3 John 1

1 From the Elder: greetings to my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in truth.	1 The Elder, to Gaius, most beloved, whom I love in the truth.
2 My dear friend, I hope everything is going happily with you and that you are as well physical y as youare spiritual y.	2 Most beloved, concerning everything, I make it my prayer that you may benefit by advancing and succeeding in whatever may be to the benefit of your soul.
3 It was a great joy to me when some brothers came and told of your faithfulness to the truth, and of yourlife in the truth.	3 I was very glad when the brothers arrived, and when they offered testimony to the truth in you, that you are walking in the truth.
4 It is always my greatest joy to hear that my children are living according to the truth.	4 I have no greater grace than this, when I hear that my sons are walking in the truth.
5 My dear friend, you have done loyal work in helping these brothers, even though they were strangers toyou.	5 Most beloved, you should act faithfully in whatever you do for the brothers, and those who are sojourners;
6 They are a proof to the whole Church of your love and it would be a kindness if you could help them ontheir journey as God would approve.	6 they have given testimony to your charity in the sight of the Church. You would to well to lead these ones worthily to God.
7 It was entirely for the sake of the name that they set out, without depending on the non-believers foranything:	7 For they set out, on behalf of his name, accepting nothing from the unbelievers.
8 it is our duty to welcome people of this sort and contribute our share to their work for the truth.	8 Therefore, we must accept such as these, in order that we may cooperate with the truth.
9 I have written a note for the members of the church, but Diotrephes, who enjoys being in charge of it,refuses to accept us.	9 As it happens, I had written to the church. But Diotrephes, who loves to bear the highest rank among them, would not accept us.
10 So if I come, I shal tel everyone how he has behaved, and about the wicked accusations he has beencirculating against us. As if that were not enough, he not only refuses to welcome our brothers, but prevents fromdoing so other people who would have liked to, and expels them from the church.	10 Because of this, when I come, I will admonish his works which he does, babbling against us with malicious words. And as if this were not sufficient for him, he himself does not receive the brothers. And those who do receive them, he hinders, and he ejects them from the church.
11 My dear friend, never fol ow a bad example, but keep fol owing the good one; whoever does what isright is from God, but no one who does what is wrong has ever seen God.	11 Most beloved, do not be willing to imitate what is evil; instead imitate what is good. Whoever does good is of God. Whoever does evil has not seen God.
12 Demetrius has been approved by everyone, and indeed by Truth itself. We too wil vouch for him andyou know that our testimony is true.	12 Testimony is being given for Demetrius by everyone, and by the truth itself. And we also offer testimony. And you know that our testimony is true.
13 There were several things I had to tel you but I would rather not trust them to pen and ink.	13 I had many things to write to you, but I am not willing, through ink and pen, to write to you.
14 However, I hope to see you soon and talk to you in person.	14 Yet I hope to see you soon, and then we will speak face to face. Peace to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.
15 Peace be with you; greetings from your friends; greet each of our friends by name.
