1 When the disturbance was over, Paul sent for the disciples and, after speaking words ofencouragement to them, said good -- bye and set out for Macedonia.	1 Cessato il tumulto, Paolo mandò a chiamare i discepoli e, dopo averli esortati, li salutò e si mise in viaggio per la Macedonia.
2 On his way through those areas he said many words of encouragement to them and then made hisway into Greece,	2 Dopo aver attraversato quelle regioni, esortando i discepoli con molti discorsi, arrivò in Grecia.
3 where he spent three months. He was leaving by ship for Syria when a plot organised against him bythe Jews made him decide to go back by way of Macedonia.	3 Trascorsi tre mesi, poiché ci fu un complotto dei Giudei contro di lui mentre si apprestava a salpare per la Siria, decise di fare ritorno attraverso la Macedonia.
4 He was accompanied by Sopater, son of Pyrrhus, who came from Beroea; Aristarchus and Secunduswho came from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy, as well as Tychicus and Trophimus who werefrom Asia.	4 Lo accompagnavano Sòpatro di Berea, figlio di Pirro, Aristarco e Secondo di Tessalònica, Gaio di Derbe e Timòteo, e gli asiatici Tìchico e Tròfimo.
5 They al went on to Troas where they waited for us.	5 Questi però, partiti prima di noi, ci attendevano a Tròade;
6 We ourselves left Philippi by ship after the days of Unleavened Bread and joined them five days later atTroas, where we stayed for a week.	6 noi invece salpammo da Filippi dopo i giorni degli Azzimi e li raggiungemmo in capo a cinque giorni a Tròade, dove ci trattenemmo sette giorni.
7 On the first day of the week we met for the breaking of bread. Paul was due to leave the next day, andhe preached a sermon that went on til the middle of the night.	7 Il primo giorno della settimana ci eravamo riuniti a spezzare il pane, e Paolo, che doveva partire il giorno dopo, conversava con loro e prolungò il discorso fino a mezzanotte.
8 A number of lamps were lit in the upstairs room where we were assembled,	8 C’era un buon numero di lampade nella stanza al piano superiore, dove eravamo riuniti.
9 and as Paul went on and on, a young man called Eutychus who was sitting on the window-sil grewdrowsy and was overcome by sleep and fel to the ground three floors below. He was picked up dead.	9 Ora, un ragazzo di nome Èutico, seduto alla finestra, mentre Paolo continuava a conversare senza sosta, fu preso da un sonno profondo; sopraffatto dal sonno, cadde giù dal terzo piano e venne raccolto morto.
10 Paul went down and stooped to clasp the boy to him, saying, 'There is no need to worry, there is stillife in him.'	10 Paolo allora scese, si gettò su di lui, lo abbracciò e disse: «Non vi turbate; è vivo!».
11 Then he went back upstairs where he broke the bread and ate and carried on talking til he left atdaybreak.	11 Poi risalì, spezzò il pane, mangiò e, dopo aver parlato ancora molto fino all’alba, partì.
12 They took the boy away alive, and were greatly encouraged.	12 Intanto avevano ricondotto il ragazzo vivo, e si sentirono molto consolati.
13 We were now to go on ahead by sea, so we set sail for Assos, where we were to take Paul on board;this was what he had arranged, for he wanted to go overland.	13 Noi, che eravamo già partiti per nave, facemmo vela per Asso, dove dovevamo prendere a bordo Paolo; così infatti egli aveva deciso, intendendo fare il viaggio a piedi.
14 When he rejoined us at Assos we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene.	14 Quando ci ebbe raggiunti ad Asso, lo prendemmo con noi e arrivammo a Mitilene.
15 The next day we sailed from there and arrived opposite Chios. The second day we touched at Samosand, after stopping at Trogyllium, made Miletus the next day.	15 Salpati da qui, il giorno dopo ci trovammo di fronte a Chio; l’indomani toccammo Samo e il giorno seguente giungemmo a Mileto.
16 Paul had decided to pass wide of Ephesus so as to avoid spending time in Asia, since he wasanxious to be in Jerusalem, if possible, for the day of Pentecost.	16 Paolo infatti aveva deciso di passare al largo di Èfeso, per evitare di subire ritardi nella provincia d’Asia: gli premeva essere a Gerusalemme, se possibile, per il giorno della Pentecoste.
17 From Miletus he sent for the elders of the church of Ephesus.	17 Da Mileto mandò a chiamare a Èfeso gli anziani della Chiesa.
