I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you therefore to lead a life worthy of the vocation to which you werecal ed.1 And so, as a prisoner in the Lord, I beg you to walk in a manner worthy of the vocation to which you have been called:
With al humility and gentleness, and with patience, support each other in love.2 with all humility and meekness, with patience, supporting one another in charity.
Take every care to preserve the unity of the Spirit by the peace that binds you together.3 Be anxious to preserve the unity of the Spirit within the bonds of peace.
There is one Body, one Spirit, just as one hope is the goal of your calling by God.4 One body and one Spirit: to this you have been called by the one hope of your calling:
There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism,5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
and one God and Father of al , over al , through al and within al .6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all.
On each one of us God's favour has been bestowed in whatever way Christ al otted it.7 Yet to each one of us there has been given grace according to the measure allotted by Christ.
That is why it says: He went up to the heights, took captives, he gave gifts to humanity.8 Because of this, he says: “Ascending on high, he took captivity itself captive; he gave gifts to men.”
When it says, 'he went up', it must mean that he had gone down to the deepest levels of the earth.9 Now that he has ascended, what is left except for him also to descended, first to the lower parts of the earth?
The one who went down is none other than the one who went up above al the heavens to fil allthings.10 He who descended is the same one who also ascended above all the heavens, so that he might fulfill everything.
And to some, his 'gift' was that they should be apostles; to some prophets; to some, evangelists; tosome, pastors and teachers;11 And the same one granted that some would be Apostles, and some Prophets, yet truly others evangelists, and others pastors and teachers,
to knit God's holy people together for the work of service to build up the Body of Christ,12 for the sake of the perfection of the saints, by the work of the ministry, in the edification of the body of Christ,
until we al reach unity in faith and knowledge of the Son of God and form the perfect Man, fullymature with the ful ness of Christ himself.13 until we all meet in the unity of faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as a perfect man, in the measure of the age of the fullness of Christ.
Then we shal no longer be children, or tossed one way and another, and carried hither and thither byevery new gust of teaching, at the mercy of all the tricks people play and their unscrupulousness in deliberatedeception.14 So may we then no longer be little children, disturbed and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the wickedness of men, and by the craftiness which deceives unto error.
If we live by the truth and in love, we shal grow completely into Christ, who is the head15 Instead, acting according to truth in charity, we should increase in everything, in him who is the head, Christ himself.
by whom the whole Body is fitted and joined together, every joint adding its own strength, for eachindividual part to work according to its function. So the body grows until it has built itself up in love.16 For in him, the whole body is joined closely together, by every underlying joint, through the function allotted to each part, bringing improvement to the body, toward its edification in charity.
So this I say to you and attest to you in the Lord, do not go on living the empty-headed life that thegentiles live.17 And so, I say this, and I testify in the Lord: that from now on you should walk, not as the Gentiles also walk, in the vanity of their mind,
Intel ectual y they are in the dark, and they are estranged from the life of God, because of theignorance which is the consequence of closed minds.18 having their intellect obscured, being alienated from the life of God, through the ignorance that is within them, because of the blindness of their hearts.
Their sense of right and wrong once dul ed, they have abandoned all self-control and pursue to excessevery kind of uncleanness.19 Such as these, despairing, have given themselves over to sexual immorality, carrying out every impurity with rapacity.
Now that is hardly the way you have learnt Christ,20 But this is not what you have learned in Christ.
unless you failed to hear him properly when you were taught what the truth is in Jesus.21 For certainly, you have listened to him, and you have been instructed in him, according to the truth that is in Jesus:
You were to put aside your old self, which belongs to your old way of life and is corrupted by followingil usory desires.22 to set aside your earlier behavior, the former man, who was corrupted, by means of desire, unto error,
Your mind was to be renewed in spirit23 and so be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
so that you could put on the New Man that has been created on God's principles, in the uprightnessand holiness of the truth.24 and so put on the new man, who, in accord with God, is created in justice and in the holiness of truth.
So from now on, there must be no more lies. Speak the truth to one another, since we are al parts ofone another.25 Because of this, setting aside lying, speak the truth, each one with his neighbor. For we are all part of one another.
Even if you are angry, do not sin: never let the sun set on your anger26 “Be angry, but do not be willing to sin.” Do not let the sun set over your anger.
or else you wil give the devil a foothold.27 Provide no place for the devil.
Anyone who was a thief must stop stealing; instead he should exert himself at some honest job withhis own hands so that he may have something to share with those in need.28 Whoever was stealing, let him now not steal, but rather let him labor, working with his hands, doing what is good, so that he may have something to distribute to those who suffer need.
No foul word should ever cross your lips; let your words be for the improvement of others, as occasionoffers, and do good to your listeners;29 Let no evil words proceed from your mouth, but only what is good, toward the edification of faith, so as to bestow grace upon those who listen.
do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God who has marked you with his seal, ready for the day when weshall be set free.30 And do not be willing to grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you have been sealed, unto the day of redemption.
Any bitterness or bad temper or anger or shouting or abuse must be far removed from you -- as mustevery kind of malice.31 Let all bitterness and anger and indignation and outcry and blasphemy be taken away from you, along with all malice.
Be generous to one another, sympathetic, forgiving each other as readily as God forgave you inChrist.32 And be kind and merciful to one another, forgiving one another, just as God has forgiven you in Christ.
