Acts of the Apostles 20

1 When the disturbance was over, Paul sent for the disciples and, after speaking words ofencouragement to them, said good -- bye and set out for Macedonia.	1 Postquam autem cessavit tumultus, accersitis Paulus discipulis etexhortatus eos, valedixit et profectus est, ut iret in Macedoniam.
2 On his way through those areas he said many words of encouragement to them and then made hisway into Greece,	2 Cum autemperambulasset partes illas et exhortatus eos fuisset multo sermone, venit adGraeciam;
3 where he spent three months. He was leaving by ship for Syria when a plot organised against him bythe Jews made him decide to go back by way of Macedonia.	3 cumque fecisset menses tres, factae sunt illi insidiae a Iudaeisnavigaturo in Syriam, habuitque consilium, ut reverteretur per Macedoniam.
4 He was accompanied by Sopater, son of Pyrrhus, who came from Beroea; Aristarchus and Secunduswho came from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy, as well as Tychicus and Trophimus who werefrom Asia.	4 Comitabatur autem eum Sopater Pyrrhi Beroeensis, Thessalonicensium veroAristarchus et Secundus et Gaius Derbeus et Timotheus, Asiani vero Tychicus etTrophimus.
5 They al went on to Troas where they waited for us.	5 Hi cum praecessissent, sustinebant nos Troade;
6 We ourselves left Philippi by ship after the days of Unleavened Bread and joined them five days later atTroas, where we stayed for a week.	6 nos veronavigavimus post dies Azymorum a Philippis et venimus ad eos Troadem in diebusquinque, ubi demorati sumus diebus septem.
7 On the first day of the week we met for the breaking of bread. Paul was due to leave the next day, andhe preached a sermon that went on til the middle of the night.	7 In una autem sabbatorum, cum convenissemus ad frangendum panem, Paulusdisputabat eis, profecturus in crastinum, protraxitque sermonem usque in mediamnoctem.
8 A number of lamps were lit in the upstairs room where we were assembled,	8 Erant autem lampades copiosae in cenaculo, ubi eramus congregati;
9 and as Paul went on and on, a young man called Eutychus who was sitting on the window-sil grewdrowsy and was overcome by sleep and fel to the ground three floors below. He was picked up dead.	9 sedens autem quidam adulescens nomine Eutychus super fenestram, cum mergeretursomno gravi, disputante diutius Paulo, eductus somno cecidit de tertio cenaculodeorsum et sublatus est mortuus.
10 Paul went down and stooped to clasp the boy to him, saying, 'There is no need to worry, there is stillife in him.'	10 Cum descendisset autem Paulus, incubuitsuper eum et complexus dixit: “ Nolite turbari, anima enim ipsius in eo est!”.
11 Then he went back upstairs where he broke the bread and ate and carried on talking til he left atdaybreak.	11 Ascendens autem frangensque panem et gustans satisque allocutus usque inlucem, sic profectus est.
12 They took the boy away alive, and were greatly encouraged.	12 Adduxerunt autem puerum viventem et consolati suntnon minime.
13 We were now to go on ahead by sea, so we set sail for Assos, where we were to take Paul on board;this was what he had arranged, for he wanted to go overland.	13 Nos autem praecedentes navi enavigavimus in Asson, inde suscepturi Paulum;sic enim disposuerat volens ipse per terram iter facere.
14 When he rejoined us at Assos we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene.	14 Cum autemconvenisset nos in Asson, assumpto eo, venimus Mitylenen
15 The next day we sailed from there and arrived opposite Chios. The second day we touched at Samosand, after stopping at Trogyllium, made Miletus the next day.	15 et inde navigantessequenti die pervenimus contra Chium et alia applicuimus Samum et sequentivenimus Miletum.
16 Paul had decided to pass wide of Ephesus so as to avoid spending time in Asia, since he wasanxious to be in Jerusalem, if possible, for the day of Pentecost.	16 Proposuerat enim Paulus transnavigare Ephesum, ne qua morailli fieret in Asia; festinabat enim, si possibile sibi esset, ut diemPentecosten faceret Hierosolymis.
17 From Miletus he sent for the elders of the church of Ephesus.	17 A Mileto autem mittens Ephesum convocavit presbyteros ecclesiae.