18 When they arrived he addressed these words to them: 'You know what my way of life has been eversince the first day I set foot among you in Asia,	18 Quando essi giunsero presso di lui, disse loro: «Voi sapete come mi sono comportato con voi per tutto questo tempo, fin dal primo giorno in cui arrivai in Asia:
19 how I have served the Lord in al humility, with al the sorrows and trials that came to me through theplots of the Jews.	19 ho servito il Signore con tutta umiltà, tra le lacrime e le prove che mi hanno procurato le insidie dei Giudei;
20 I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to you; I have preached to you and instructedyou both in public and in your homes,	20 non mi sono mai tirato indietro da ciò che poteva essere utile, al fine di predicare a voi e di istruirvi, in pubblico e nelle case,
21 urging both Jews and Greeks to turn to God and to believe in our Lord Jesus.	21 testimoniando a Giudei e Greci la conversione a Dio e la fede nel Signore nostro Gesù.
22 'And now you see me on my way to Jerusalem in captivity to the Spirit; I have no idea what wilhappen to me there,	22 Ed ecco, dunque, costretto dallo Spirito, io vado a Gerusalemme, senza sapere ciò che là mi accadrà.
23 except that the Holy Spirit, in town after town, has made it clear to me that imprisonment andpersecution await me.	23 So soltanto che lo Spirito Santo, di città in città, mi attesta che mi attendono catene e tribolazioni.
24 But I do not place any value on my own life, provided that I complete the mission the Lord Jesus gaveme -- to bear witness to the good news of God's grace.	24 Non ritengo in nessun modo preziosa la mia vita, purché conduca a termine la mia corsa e il servizio che mi fu affidato dal Signore Gesù, di dare testimonianza al vangelo della grazia di Dio.
25 'I now feel sure that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom wil eversee my face again.	25 E ora, ecco, io so che non vedrete più il mio volto, voi tutti tra i quali sono passato annunciando il Regno.
26 And so on this very day I swear that my conscience is clear as far as all of you are concerned,	26 Per questo attesto solennemente oggi, davanti a voi, che io sono innocente del sangue di tutti,
27 for I have without faltering put before you the whole of God's purpose.	27 perché non mi sono sottratto al dovere di annunciarvi tutta la volontà di Dio.
28 'Be on your guard for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you theguardians, to feed the Church of God which he bought with the blood of his own Son.	28 Vegliate su voi stessi e su tutto il gregge, in mezzo al quale lo Spirito Santo vi ha costituiti come custodi per essere pastori della Chiesa di Dio, che si è acquistata con il sangue del proprio Figlio.
29 'I know quite wel that when I have gone fierce wolves wil invade you and will have no mercy on theflock.	29 Io so che dopo la mia partenza verranno fra voi lupi rapaci, che non risparmieranno il gregge;
30 Even from your own ranks there wil be men coming forward with a travesty of the truth on their lips toinduce the disciples to fol ow them.	30 perfino in mezzo a voi sorgeranno alcuni a parlare di cose perverse, per attirare i discepoli dietro di sé.
31 So be on your guard, remembering how night and day for three years I never slackened in counsel ingeach one of you with tears.	31 Per questo vigilate, ricordando che per tre anni, notte e giorno, io non ho cessato, tra le lacrime, di ammonire ciascuno di voi.
32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace that has power to build you up and togive you your inheritance among all the sanctified.	32 E ora vi affido a Dio e alla parola della sua grazia, che ha la potenza di edificare e di concedere l’eredità fra tutti quelli che da lui sono santificati.
33 'I have never asked anyone for money or clothes;	33 Non ho desiderato né argento né oro né il vestito di nessuno.
34 you know for yourselves that these hands of mine earned enough to meet my needs and those of mycompanions.	34 Voi sapete che alle necessità mie e di quelli che erano con me hanno provveduto queste mie mani.
35 By every means I have shown you that we must exert ourselves in this way to support the weak,remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, who himself said, "There is more happiness in giving than inreceiving." '	35 In tutte le maniere vi ho mostrato che i deboli si devono soccorrere lavorando così, ricordando le parole del Signore Gesù, che disse: “Si è più beati nel dare che nel ricevere!”».
36 When he had finished speaking he knelt down with them all and prayed.	36 Dopo aver detto questo, si inginocchiò con tutti loro e pregò.
37 By now they were all in tears; they put their arms round Paul's neck and kissed him;	37 Tutti scoppiarono in pianto e, gettandosi al collo di Paolo, lo baciavano,
38 what saddened them most was his saying they would never see his face again. Then they escortedhim to the ship.	38 addolorati soprattutto perché aveva detto che non avrebbero più rivisto il suo volto. E lo accompagnarono fino alla nave.
