1 When the disturbance was over, Paul sent for the disciples and, after speaking words ofencouragement to them, said good -- bye and set out for Macedonia.	1 Dopo che fu cessato il tumulto, Paolo fece chiamare i discepoli, rivolse loro una esortazione, poi li salutò e partì per andare in Macedonia.
2 On his way through those areas he said many words of encouragement to them and then made hisway into Greece,	2 Percorse quella regione, facendo molti discorsi di esortazione, e giunse in Grecia.
3 where he spent three months. He was leaving by ship for Syria when a plot organised against him bythe Jews made him decide to go back by way of Macedonia.	3 Passati tre mesi, ci fu un complotto da parte dei Giudei, mentre stava per imbarcarsi per la Siria, che lo decise a ritornare passando per la Macedonia.
4 He was accompanied by Sopater, son of Pyrrhus, who came from Beroea; Aristarchus and Secunduswho came from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy, as well as Tychicus and Trophimus who werefrom Asia.	4 Lo accompagnarono fino in Asia Sòpatro, figlio di Pirro, di Berèa, Aristarco e Secondo di Tessalònica, Gaio di Derbe e Timoteo, Tìchico e Tròfimo, oriundi dell'Asia.
5 They al went on to Troas where they waited for us.	5 Costoro ci precedettero e ci aspettarono a Troade.
6 We ourselves left Philippi by ship after the days of Unleavened Bread and joined them five days later atTroas, where we stayed for a week.	6 Noi invece facemmo vela da Filippi dopo i giorni degli Azzimi e arrivammo presso di loro a Troade in cinque giorni, e là rimanemmo sette giorni.
7 On the first day of the week we met for the breaking of bread. Paul was due to leave the next day, andhe preached a sermon that went on til the middle of the night.	7 Il primo giorno della settimana eravamo radunati per spezzare il pane. Paolo, che doveva partire il giorno dopo, discorreva con essi e prolungò il discorso fino a mezzanotte.
8 A number of lamps were lit in the upstairs room where we were assembled,	8 Vi erano molte lampade al piano superiore, dove eravamo radunati.
9 and as Paul went on and on, a young man called Eutychus who was sitting on the window-sil grewdrowsy and was overcome by sleep and fel to the ground three floors below. He was picked up dead.	9 Ora, un ragazzo di nome Eutico, che se ne stava seduto sulla finestra, mentre Paolo continuava a parlare senza sosta, venne preso da una profonda sonnolenza e alla fine, vinto dal sonno, cadde dal terzo piano in terra e fu raccolto morto.
10 Paul went down and stooped to clasp the boy to him, saying, 'There is no need to worry, there is stillife in him.'	10 Allora Paolo scese, si buttò su di lui e abbracciandolo disse: "Non turbatevi, perché la sua anima è in lui".
11 Then he went back upstairs where he broke the bread and ate and carried on talking til he left atdaybreak.	11 Poi risalì, spezzò il pane e ne mangiò e, dopo aver parlato ancora a lungo fino all'alba, partì.
12 They took the boy away alive, and were greatly encouraged.	12 Intanto ricondussero il ragazzo vivo e ne provarono una indicibile consolazione.
13 We were now to go on ahead by sea, so we set sail for Assos, where we were to take Paul on board;this was what he had arranged, for he wanted to go overland.	13 Noi intanto, che già ci eravamo imbarcati, facemmo vela alla volta di Asso, dove avremmo dovuto riprendere Paolo: così infatti ci aveva ordinato, volendo egli fare il viaggio a piedi.
14 When he rejoined us at Assos we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene.	14 Quando ci raggiunse ad Asso, lo prendemmo a bordo con noi e arrivammo a Mitilène.
15 The next day we sailed from there and arrived opposite Chios. The second day we touched at Samosand, after stopping at Trogyllium, made Miletus the next day.	15 Di là salpammo e l'indomani giungemmo di fronte a Chio; il giorno dopo costeggiammo Samo e il seguente fummo a Milèto.
16 Paul had decided to pass wide of Ephesus so as to avoid spending time in Asia, since he wasanxious to be in Jerusalem, if possible, for the day of Pentecost.	16 Paolo infatti aveva ritenuto opportuno navigare al largo di Efeso, perché non gli capitasse di doversi attardare in Asia. Voleva affrettarsi per trovarsi, se possibile, nel giorno di Pentecoste a Gerusalemme.
17 From Miletus he sent for the elders of the church of Ephesus.	17 Da Milèto mandò dei messi a Efeso a chiamare gli anziani della chiesa.
