NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you therefore to lead a life worthy of the vocation to which you werecal ed.1 Obsecro itaque vos ego vinctus in Domino, ut digne ambuletis vocatione, qua vocati estis,
With al humility and gentleness, and with patience, support each other in love.2 cum omni humilitate, et mansuetudine, cum patientia, supportantes invicem in caritate,
Take every care to preserve the unity of the Spirit by the peace that binds you together.3 solliciti servare unitatem Spiritus in vinculo pacis.
There is one Body, one Spirit, just as one hope is the goal of your calling by God.4 Unum corpus, et unus Spiritus, sicut vocati estis in una spe vocationis vestræ.
There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism,5 Unus Dominus, una fides, unum baptisma.
and one God and Father of al , over al , through al and within al .6 Unus Deus et Pater omnium, qui est super omnes, et per omnia, et in omnibus nobis.
On each one of us God's favour has been bestowed in whatever way Christ al otted it.7 Unicuique autem nostrum data est gratia secundum mensuram donationis Christi.
That is why it says: He went up to the heights, took captives, he gave gifts to humanity.8 Propter quod dicit : Ascendens in altum, captivam duxit captivitatem : dedit dona hominibus.
When it says, 'he went up', it must mean that he had gone down to the deepest levels of the earth.9 Quod autem ascendit, quid est, nisi quia et descendit primum in inferiores partes terræ ?
The one who went down is none other than the one who went up above al the heavens to fil allthings.10 Qui descendit, ipse est et qui ascendit super omnes cælos, ut impleret omnia.
And to some, his 'gift' was that they should be apostles; to some prophets; to some, evangelists; tosome, pastors and teachers;11 Et ipse dedit quosdam quidem apostolos, quosdam autem prophetas, alios vero evangelistas, alios autem pastores et doctores,
to knit God's holy people together for the work of service to build up the Body of Christ,12 ad consummationem sanctorum in opus ministerii, in ædificationem corporis Christi :
until we al reach unity in faith and knowledge of the Son of God and form the perfect Man, fullymature with the ful ness of Christ himself.13 donec occurramus omnes in unitatem fidei, et agnitionis Filii Dei, in virum perfectum, in mensuram ætatis plenitudinis Christi :
Then we shal no longer be children, or tossed one way and another, and carried hither and thither byevery new gust of teaching, at the mercy of all the tricks people play and their unscrupulousness in deliberatedeception.14 ut jam non simus parvuli fluctuantes, et circumferamur omni vento doctrinæ in nequitia hominum, in astutia ad circumventionem erroris.
If we live by the truth and in love, we shal grow completely into Christ, who is the head15 Veritatem autem facientes in caritate, crescamus in illo per omnia, qui est caput Christus :
by whom the whole Body is fitted and joined together, every joint adding its own strength, for eachindividual part to work according to its function. So the body grows until it has built itself up in love.16 ex quo totum corpus compactum et connexum per omnem juncturam subministrationis, secundum operationem in mensuram uniuscujusque membri, augmentum corporis facit in ædificationem sui in caritate.
So this I say to you and attest to you in the Lord, do not go on living the empty-headed life that thegentiles live.17 Hoc igitur dico, et testificor in Domino, ut jam non ambuletis, sicut et gentes ambulant in vanitate sensus sui,
Intel ectual y they are in the dark, and they are estranged from the life of God, because of theignorance which is the consequence of closed minds.18 tenebris obscuratum habentes intellectum, alienati a vita Dei per ignorantiam, quæ est in illis, propter cæcitatem cordis ipsorum,
Their sense of right and wrong once dul ed, they have abandoned all self-control and pursue to excessevery kind of uncleanness.19 qui desperantes, semetipsos tradiderunt impudicitiæ, in operationem immunditiæ omnis in avaritiam.
Now that is hardly the way you have learnt Christ,20 Vos autem non ita didicistis Christum,
unless you failed to hear him properly when you were taught what the truth is in Jesus.21 si tamen illum audistis, et in ipso edocti estis, sicut est veritas in Jesu,
You were to put aside your old self, which belongs to your old way of life and is corrupted by followingil usory desires.22 deponere vos secundum pristinam conversationem veterem hominem, qui corrumpitur secundum desideria erroris.
Your mind was to be renewed in spirit23 Renovamini autem spiritu mentis vestræ,
so that you could put on the New Man that has been created on God's principles, in the uprightnessand holiness of the truth.24 et induite novum hominem, qui secundum Deum creatus est in justitia, et sanctitate veritatis.
So from now on, there must be no more lies. Speak the truth to one another, since we are al parts ofone another.25 Propter quod deponentes mendacium, loquimini veritatem unusquisque cum proximo suo : quoniam sumus invicem membra.
Even if you are angry, do not sin: never let the sun set on your anger26 Irascimini, et nolite peccare : sol non occidat super iracundiam vestram.
or else you wil give the devil a foothold.27 Nolite locum dare diabolo :
Anyone who was a thief must stop stealing; instead he should exert himself at some honest job withhis own hands so that he may have something to share with those in need.28 qui furabatur, jam non furetur : magis autem laboret, operando manibus suis, quod bonum est, ut habeat unde tribuat necessitatem patienti.
No foul word should ever cross your lips; let your words be for the improvement of others, as occasionoffers, and do good to your listeners;29 Omnis sermo malus ex ore vestro non procedat : sed si quis bonus ad ædificationem fidei ut det gratiam audientibus.
do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God who has marked you with his seal, ready for the day when weshall be set free.30 Et nolite contristare Spiritum Sanctum Dei : in quo signati estis in diem redemptionis.
Any bitterness or bad temper or anger or shouting or abuse must be far removed from you -- as mustevery kind of malice.31 Omnis amaritudo, et ira, et indignatio, et clamor, et blasphemia tollatur a vobis cum omni malitia.
Be generous to one another, sympathetic, forgiving each other as readily as God forgave you inChrist.32 Estote autem invicem benigni, misericordes, donantes invicem sicut et Deus in Christo donavit vobis.
