Acts of the Apostles 20

NEW JERUSALEM	VULGATA
1 When the disturbance was over, Paul sent for the disciples and, after speaking words ofencouragement to them, said good -- bye and set out for Macedonia.	1 Postquam autem cessavit tumultus, vocatis Paulus discipulis, et exhortatus eos, valedixit, et profectus est ut iret in Macedoniam.
2 On his way through those areas he said many words of encouragement to them and then made hisway into Greece,	2 Cum autem perambulasset partes illas, et exhortatus eos fuisset multo sermone, venit ad Græciam :
3 where he spent three months. He was leaving by ship for Syria when a plot organised against him bythe Jews made him decide to go back by way of Macedonia.	3 ubi cum fecisset menses tres, factæ sunt illi insidiæ a Judæis navigaturo in Syriam : habuitque consilium ut reverteretur per Macedoniam.
4 He was accompanied by Sopater, son of Pyrrhus, who came from Beroea; Aristarchus and Secunduswho came from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy, as well as Tychicus and Trophimus who werefrom Asia.	4 Comitatus est autem eum Sopater Pyrrhi Berœensis, Thessalonicensium vero Aristarchus, et Secundus, et Gajus Derbeus, et Timotheus : Asiani vero Tychicus et Trophimus.
5 They al went on to Troas where they waited for us.	5 Hi cum præcessissent, sustinuerunt nos Troade :
6 We ourselves left Philippi by ship after the days of Unleavened Bread and joined them five days later atTroas, where we stayed for a week.	6 nos vero navigavimus post dies azymorum a Philippis, et venimus ad eos Troadem in diebus quinque, ubi demorati sumus diebus septem.
7 On the first day of the week we met for the breaking of bread. Paul was due to leave the next day, andhe preached a sermon that went on til the middle of the night.	7 Una autem sabbati cum convenissemus ad frangendum panem, Paulus disputabat cum eis profecturus in crastinum, protraxitque sermonem usque in mediam noctem.
8 A number of lamps were lit in the upstairs room where we were assembled,	8 Erant autem lampades copiosæ in cœnaculo, ubi eramus congregati.
9 and as Paul went on and on, a young man called Eutychus who was sitting on the window-sil grewdrowsy and was overcome by sleep and fel to the ground three floors below. He was picked up dead.	9 Sedens autem quidam adolescens nomine Eutychus super fenestram, cum mergeretur somno gravi, disputante diu Paulo, ductus somno cecidit de tertio cœnaculo deorsum, et sublatus est mortuus.
10 Paul went down and stooped to clasp the boy to him, saying, 'There is no need to worry, there is stillife in him.'	10 Ad quem cum descendisset Paulus, incubuit super eum : et complexus dixit : Nolite turbari, anima enim ipsius in ipso est.
11 Then he went back upstairs where he broke the bread and ate and carried on talking til he left atdaybreak.	11 Ascendens autem, frangensque panem, et gustans, satisque allocutus usque in lucem, sic profectus est.
12 They took the boy away alive, and were greatly encouraged.	12 Adduxerunt autem puerum viventem, et consolati sunt non minime.
13 We were now to go on ahead by sea, so we set sail for Assos, where we were to take Paul on board;this was what he had arranged, for he wanted to go overland.	13 Nos autem ascendentes navem, navigavimus in Asson, inde suscepturi Paulum : sic enim disposuerat ipse per terram iter facturus.
14 When he rejoined us at Assos we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene.	14 Cum autem convenisset nos in Asson, assumpto eo, venimus Mitylenen.
15 The next day we sailed from there and arrived opposite Chios. The second day we touched at Samosand, after stopping at Trogyllium, made Miletus the next day.	15 Et inde navigantes, sequenti die venimus contra Chium, et alia applicuimus Samum, et sequenti die venimus Miletum.
16 Paul had decided to pass wide of Ephesus so as to avoid spending time in Asia, since he wasanxious to be in Jerusalem, if possible, for the day of Pentecost.	16 Proposuerat enim Paulus transnavigare Ephesum, ne qua mora illi fieret in Asia. Festinabat enim, si possibile sibi esset, ut diem Pentecostes faceret Jerosolymis.
17 From Miletus he sent for the elders of the church of Ephesus.	17 A Mileto autem mittens Ephesum, vocavit majores natu ecclesiæ.
