1 Entre tanto para tus santos había una grandísima luz. Los egipcios, que oían su voz aunque no distinguían su figura, les proclamaban dichosos por no haber padecido ellos también;	1 But your holy ones had very great light; And those others, who heard their voices but did not see their forms, since now they themselves had suffered, called them blest;
2 les daban gracias porque agraviados no se vengaban y les pedían perdón por su conducta hostil.	2 And because they who formerly had been wronged did not harm them, they thanked them, and pleaded with them, for the sake of the difference between them.
3 En vez de tinieblas, diste a los tuyos una columna de fuego, guía a través de rutas desconocidas, y sol inofensivo en su gloriosa emigración.	3 Instead of this, you furnished the flaming pillar which was a guide on the unknown way, and the mild sun for an honorable migration.
4 Bien merecían verse de luz privados y prisioneros de tinieblas, los que en prisión tuvieron encerrados a aquellos hijos tuyos que habían de dar al mundo la luz incorruptible de la Ley.	4 For those deserved to be deprived of light and imprisoned by darkness, who had kept your sons confined through whom the imperishable light of the law was to be given to the world.
5 Por haber decretado matar a los niños de los santos, salvándose de los hijos expuestos uno tan sólo, les arrebataste en castigo la multitud de sus hijos y a ellos, a una, les hiciste perecer bajo la violencia de las aguas.	5 When they determined to put to death the infants of the holy ones, and when a single boy had been cast forth but saved, As a reproof you carried off their multitude of sons and made them perish all at once in the mighty water.
6 Aquella noche fue previamente conocida por nuestros padres, para que se confortasen al reconocer firmes los juramentos en que creyeron.	6 That night was known beforehand to our fathers, that, with sure knowledge of the oaths in which they put their faith, they might have courage.
7 Tu pueblo esperaba a la vez la salvación de los justos y la destrucción de sus enemigos.	7 Your people awaited the salvation of the just and the destruction of their foes.
8 Y, en efecto, con el castigo mismo de nuestros adversarios, nos colmaste de gloria llamándonos a ti.	8 For when you punished our adversaries, in this you glorified us whom you had summoned.
9 Los santos hijos de los buenos ofrecieron sacrificios en secreto y establecieron unánimes esta ley divina: que los santos correrían en común las mismas aventuras y riesgos; y, previamente, cantaron ya los himnos de los Padres.	9 For in secret the holy children of the good were offering sacrifice and putting into effect with one accord the divine institution, That your holy ones should share alike the same good things and dangers, having previously sung the praises of the fathers.
10 A estos cánticos respondía el discordante clamor de sus enemigos, se disfundían los lamentos de los que lloraban a sus hijos.	10 But the discordant cry of their enemies responded, and the piteous wail of mourning for children was borne to them.
11 Un mismo castigo alcanzaba al esclavo y al señor; el hombre del pueblo sufría la misma pena que el rey.	11 And the slave was smitten with the same retribution as his master; even the plebeian suffered the same as the king.
12 Todos a la vez contaban con muertos innumerables abatidos por un mismo género de muerte. Los vivos no se bastaban a darles sepultura, como que, de un solo golpe, había caído la flor de su descendencia.	12 And all alike by a single death had countless dead; For the living were not even sufficient for the burial, since at a single instant their nobler offspring were destroyed.
13 Mantenidos en absoluta incredulidad por los artificios de la magia, acabaron por confesar, ante la muerte de sus primogénitos, que aquel pueblo era hijo de Dios.	13 For though they disbelieved at every turn on account of sorceries, at the destruction of the first-born they acknowledged that the people was God's son.
14 Cuando un sosegado silencio todo lo envolvía y la noche se encontraba en la mitad de su carrera,	14 For when peaceful stillness compassed everything and the night in its swift course was half spent,
15 tu Palabra omnipotente, cual implacable guerrero, saltó del cielo, desde el trono real, en medio de una tierra condenada al exterminio. Empuñando como afilada espada tu decreto irrevocable,	15 Your all-powerful word from heaven's royal throne bounded, a fierce warrior, into the doomed land,
16 se detuvo y sembró la muerte por doquier; y tocaba el cielo mientras pisaba la tierra.	16 bearing the sharp sword of your inexorable decree. And as he alighted, he filled every place with death; he still reached to heaven, while he stood upon the earth.
17 Entonces, de repente, sueños y horribles visiones les sobresaltaron, les sobrevinieron terrores imprevistos.	17 Then, forthwith, visions in horrible dreams perturbed them and unexpected fears assailed them;
18 Aquí y allá tendidos, ya moribundos, daban a conocer la causa de su muerte,	18 And cast half-dead, one here, another there, each was revealing the reason for his dying.
19 pues los sueños que les habían pertubado, se lo habían indicado a tiempo para que no muriesen sin saber la razón de su desgracia.	19 For the dreams that disturbed them had proclaimed this beforehand, lest they perish unaware of why they suffered ill.
20 También a los justos les alcanzó la prueba de la muerte; una multitud de ellos pereció en el desierto. Pero no duró la Cólera mucho tiempo,	20 But the trial of death touched at one time even the just, and in the desert a plague struck the multitude; Yet not for long did the anger last.
21 que pronto un hombre irreprochable salió en su defensa. Con las armas de su propio ministerio, la oración y el incienso expiatorio, se enfrentó a la ira y dio fin a la plaga, mostrando con ello que era en verdad siervo tuyo.	21 For the blameless man hastened to be their champion, bearing the weapon of his special office, prayer and the propitiation of incense; He withstood the wrath and put a stop to the calamity, showing that he was your servant.
22 Y venció a la Cólera no con la fuerza de su cuerpo, ni con el poder de las armas, sino que sometió con su palabra al que traía el castigo recordándole los juramentos hechos a los Padres y las alianzas.	22 And he overcame the bitterness not by bodily strength, not by force of arms; But by word he overcame the smiter, recalling the sworn covenants with their fathers.
23 Cuando ya los muertos, unos sobre otros, yacían hacinados, frenó, interponiéndose, el avance de la Cólera y le cerró el camino hacia los que todavía vivían.	23 For when corpses had already fallen one on another in heaps, he stood in the midst and checked the anger, and cut off the way to the living.
24 Llevaba en su vestido talar el mundo entero, grabados en cuatro hileras de piedras los nombres gloriosos de los Padres y tu majestad en la diadema de su cabeza.	24 For on his full-length robe was the whole world, and the glories of the fathers were carved in four rows upon the stones, and your grandeur was on the crown upon his head.
25 Ante esto, el Exterminador cedió y se atemorizó; pues era suficiente la sola experiencia de tu Cólera.	25 To these names the destroyer yielded, and these he feared; for the mere trial of anger was enough.
