Then six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethania, where Lazarus had died, whom Jesus raised up.1 Sechs Tage nun vor dem Pascha kam Jesus nach Bethanien, wo Lazarus war, den Jesus von den Toten auferweckt hatte.
And they made a dinner for him there. And Martha was ministering. And truly, Lazarus was one of those who were sitting at table with him.2 Man bereitete ihm dort ein Mahl, und Martha bediente; Lazarus war einer von denen, die mit ihm zu Tische waren.
And then Mary took twelve ounces of pure spikenard ointment, very precious, and she anointed the feet of Jesus, and she wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.3 Maria aber nahm ein Pfund echten, kostbaren Nardenöls, salbte die Füße Jesu und trocknete mit ihren Haaren seine Füße; das Haus wurde erfüllt vom Dufte des Salböls.
Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was soon to betray him, said,4 Da sagte Judas Iskariot, einer von seinen Jüngern, der ihn verraten sollte:
“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the needy?”5 "Warum hat man dieses Salböl nicht für dreihundert Denare verkauft und den Armen gegeben?"
Now he said this, not out of concern for the needy, but because he was a thief and, since he held the purse, he used to carry what was put into it.6 Das sagte er aber nicht, weil ihm an den Armen lag, sondern weil er ein Dieb war und als Kassenführer das, was eingelegt wurde, wegnahm.
But Jesus said: “Permit her, so that she may keep it against the day of my burial.7 Da sprach Jesus: "Laß sie! Für den Tag meines Begräbnisses sollte sie es aufbewahren.
For the poor, you have with you always. But me, you do always not have.”8 Denn die Armen habt ihr allezeit bei euch; mich aber habt ihr nicht allezeit."
Now a great multitude of the Jews knew that he was in that place, and so they came, not so much because of Jesus, but so that they might see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.9 Es erfuhr nun die große Menge des jüdischen Volkes, daß er dort sei, und sie kamen nicht allein Jesu wegen, sondern auch um den Lazarus zu sehen, den er von den Toten auferweckt hatte.
And the leaders of the priests planned to put Lazarus to death also.10 Die Hohenpriester aber gingen mit dem Gedanken um, auch den Lazarus zu töten,
For many of the Jews, because of him, were going away and were believing in Jesus.11 weil viele von den Juden seinetwegen hingingen und an Jesus glaubten.
Then, on the next day, the great crowd that had come to the feast day, when they had heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,12 Als am folgenden Tag das zahlreich zum Fest gekommene Volk vernahm, Jesus komme nach Jerusalem,
took branches of palm trees, and they went ahead to meet him. And they were crying out: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who arrives in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel!”13 nahmen sie Palmzweige, zogen ihm entgegen und riefen: "Hosanna! Gepriesen sei, der da kommt im Namen des Herrn, und der König von Israel!" (Ps 118,25f).
And Jesus found a small donkey, and he sat upon it, just as it is written:14 Jesus aber fand einen jungen Esel und setzte sich darauf, wie geschrieben steht:
“Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion. Behold, your king arrives, sitting on the colt of a donkey.”15 "Fürchte dich nicht, Tochter Sion! Siehe, dein König kommt, sitzend auf einem Eselsfüllen" (Is 48,9; Zach 9,9).
At first, his disciples did not realize these things. But when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him, and that these things happened to him.16 Dies verstanden seine Jünger zunächst nicht; als aber Jesus verherrlicht war, dachten sie daran, daß dies von ihm geschrieben war und daß sie ihm dies getan hatten.
And so the crowd that had been with him, when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead, offered testimony.17 Das Volk aber, das bei ihm war, als er den Lazarus aus dem Grabe rief und von den Toten erweckte, legte Zeugnis davon ab.
Because of this, too, the crowd went out to meet him. For they heard that he had accomplished this sign.18 Deswegen waren ihm auch die Scharen entgegengezogen, weil sie gehört hatten, daß er dieses Zeichen getan habe.
Therefore, the Pharisees said among themselves: “Do you see that we are accomplishing nothing? Behold, the entire world has gone after him.”19 Die Pharisäer aber sagten zueinander: "Da seht ihr, daß ihr nichts ausrichtet. Seht, die ganze Welt lief hinter ihm her!"
Now there were certain Gentiles among those who went up so that they might worship on the feast day.20 Es waren unter denen, die hinaufgezogen waren, um am Feste anzubeten, einige Hellenen.
Therefore, these approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and they petitioned him, saying: “Sir, we want to see Jesus.”21 Diese traten an Philippus heran, der von Bethsaida in Galiläa war, und baten ihn: "Herr, wir möchten Jesus sehen!"
Philip went and told Andrew. Next, Andrew and Philip told Jesus.22 Philippus ging und sagte es dem Andreas, und Andreas und Philippus gingen und sagten es Jesus.
But Jesus answered them by saying: “The hour arrives when the Son of man shall be glorified.23 Jesus erwiderte ihnen: "Gekommen ist die Stunde, daß der Menschensohn verherrlicht wird.
Amen, amen, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies,24 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wenn das Weizenkorn nicht in die Erde fällt und stirbt,
it remains alone. But if it dies, it yields much fruit. Whoever loves his life, will lose it. And whoever hates his life in this world, preserves it unto eternal life.25 bleibt es allein; wenn es aber stirbt, bringt es viele Frucht. Wer sein Leben liebt, verliert es, und wer sein Leben in dieser Welt haßt, wird es zu ewigem Leben bewahren.