18 When they arrived he addressed these words to them: 'You know what my way of life has been eversince the first day I set foot among you in Asia,	18 Qui cum venissent ad eum, et simul essent, dixit eis : Vos scitis a prima die qua ingressus sum in Asiam, qualiter vobiscum per omne tempus fuerim,
19 how I have served the Lord in al humility, with al the sorrows and trials that came to me through theplots of the Jews.	19 serviens Domino cum omni humilitate, et lacrimis, et tentationibus, quæ mihi acciderunt ex insidiis Judæorum :
20 I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to you; I have preached to you and instructedyou both in public and in your homes,	20 quomodo nihil subtraxerim utilium, quominus annuntiarem vobis et docerem vos, publice et per domos,
21 urging both Jews and Greeks to turn to God and to believe in our Lord Jesus.	21 testificans Judæis atque gentilibus in Deum pœnitentiam, et fidem in Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum.
22 'And now you see me on my way to Jerusalem in captivity to the Spirit; I have no idea what wilhappen to me there,	22 Et nunc ecce alligatus ego spiritu, vado in Jerusalem : quæ in ea ventura sint mihi, ignorans :
23 except that the Holy Spirit, in town after town, has made it clear to me that imprisonment andpersecution await me.	23 nisi quod Spiritus Sanctus per omnes civitates mihi protestatur, dicens quoniam vincula et tribulationes Jerosolymis me manent.
24 But I do not place any value on my own life, provided that I complete the mission the Lord Jesus gaveme -- to bear witness to the good news of God's grace.	24 Sed nihil horum vereor : nec facio animam meam pretiosiorem quam me, dummodo consummem cursum meum, et ministerium verbi quod accepi a Domino Jesu, testificari Evangelium gratiæ Dei.
25 'I now feel sure that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom wil eversee my face again.	25 Et nunc ecce ego scio quia amplius non videbitis faciem meam vos omnes, per quos transivi prædicans regnum Dei.
26 And so on this very day I swear that my conscience is clear as far as all of you are concerned,	26 Quapropter contestor vos hodierna die, quia mundus sum a sanguine omnium.
27 for I have without faltering put before you the whole of God's purpose.	27 Non enim subterfugi, quominus annuntiarem omne consilium Dei vobis.
28 'Be on your guard for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you theguardians, to feed the Church of God which he bought with the blood of his own Son.	28 Attendite vobis, et universo gregi, in quo vos Spiritus Sanctus posuit episcopos regere ecclesiam Dei, quam acquisivit sanguine suo.
29 'I know quite wel that when I have gone fierce wolves wil invade you and will have no mercy on theflock.	29 Ego scio quoniam intrabunt post discessionem meam lupi rapaces in vos, non parcentes gregi.
30 Even from your own ranks there wil be men coming forward with a travesty of the truth on their lips toinduce the disciples to fol ow them.	30 Et ex vobisipsis exsurgent viri loquentes perversa, ut abducant discipulos post se.
31 So be on your guard, remembering how night and day for three years I never slackened in counsel ingeach one of you with tears.	31 Propter quod vigilate, memoria retinentes quoniam per triennium nocte et die non cessavi, cum lacrimis monens unumquemque vestrum.
32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace that has power to build you up and togive you your inheritance among all the sanctified.	32 Et nunc commendo vos Deo, et verbo gratiæ ipsius, qui potens est ædificare, et dare hæreditatem in sanctificatis omnibus.
33 'I have never asked anyone for money or clothes;	33 Argentum, et aurum, aut vestem nullius concupivi, sicut
34 you know for yourselves that these hands of mine earned enough to meet my needs and those of mycompanions.	34 ipsi scitis : quoniam ad ea quæ mihi opus erant, et his qui mecum sunt, ministraverunt manus istæ.
35 By every means I have shown you that we must exert ourselves in this way to support the weak,remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, who himself said, "There is more happiness in giving than inreceiving." '	35 Omnia ostendi vobis, quoniam sic laborantes, oportet suscipere infirmos ac meminisse verbi Domini Jesu : quoniam ipse dixit : Beatius est magis dare, quam accipere.
36 When he had finished speaking he knelt down with them all and prayed.	36 Et cum hæc dixisset, positis genibus suis oravit cum omnibus illis.
37 By now they were all in tears; they put their arms round Paul's neck and kissed him;	37 Magnus autem fletus factus est omnium : et procumbentes super collum Pauli, osculabantur eum,
38 what saddened them most was his saying they would never see his face again. Then they escortedhim to the ship.	38 dolentes maxime in verbo quod dixerat, quoniam amplius faciem ejus non essent visuri. Et deducebant eum ad navem.
