I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you therefore to lead a life worthy of the vocation to which you werecal ed.1 I therefore, a prisoner in the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation in which you are called,
With al humility and gentleness, and with patience, support each other in love.2 With all humility and mildness, with patience, supporting one another in charity.
Take every care to preserve the unity of the Spirit by the peace that binds you together.3 Careful to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
There is one Body, one Spirit, just as one hope is the goal of your calling by God.4 One body and one Spirit; as you are called in one hope of your calling.
There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism,5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism.
and one God and Father of al , over al , through al and within al .6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in us all.
On each one of us God's favour has been bestowed in whatever way Christ al otted it.7 But to every one of us is given grace, according to the measure of the giving of Christ.
That is why it says: He went up to the heights, took captives, he gave gifts to humanity.8 Wherefore he saith: Ascending on high, he led captivity captive; he gave gifts to men.
When it says, 'he went up', it must mean that he had gone down to the deepest levels of the earth.9 Now that he ascended, what is it, but because he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
The one who went down is none other than the one who went up above al the heavens to fil allthings.10 He that descended is the same also that ascended above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.
And to some, his 'gift' was that they should be apostles; to some prophets; to some, evangelists; tosome, pastors and teachers;11 And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and other some evangelists, and other some pastors and doctors,
to knit God's holy people together for the work of service to build up the Body of Christ,12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
until we al reach unity in faith and knowledge of the Son of God and form the perfect Man, fullymature with the ful ness of Christ himself.13 Until we all meet into the unity of faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the age of the fulness of Christ;
Then we shal no longer be children, or tossed one way and another, and carried hither and thither byevery new gust of teaching, at the mercy of all the tricks people play and their unscrupulousness in deliberatedeception.14 That henceforth we be no more children tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine by the wickedness of men, by cunning craftiness, by which they lie in wait to deceive
If we live by the truth and in love, we shal grow completely into Christ, who is the head15 But doing the truth in charity, we may in all things grow up in him who is the head, even Christ:
by whom the whole Body is fitted and joined together, every joint adding its own strength, for eachindividual part to work according to its function. So the body grows until it has built itself up in love.16 From whom the whole body, being compacted and fitly joined together, by what every joint supplieth, according to the operation in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body, unto the edifying of itself in charity.
So this I say to you and attest to you in the Lord, do not go on living the empty-headed life that thegentiles live.17 This then I say and testify in the Lord: That henceforward you walk not as also the Gentiles walk in the vanity of their mind,
Intel ectual y they are in the dark, and they are estranged from the life of God, because of theignorance which is the consequence of closed minds.18 Having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their hearts.
Their sense of right and wrong once dul ed, they have abandoned all self-control and pursue to excessevery kind of uncleanness.19 Who despairing, have given themselves up to lasciviousness, unto the working of all uncleanness, unto the working of all uncleanness, unto covetousness.
Now that is hardly the way you have learnt Christ,20 But you have not so learned Christ;
unless you failed to hear him properly when you were taught what the truth is in Jesus.21 If so be that you have heard him, and have been taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus:
You were to put aside your old self, which belongs to your old way of life and is corrupted by followingil usory desires.22 To put off, according to former conversation, the old man, who is corrupted according to the desire of error.
Your mind was to be renewed in spirit23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind:
so that you could put on the New Man that has been created on God's principles, in the uprightnessand holiness of the truth.24 And put on the new man, who according to God is created in justice and holiness of truth.
So from now on, there must be no more lies. Speak the truth to one another, since we are al parts ofone another.25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak ;ye the truth every man with his neighbour; for we are members one of another.
Even if you are angry, do not sin: never let the sun set on your anger26 Be angry, and sin not. Let not the sun go down upon your anger.
or else you wil give the devil a foothold.27 Give not place to the devil.
Anyone who was a thief must stop stealing; instead he should exert himself at some honest job withhis own hands so that he may have something to share with those in need.28 He that stole, let him now steal no more; but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have something to give to him that suffereth need.
No foul word should ever cross your lips; let your words be for the improvement of others, as occasionoffers, and do good to your listeners;29 Let no evil speech proceed from your mouth; but that which is good, to the edification of faith, that it may administer grace to the hearers.
do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God who has marked you with his seal, ready for the day when weshall be set free.30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God: whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Any bitterness or bad temper or anger or shouting or abuse must be far removed from you -- as mustevery kind of malice.31 Let all bitterness, and anger, and indignation, and clamour, and blasphemy, be put away from you, with all malice.
Be generous to one another, sympathetic, forgiving each other as readily as God forgave you inChrist.32 And be ye kind one to another; merciful, forgiving one another, even as God hath forgiven you in Christ.