18 When they arrived he addressed these words to them: 'You know what my way of life has been eversince the first day I set foot among you in Asia,	18 Quando giunsero presso di lui, disse loro: "Voi sapete come fin dal primo giorno in cui io arrivai nella provincia di Asia mi sono sempre comportato con voi,
19 how I have served the Lord in al humility, with al the sorrows and trials that came to me through theplots of the Jews.	19 servendo il Signore in ogni genere di umiliazione, nelle lacrime e tra le prove che le insidie dei Giudei mi hanno procurato.
20 I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to you; I have preached to you and instructedyou both in public and in your homes,	20 Non v'è nulla che vi potesse giovare che io abbia trascurato di predicare e insegnarvi in pubblico e nelle case.
21 urging both Jews and Greeks to turn to God and to believe in our Lord Jesus.	21 Ho scongiurato Giudei e Greci di convertirsi a Dio e di credere nel Signore nostro Gesù.
22 'And now you see me on my way to Jerusalem in captivity to the Spirit; I have no idea what wilhappen to me there,	22 Ora ecco che, avvinto dallo Spirito, sto andando a Gerusalemme, non sapendo ciò che colà mi potrà succedere.
23 except that the Holy Spirit, in town after town, has made it clear to me that imprisonment andpersecution await me.	23 Soltanto so che lo Spirito Santo di città in città mi avverte che mi attendono catene e tribolazioni.
24 But I do not place any value on my own life, provided that I complete the mission the Lord Jesus gaveme -- to bear witness to the good news of God's grace.	24 Ma non do alcun valore alla mia vita, purché io termini la mia corsa e il ministero che ho ricevuto dal Signore Gesù, di rendere testimonianza al vangelo della grazia di Dio.
25 'I now feel sure that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom wil eversee my face again.	25 Ora ecco, io so che voi non vedrete più il mio volto, voi tutti tra i quali io sono passato annunciando il regno.
26 And so on this very day I swear that my conscience is clear as far as all of you are concerned,	26 Perciò io vi attesto oggi che, se qualcuno si perdesse, la responsabilità non cadrà su di me.
27 for I have without faltering put before you the whole of God's purpose.	27 Mai infatti io mi sono sottratto dall'annunciarvi tutta intera la volontà di Dio.
28 'Be on your guard for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you theguardians, to feed the Church of God which he bought with the blood of his own Son.	28 Vegliate quindi su di voi stessi e su tutto il gregge in mezzo al quale lo Spirito Santo vi ha stabiliti come sorveglianti, per pascere la chiesa di Dio, che si è acquistata con il sangue del suo proprio Figlio.
29 'I know quite wel that when I have gone fierce wolves wil invade you and will have no mercy on theflock.	29 Io so che dopo la mia partenza si introdurranno in mezzo a voi lupi rapaci, che non risparmieranno il gregge.
30 Even from your own ranks there wil be men coming forward with a travesty of the truth on their lips toinduce the disciples to fol ow them.	30 Tra voi stessi sorgeranno individui che terranno discorsi perversi, per trascinare i discepoli dietro a loro.
31 So be on your guard, remembering how night and day for three years I never slackened in counsel ingeach one of you with tears.	31 Perciò vegliate, ricordandovi che per tre anni notte e giorno non ho cessato di ammonire, piangendo, ciascuno di voi.
32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace that has power to build you up and togive you your inheritance among all the sanctified.	32 Ora io vi affido a Dio e alla parola della sua grazia, che può edificare e dare l'eredità con tutti i santificati.
33 'I have never asked anyone for money or clothes;	33 Io non ho mai desiderato argento, oro o vesti di nessuno.
34 you know for yourselves that these hands of mine earned enough to meet my needs and those of mycompanions.	34 Voi sapete che alle mie necessità e a quelle di coloro che erano con me hanno provveduto queste mie mani.
35 By every means I have shown you that we must exert ourselves in this way to support the weak,remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, who himself said, "There is more happiness in giving than inreceiving." '	35 In ogni occasione io vi ho dimostrato che è così, lavorando, che occorre prendersi cura dei deboli, ricordandosi della parola del Signore Gesù che disse: "C'è più felicità a dare che a ricevere".
36 When he had finished speaking he knelt down with them all and prayed.	36 Dette queste cose, inginocchiatosi con tutti loro, pregò.
37 By now they were all in tears; they put their arms round Paul's neck and kissed him;	37 Tutti allora scoppiarono in pianto, e gettandosi al collo di Paolo lo coprivano di baci,
38 what saddened them most was his saying they would never see his face again. Then they escortedhim to the ship.	38 afflitti soprattutto per la parola che aveva detto, che non avrebbero più riveduto il suo volto. Poi lo accompagnarono fino alla nave.