18 When they arrived he addressed these words to them: 'You know what my way of life has been eversince the first day I set foot among you in Asia,	18 Qui cumvenissent ad eum, dixit eis: “ Vos scitis a prima die, qua ingressus sum inAsiam, qualiter vobiscum per omne tempus fuerim,
19 how I have served the Lord in al humility, with al the sorrows and trials that came to me through theplots of the Jews.	19 serviens Domino cum omnihumilitate et lacrimis et tentationibus, quae mihi acciderunt in insidiisIudaeorum;
20 I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to you; I have preached to you and instructedyou both in public and in your homes,	20 quomodo nihil subtraxerim utilium, quominus annuntiarem vobis etdocerem vos publice et per domos,
21 urging both Jews and Greeks to turn to God and to believe in our Lord Jesus.	21 testificans Iudaeis atque Graecis in Deumpaenitentiam et fidem in Dominum nostrum Iesum.
22 'And now you see me on my way to Jerusalem in captivity to the Spirit; I have no idea what wilhappen to me there,	22 Et nunc ecce alligatus egoSpiritu vado in Ierusalem, quae in ea eventura sint mihi ignorans,
23 except that the Holy Spirit, in town after town, has made it clear to me that imprisonment andpersecution await me.	23 nisi quodSpiritus Sanctus per omnes civitates protestatur mihi dicens quoniam vincula ettribulationes me manent.
24 But I do not place any value on my own life, provided that I complete the mission the Lord Jesus gaveme -- to bear witness to the good news of God's grace.	24 Sed nihili facio animam meam pretiosam mihi, dummodoconsummem cursum meum et ministerium, quod accepi a Domino Iesu, testificarievangelium gratiae Dei.
25 'I now feel sure that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom wil eversee my face again.	25 Et nunc ecce ego scio quia amplius non videbitis faciem meam vos omnes, perquos transivi praedicans regnum;
26 And so on this very day I swear that my conscience is clear as far as all of you are concerned,	26 quapropter contestor vos hodierna die, quiamundus sum a sanguine omnium;
27 for I have without faltering put before you the whole of God's purpose.	27 non enim subterfugi, quominus annuntiarem omneconsilium Dei vobis.
28 'Be on your guard for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you theguardians, to feed the Church of God which he bought with the blood of his own Son.	28 Attendite vobis et universo gregi, in quo vos SpiritusSanctus posuit episcopos, pascere ecclesiam Dei, quam acquisivit sanguine suo.
29 'I know quite wel that when I have gone fierce wolves wil invade you and will have no mercy on theflock.	29 Ego scio quoniam intrabunt post discessionem meam lupi graves in vos nonparcentes gregi;
30 Even from your own ranks there wil be men coming forward with a travesty of the truth on their lips toinduce the disciples to fol ow them.	30 et ex vobis ipsis exsurgent viri loquentes perversa, utabstrahant discipulos post se.
31 So be on your guard, remembering how night and day for three years I never slackened in counsel ingeach one of you with tears.	31 Propter quod vigilate, memoria retinentesquoniam per triennium nocte et die non cessavi cum lacrimis monens unumquemquevestrum.
32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace that has power to build you up and togive you your inheritance among all the sanctified.	32 Et nunc commendo vos Deo et verbo gratiae ipsius, qui potens est aedificareet dare hereditatem in sanctificatis omnibus.
33 'I have never asked anyone for money or clothes;	33 Argentum aut aurum aut vestemnullius concupivi;
34 you know for yourselves that these hands of mine earned enough to meet my needs and those of mycompanions.	34 ipsi scitis quoniam ad ea, quae mihi opus erant et his,qui mecum sunt, ministraverunt manus istae.
35 By every means I have shown you that we must exert ourselves in this way to support the weak,remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, who himself said, "There is more happiness in giving than inreceiving." '	35 Omnia ostendi vobis quoniam siclaborantes oportet suscipere infirmos, ac meminisse verborum Domini Iesu,quoniam ipse dixit: “Beatius est magis dare quam accipere!” ”.
36 When he had finished speaking he knelt down with them all and prayed.	36 Et cum haec dixisset, positis genibus suis, cum omnibus illis oravit.
37 By now they were all in tears; they put their arms round Paul's neck and kissed him;	37 Magnus autem fletus factus est omnium; et procumbentes super collum Pauliosculabantur eum
38 what saddened them most was his saying they would never see his face again. Then they escortedhim to the ship.	38 dolentes maxime in verbo, quod dixerat, quoniam ampliusfaciem eius non essent visuri. Et deducebant eum ad navem.