If anyone serves me, let him follow me. And where I am, there too my minister shall be. If anyone has served me, my Father will honor him.26 Wenn einer mir dient, der folge mir, und wo ich bin, wird auch mein Diener sein. Wenn einer mir dient, wird der Vater ihn ehren.
Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say? Father, save me from this hour? But it is for this reason that I came to this hour.27 Nun ist meine Seele erschüttert! Was soll ich sagen? Vater, rette mich aus dieser Stunde? Aber deshalb kam ich in diese Stunde.
Father, glorify your name!” And then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”28 Vater, verherrliche deinen Namen!" Da kam eine Stimme vom Himmel: "Ich habe verherrlicht und werde wieder verherrlichen!"
Therefore, the crowd, which was standing near and had heard it, said that it was like thunder. Others were saying, “An Angel was speaking with him.”29 Das Volk, das dastand und es gehört hatte, sagte: "Es hat gedonnert." Andere sagten: "Ein Engel hat mit ihm gesprochen."
Jesus responded and said: “This voice came, not for my sake, but for your sakes.30 Jesus aber entgegnete: "Diese Stimme kam nicht um meinetwillen, sondern um euretwillen.
Now is the judgment of the world. Now will the prince of this world be cast out.31 Nun ist das Gericht über diese Welt; nun wird der Fürst dieser Welt hinausgeworfen werden.
And when I have been lifted up from the earth, I will draw all things to myself.”32 Ich aber werde, wenn ich erhöht bin von der Erde, alle an mich ziehen."
(Now he said this, signifying what kind of death he would die.)33 Das sagte er, um anzudeuten, welchen Todes er sterben würde.
The crowd answered him: “We have heard, from the law, that the Christ remains forever. And so how can you say, ‘The Son of man must be lifted up?’ Who is this Son of man?”34 Es entgegnete ihm das Volk: "Wir haben aus dem Gesetz vernommen, daß der Messias ewig bleibt; wie sagst du nun: Der Menschensohn muß erhöht werden? Wer ist dieser Menschensohn?"
Therefore, Jesus said to them: “For a brief time, the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. But whoever walks in darkness does not know where is he going.35 Jesus erwiderte ihnen: "Noch kurze Zeit ist das Licht unter euch. Wandelt, solange ihr das Licht habt, damit nicht die Finsternis euch überfalle; wer in der Finsternis wandelt, weiß nicht, wohin er geht.
While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may be sons of the Light.” Jesus spoke these things, and then he went away and hid himself from them.36 Solange ihr das Licht habt, glaubt an das Licht, damit ihr Kinder des Lichtes werdet.".Nach diesen Worten ging er weg und verbarg sich vor ihnen.
And although he had done such great signs in their presence, they did not believe in him,37 Obwohl er so große Zeichen vor ihren Augen getan hatte, glaubten sie nicht an ihn.
so that the word of the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, which says: “Lord, who has believed in our hearing? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”38 So sollte das Wort des Propheten Isaias erfüllt werden, das er sprach: "Herr, wer glaubte unserer Botschaft, und der Arm des Herrn, wem wurde er offenbar?" (Is 53,1).
Because of this, they were not able to believe, for Isaiah said again:39 Deshalb konnten sie nicht glauben, weil Isaias ferner gesagt hat:
“He has blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, so that they may not see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and be converted: and then I would heal them.”40 "Er hat ihre Augen geblendet und ihr Herz verhärtet, so daß sie nicht sehen mit den Augen und nicht verstehen mit dem Herzen und sich bekehren und ich sie heile" (Is 6,9f).
These things Isaiah said, when he saw his glory and was speaking about him.41 Dies sagte Isaias, weil er seine Herrlichkeit schaute und von ihm redete.
Yet truly, many of the leaders also believed in him. But because of the Pharisees, they did not confess him, so that they would not be cast out of the synagogue.42 Gleichwohl glaubten auch viele von den Führenden an ihn; doch der Pharisäer wegen bekannten sie es nicht, um nicht aus der Synagoge ausgestoßen zu werden.
For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.43 Denn sie liebten die Ehre bei den Menschen mehr als die Ehre bei Gott.
But Jesus cried out and said: “Whoever believes in me, does not believe in me, but in him who sent me.44 Jesus aber rief: "Wer an mich glaubt, der glaubt nicht an mich sondern an den, der mich gesandt hat,
And whoever sees me, sees him who sent me.45 und wer mich sieht, sieht den, der mich gesandt hat.
I have arrived as a light to the world, so that all who believe in me might not remain in darkness.46 Ich bin als Licht in die Welt gekommen, damit jeder, der an mich glaubt, nicht in der Finsternis bleibe.
And if anyone has heard my words and not kept them, I do not judge him. For I did not come so that I may judge the world, but so that I may save the world.47 Wenn einer meine Worte hört und nicht bewahrt, den richte ich nicht; denn ich bin nicht gekommen, die Welt zu richten, sondern die Welt zu retten.
Whoever despises me and does not accept my words has one who judges him. The word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him on the last day.48 Wer mich ablehnt und meine Worte nicht annimmt, der hat seinen Richter: das Wort, das ich verkündet habe, wird ihn richten am Jüngsten Tage.
For I am not speaking from myself, but from the Father who sent me. He gave a commandment to me as to what I should say and how I should speak.49 Denn nicht aus mir selbst habe ich verkündet, sondern der Vater, der mich sandte, er selbst hat mir Auftrag gegeben, was ich sagen und was ich verkünden soll.
And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Therefore, the things that I speak, just as the Father has said to me, so also do I speak.”50 Und ich weiß, sein Auftrag ist ewiges Leben. Was ich also verkünde, verkünde ich so, wie mir der Vater gesagt hat."
