BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Ella dirigió felizmente sus empresas por medio de un profeta santo.	1 She made their actions successful, by means of a holy prophet.
2 Atravesaron un desierto deshabitado y fijaron sus tiendas en parajes inaccesibles;	2 They journeyed through an unpeopled desert and pitched their tents in inaccessible places.
3 hicieron frente a sus enemigos y rechazaron a sus adversarios.	3 They stood firm against their enemies, fought off their foes.
4 Tuvieron sed y te invocaron: de una roca abrupta se les dio agua, de una piedra dura, remedio para su sed.	4 On you they cal ed when they were thirsty, and from the rocky cliff water was given them, from hardstone a remedy for their thirst.
5 Lo mismo que fue para sus enemigos un castigo, fue para ellos en su apuro un beneficio.	5 Thus, what had served to punish their enemies became a benefit for them in their difficulties.
6 En vez de la fuente perenne de un río enturbiado por una mezcla de sangre y barro	6 Whereas their enemies had only the ever-flowing source of a river fouled with mingled blood and mud,
7 en pena de su decreto infanticida, diste a los tuyos inesperadamente un agua abundante,	7 to punish them for their decree of infanticide, you gave your people, against al hope, water inabundance,
8 mostrándoles por la sed que entonces sufrieron de qué modo habías castigado a sus adversarios.	8 once you had shown by the thirst that they were experiencing how severely you were punishing theirenemies.
9 Pues cuando sufrieron su prueba - si bien con misericordia corregidos - conocieron cómo los impíos, juzgados con cólera, eran torturados;	9 From their own ordeals, which were only loving correction, they realised how an angry sentence wastormenting the godless;
10 pues a ellos los habías probado como padre que amonesta, pero a los otros los habías castigado como rey severo que condena.	10 for you had tested your own as a father admonishes, but the others you had punished as a pitilessking condemns,
11 Tanto estando lejos como cerca, igualmente se consumían,	11 and, whether far or near, they were equal y afflicted.
12 pues una doble tristeza se apoderó de ellos, y un lamento con el recuerdo del pasado:	12 For a double sorrow seized on them, and a groaning at the memory of the past;
13 porque, al oír que lo mismo que era su castigo, era para los otros un beneficio, reconocieron al Señor;	13 when they learned that the punishments they were receiving were beneficial to the others, theyrealised it was the Lord,
14 pues al que antes hicieron exponer y luego rechazaron con escarnio, al final de los acontecimientos le admiraron después de padecer una sed bien diferente de la de los justos.	14 while for the man whom long before they had exposed and later mockingly rebuffed, they felt onlyadmiration when al was done, having suffered a thirst so different from that of the upright.
15 Por sus locos e inicuos pensamientos por los que, extraviados, adoraban reptiles sin razón y bichos despreciables, les enviaste en castigo muchedumbre de animales sin razón,	15 For their foolish and wicked notions which led them astray into worshipping mindless reptiles andcontemptible beetles, you sent a horde of mindless animals to punish them
16 para que aprendiesen que, por donde uno peca, por allí es castigado.	16 and to teach them that the agent of sin is the agent of punishment.
17 Pues bien podía tu mano omnipotente - ella que de informe materia había creado el mundo - enviar contra ellos muchedumbre de osos o audaces leones,	17 And indeed your al -powerful hand which created the world from formless matter, did not lack meansto unleash a horde of bears or savage lions on them
18 o bien fieras desconocidas, entonces creadas, llenas de furor, respirando aliento de fuego, lanzando humo hediondo o despidiendo de sus ojos terribles centellas,	18 or unknown beasts, newly created, ful of rage, breathing out fire, or puffing out stinking smoke, orflashing fearful sparks from their eyes,
19 capaces, no ya de aniquilarlos con sus ataques, sino de destruirlos con sólo su estremecedor aspecto.	19 beasts able not only to destroy them, being so savage, but even to strike them dead by their terrifyingappearance.
20 Y aun sin esto, de un simple soplo podían sucumbir, perseguidos por la Justicia, aventados por el soplo de tu poder. Pero tú todo lo dispusiste con medida, número y peso.	20 However, without these, one breath could have blown them over, pursued by Justice, whirled awayby the breath of your power. You, however, ordered all things by measure, number and weight.
21 Pues el actuar con inmenso poder siempre está en tu mano. ¿Quién se podrá oponer a la fuerza de tu brazo?	21 For your great power is always at your service, and who can withstand the might of your arm?
22 Como lo que basta a inclinar una balanza, es el mundo entero en tu presencia, como la gota de rocío que a la mañana baja sobre la tierra.	22 The whole world, for you, can no more than tip a balance, like a drop of morning dew falling on theground.
23 Te compadeces de todos porque todo lo puedes y disimulas los pecados de los hombres para que se arrepientan.	23 Yet you are merciful to al , because you are almighty, you overlook people's sins, so that they canrepent.
24 Amas a todos los seres y nada de lo que hiciste aborreces, pues, si algo odiases, no lo habrías hecho.	24 Yes, you love everything that exists, and nothing that you have made disgusts you, since, if you hadhated something, you would not have made it.
25 Y ¿cómo habría permanecido algo si no hubieses querido? ¿Cómo se habría conservado lo que no hubieses llamado?	25 And how could a thing subsist, had you not wil ed it? Or how be preserved, if not cal ed forth by you?
26 Mas tú con todas las cosas eres indulgente, porque son tuyas, Señor que amas la vida,	26 No, you spare al , since al is yours, Lord, lover of life!
