very great light. The Egyptians, who could hear them but notsee them, cal ed them fortunate because they had not suffered too;
2 les daban gracias porque agraviados no se vengaban y les pedían perdón por su conducta hostil.	2 they thanked them for doing no injury in return for previous wrongs and asked forgiveness for theirpast il -wil .
3 En vez de tinieblas, diste a los tuyos una columna de fuego, guía a través de rutas desconocidas, y sol inofensivo en su gloriosa emigración.	3 In contrast to the darkness, you gave your people a pil ar of blazing fire to guide them on theirunknown journey, a mild sun for their ambitious migration.
4 Bien merecían verse de luz privados y prisioneros de tinieblas, los que en prisión tuvieron encerrados a aquellos hijos tuyos que habían de dar al mundo la luz incorruptible de la Ley.	4 But well those others deserved to be deprived of light and imprisoned in darkness, for they had kept incaptivity your children, by whom the incorruptible light of the Law was to be given to the world.
5 Por haber decretado matar a los niños de los santos, salvándose de los hijos expuestos uno tan sólo, les arrebataste en castigo la multitud de sus hijos y a ellos, a una, les hiciste perecer bajo la violencia de las aguas.	5 As they had resolved to kill the infants of the holy ones, and as of those exposed only one child hadbeen saved, you punished them by carrying off their horde of children and by destroying them al in the wildwater.
6 Aquella noche fue previamente conocida por nuestros padres, para que se confortasen al reconocer firmes los juramentos en que creyeron.	6 That night had been known in advance to our ancestors, so that, wel knowing him in whom they hadput their trust, they would be sure of his promises.
7 Tu pueblo esperaba a la vez la salvación de los justos y la destrucción de sus enemigos.	7 Your people thus were waiting both for the rescue of the upright and for the ruin of the enemy;
8 Y, en efecto, con el castigo mismo de nuestros adversarios, nos colmaste de gloria llamándonos a ti.	8 for by the very vengeance that you exacted on our adversaries, you glorified us by calling us to you.
9 Los santos hijos de los buenos ofrecieron sacrificios en secreto y establecieron unánimes esta ley divina: que los santos correrían en común las mismas aventuras y riesgos; y, previamente, cantaron ya los himnos de los Padres.	9 So the holy children of the good offered sacrifice in secret and with one accord enacted this holy law:that the holy ones should share good things and dangers alike; and forthwith they chanted the hymns of theancestors.
10 A estos cánticos respondía el discordante clamor de sus enemigos, se disfundían los lamentos de los que lloraban a sus hijos.	10 In echo came the discordant cries of their enemies, and the pitiful wails of people mourning for theirchildren could be heard from far away.
11 Un mismo castigo alcanzaba al esclavo y al señor; el hombre del pueblo sufría la misma pena que el rey.	11 One and the same punishment had struck slave and master alike, and now commoner and king hadthe same sufferings to endure.
12 Todos a la vez contaban con muertos innumerables abatidos por un mismo género de muerte. Los vivos no se bastaban a darles sepultura, como que, de un solo golpe, había caído la flor de su descendencia.	12 Struck by the same death, al had innumerable dead. There were not enough living left to bury them,for, at one stroke, the flower of their offspring had perished.
13 Mantenidos en absoluta incredulidad por los artificios de la magia, acabaron por confesar, ante la muerte de sus primogénitos, que aquel pueblo era hijo de Dios.	13 Those whose spel s had made them completely incredulous, when faced with the destruction of theirfirst-born, acknowledged this people to be child of God.
14 Cuando un sosegado silencio todo lo envolvía y la noche se encontraba en la mitad de su carrera,	14 When peaceful silence lay over all, and night had run the half of her swift course,
15 tu Palabra omnipotente, cual implacable guerrero, saltó del cielo, desde el trono real, en medio de una tierra condenada al exterminio. Empuñando como afilada espada tu decreto irrevocable,	15 down from the heavens, from the royal throne, leapt your al -powerful Word like a pitiless warrior intothe heart of a land doomed to destruction. Carrying your unambiguous command like a sharp sword,
16 se detuvo y sembró la muerte por doquier; y tocaba el cielo mientras pisaba la tierra.	16 it stood, and fil ed the universe with death; though standing on the earth, it touched the sky.
17 Entonces, de repente, sueños y horribles visiones les sobresaltaron, les sobrevinieron terrores imprevistos.	17 Immediately, dreams and gruesome visions overwhelmed them with terror, unexpected fearsassailed them.
18 Aquí y allá tendidos, ya moribundos, daban a conocer la causa de su muerte,	18 Hurled down, some here, some there, half dead, they were able to say why they were dying;
19 pues los sueños que les habían pertubado, se lo habían indicado a tiempo para que no muriesen sin saber la razón de su desgracia.	19 for the dreams that had troubled them had warned them why beforehand, so that they should notperish without knowing why they were being afflicted.
20 También a los justos les alcanzó la prueba de la muerte; una multitud de ellos pereció en el desierto. Pero no duró la Cólera mucho tiempo,	20 Experience of death, however, touched the upright too, and a great many were struck down in thedesert. But the Retribution did not last long,
21 que pronto un hombre irreprochable salió en su defensa. Con las armas de su propio ministerio, la oración y el incienso expiatorio, se enfrentó a la ira y dio fin a la plaga, mostrando con ello que era en verdad siervo tuyo.	21 for a blameless man hurried to their defence. Wielding the weapons of his sacred office, prayer andexpiating incense, he confronted Retribution and put an end to the plague, thus showing that he was yourservant.
22 Y venció a la Cólera no con la fuerza de su cuerpo, ni con el poder de las armas, sino que sometió con su palabra al que traía el castigo recordándole los juramentos hechos a los Padres y las alianzas.	22 He overcame Hostility, not by physical strength, nor by force of arms; but by word he prevailed overthe Punisher, by recal ing the oaths made to the Fathers, and the covenants.
23 Cuando ya los muertos, unos sobre otros, yacían hacinados, frenó, interponiéndose, el avance de la Cólera y le cerró el camino hacia los que todavía vivían.	23 Already the corpses lay piled in heaps, when he interposed and beat Retribution back and cut off itsapproach to the living.
24 Llevaba en su vestido talar el mundo entero, grabados en cuatro hileras de piedras los nombres gloriosos de los Padres y tu majestad en la diadema de su cabeza.	24 For the whole world was on his flowing robe, the glorious names of the Fathers engraved on the fourrows of stones, and your Majesty on the diadem on his head.
25 Ante esto, el Exterminador cedió y se atemorizó; pues era suficiente la sola experiencia de tu Cólera.	25 From these the Destroyer recoiled, he was afraid of these. This one experience of Retribution wasenough.
