1 From the Elder: greetings to my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in truth.	1 הַזָּקֵן אֶל־גָּיוֹס הֶחָבִיב אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי אֹהֵב אֹתוֹ בֶּאֱמֶת
2 My dear friend, I hope everything is going happily with you and that you are as well physical y as youare spiritual y.	2 חֲבִיבִי חֶפְצִי הוּא כִּי יִיטַב לְךָ בְּכָל־דָּבָר וְתֶחֱזָק כַּאֲשֶׁר־טוֹב לְךָ בְּנַפְשֶׁךָ
3 It was a great joy to me when some brothers came and told of your faithfulness to the truth, and of yourlife in the truth.	3 כִּי שָׂמַחְתִּי לִמְאֹד כַּאֲשֶׁר בָּאוּ אַחִים וַיָּעִידוּ עַל־אֲמִתֶּךָ אֲשֶׁר מִתְהַלֵּךְ בָּאֱמֶת אָתָּה
4 It is always my greatest joy to hear that my children are living according to the truth.	4 אֵין לִי שִׂמְחָה גְדוֹלָה מִלִּשְׁמֹעַ אֶת־אֲשֶׁר בָּנַי יִתְהַלְּכוּ בָּאֱמֶת
5 My dear friend, you have done loyal work in helping these brothers, even though they were strangers toyou.	5 חֲבִיבִי בֶּאֱמוּנָה כָּל־מַעֲשֶׂיךָ עִם־הָאַחִים וְעִם־הָאֹרְחִים
6 They are a proof to the whole Church of your love and it would be a kindness if you could help them ontheir journey as God would approve.	6 אֲשֶׁר הֵעִידוּ עַל־אַהֲבָתְךָ בִּפְנֵי הַקָּהָל וְאַף תֵּיטִיב לַעֲשׂוֹת בְּלַוֹּתְךָ אֹתָם כַּאֲשֶׁר יָאֲתָה לִפְנֵי אֱלֹהִים
7 It was entirely for the sake of the name that they set out, without depending on the non-believers foranything:	7 כִּי בַּעֲבוּר שְׁמוֹ יָצָאוּ וְלֹא לָקְחוּ מְאוּמָה מִן־הַגּוֹיִם
8 it is our duty to welcome people of this sort and contribute our share to their work for the truth.	8 עַל־כֵּן חַיָּבִים אֲנַחְנוּ לְקַבֵּל אֹתָם לְמַעַן נִהְיֶה עֹזְרִים לָאֱמֶת
9 I have written a note for the members of the church, but Diotrephes, who enjoys being in charge of it,refuses to accept us.	9 אֲנִי כָתַבְתִּי אֶל־הַקְּהִלָּה אַךְ דִּיּוֹטְרִיפַס הַמִּתְאַוֶּה לִהְיוֹת עֲלֵיהֶם לְרֹאשׁ אֵינֶנּוּ מְקַבֵּל אֹתָנוּ
10 So if I come, I shal tel everyone how he has behaved, and about the wicked accusations he has beencirculating against us. As if that were not enough, he not only refuses to welcome our brothers, but prevents fromdoing so other people who would have liked to, and expels them from the church.	10 עַל־כֵּן בְּבֹאִי אַזְכִּיר אֶת־מַעֲשָׂיו אֲשֶׁר הוּא עֹשֶׂה בְּסַפְּרוֹ עָלֵינוּ דְּבָרִים רָעִים וְלֹא דַיּוֹ שֶׁלֹּא יְקַבֵּל אֶת־הָאַחִים כִּי גַם־יִמְנַע אֶת־הַחֲפֵצִים לְקַבֵּל וַיְגָרְשֵׁם מִתּוֹךְ הַקְּהִלָּה
11 My dear friend, never fol ow a bad example, but keep fol owing the good one; whoever does what isright is from God, but no one who does what is wrong has ever seen God.	11 חֲבִיבִי אַל־תִּרְדֹּף הָרָעָה כִּי אִם־הַטּוֹב הָעֹשֶׂה טוֹב הוּא מֵאֱלֹהִים וְהָעֹשֶׂה רַע לֹא רָאָה אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים
12 Demetrius has been approved by everyone, and indeed by Truth itself. We too wil vouch for him andyou know that our testimony is true.	12 עַל־דִּימֶטְרִיּוֹס הֵעִידוּ הַכֹּל וְגַם־הָאֱמֶת עַצְמָהּ וְגַם־אֲנַחְנוּ מְעִידִים עָלָיו וִידַעְתֶּם כִּי עֵדוּתֵנוּ הִיא נֶאֱמָנָה
13 There were several things I had to tel you but I would rather not trust them to pen and ink.	13 הַרְבֵּה־לִי לִכְתֹּב וְלֹא חָפַצְתִּי לִכְתֹּב אֵלֶיךָ בִּדְיוֹ וּבְקָנֶה
14 However, I hope to see you soon and talk to you in person.	14 אֲבָל אֲקַוֶּה לִרְאוֹתְךָ בִּמְהֵרָה וּפֶה אֶל־פֶּה נְדַבֵּר שָׁלוֹם לָךְ הָרֵעִים שֹׁאֲלִים לִשְׁלוֹמֶךָ שְׁאַל לִשְׁלוֹם הָרֵעִים לְאִישׁ אִישׁ בִּשְׁמוֹ
15 Peace be with you; greetings from your friends; greet each of our friends by name.
