NEW JERUSALEMSTUTTGARTENSIA-DELITZSCH
When the disturbance was over, Paul sent for the disciples and, after speaking words ofencouragement to them, said good -- bye and set out for Macedonia.1 וְאַחֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר שָׁקְטָה הַמְּהוּמָה קָרָא פוֹלוֹס לַתַּלְמִידִים וַיְבָרְכֵם וַיֵּצֵא לָלֶכֶת אֶל־מַקְדּוֹנְיָא
On his way through those areas he said many words of encouragement to them and then made hisway into Greece,2 וַיַּעֲבֹר בַּמְּדִינוֹת הָהֵן וַיַּזְהֵר אֹתָם בִּדְבָרִים רַבִּים וַיָּבֹא אֶל־אֶרֶץ יָוָן
where he spent three months. He was leaving by ship for Syria when a plot organised against him bythe Jews made him decide to go back by way of Macedonia.3 וַיֵּשֵׁב שָׁם שְׁלשָׁה חֳדָשִׁים וַיְהִי בְּאָמְרוֹ לָלֶכֶת אֶל־סוּרְיָא וַיֶּאֶרְבוּ־לוֹ הַיְּהוּדִים וַיִּגְמֹר בְּלִבּוֹ לָשׁוּב דֶּרֶךְ מַקְדּוֹנְיָא
He was accompanied by Sopater, son of Pyrrhus, who came from Beroea; Aristarchus and Secunduswho came from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy, as well as Tychicus and Trophimus who werefrom Asia.4 וַיֵּלְכוּ אִתּוֹ עַד לְאַסְיָא סוֹפַטְרוֹס בֶּן־פּוּרוֹס הַבְּרוֹאִי וּמִן־הַתַּסְלוֹנִיקִים אֲרִסְטַרְכוֹס וּסְקוֹנְדוֹס וְגָיוֹס הַדַּרְבִי וְטִימוֹתִיּוֹס וּמִן־אַסְיָא טוּכִיקוֹס וּטְרוֹפִימוֹס
They al went on to Troas where they waited for us.5 וְאֵלֶּה הָלְכוּ לְפָנֵינוּ וַיּוֹחִילוּ לָנוּ בִּטְרוֹאָס
We ourselves left Philippi by ship after the days of Unleavened Bread and joined them five days later atTroas, where we stayed for a week.6 וַאֲנַחְנוּ יָצָאנוּ מִן־פִילִפִּי אַחֲרֵי יְמֵי חַג־הַמַּצּוֹת וּמִקֵּץ חֲמִשָּׁה יָמִים בָּאנוּ בָאֳנִיָּה אֲלֵיהֶם אֶל־טְרוֹאַס וַנֵּשֶׁב־שָׁם שִׁבְעַת יָמִים
On the first day of the week we met for the breaking of bread. Paul was due to leave the next day, andhe preached a sermon that went on til the middle of the night.7 וַיְהִי בְּאֶחָד בַּשַּׁבָּת כַּאֲשֶׁר נֶאֶסְפוּ הַתַּלְמִידִים לִבְצֹעַ הַלֶּחֶם וַיְדַבֵּר אִתָּם פּוֹלוֹס כִּי־אָמַר לָלֶכֶת מִשָּׁם לְמָחֳרַת הַיּוֹם וַיַּאֲרֵךְ הַדָּבָר עַד־חֲצוֹת הַלָּיְלָה
A number of lamps were lit in the upstairs room where we were assembled,8
and as Paul went on and on, a young man called Eutychus who was sitting on the window-sil grewdrowsy and was overcome by sleep and fel to the ground three floors below. He was picked up dead.9 וּבָחוּר אֶחָד שְׁמוֹ אֶוְטִיכוֹס ישֵׁב בַּחַלּוֹן וַיֵּרָדֵם בְּהַאֲרִיךְ פּוֹלוֹס אֶת־אִמְרָתוֹ וַתִּגְבַּר עָלָיו שְׁנָתוֹ וַיִּפֹּל מֵהַקּוֹמָה הַשְּׁלִישִׁית לְמַטָּה וַיִּשָּׂאֻהוּ מֵת
Paul went down and stooped to clasp the boy to him, saying, 'There is no need to worry, there is stillife in him.'10 וַיֵּרֶד פּוֹלוֹס וַיִּגְהַר עָלָיו וַיְחַבְּקֵהוּ וַיֹּאמֶר אַל־תִּבָּהֲלוּ כִּי נִשְׁמָתוֹ בּוֹ
Then he went back upstairs where he broke the bread and ate and carried on talking til he left atdaybreak.11 וְאַחַר עָלָה וַיִּבְצַע הַלֶּחֶם וַיִּטְעַם וַיֶּרֶב לָשִׂיחַ אִתָּם עַד־אוֹר הַבֹּקֶר וַיֵּצֵא לָלֶכֶת לְדַרְכּוֹ
They took the boy away alive, and were greatly encouraged.12
We were now to go on ahead by sea, so we set sail for Assos, where we were to take Paul on board;this was what he had arranged, for he wanted to go overland.13 וַאֲנַחְנוּ קִדַּמְנוּ לָרֶדֶת בָּאֳנִיָּה וַנַּעֲבֹר אַסּוֹסָה לְמַעַן נִקַּח־שָׁם אִתָּנוּ אֶת־פּוֹלוֹס כִּי־כֵן צִוָּה וְהוּא חשֵׁב בְּלִבּוֹ לָלֶכֶת שָׁמָּה בְּרַגְלָיו
When he rejoined us at Assos we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene.14
The next day we sailed from there and arrived opposite Chios. The second day we touched at Samosand, after stopping at Trogyllium, made Miletus the next day.15 וּמִשָּׁם יָצָאנוּ בָאֳנִיָּה וַנִּפְגַּע מִמָּחֳרָת אֶל־מוּל כִּיּוֹס וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי עָבַרְנוּ אֶל־סָמוֹס וַנָּלֶן בִּטְרוֹגוּלְיוֹן וּלְמָחֳרָתוֹ בָּאנוּ אֶל־מִילִיטוֹס
Paul had decided to pass wide of Ephesus so as to avoid spending time in Asia, since he wasanxious to be in Jerusalem, if possible, for the day of Pentecost.16 כִּי־פוֹלוֹס אָמַר לַעֲבֹר מֵעַל־פְּנֵי אֶפְסוֹס פֶּן־יִצְטָרֵךְ לְהִתְמַהְמֵהַּ בְּאַסְיָא כִּי אָץ לָבוֹא אִם־יוּכַל עַד־חַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת יְרוּשָׁלָיִם
From Miletus he sent for the elders of the church of Ephesus.17
When they arrived he addressed these words to them: 'You know what my way of life has been eversince the first day I set foot among you in Asia,18 וַיָּבֹאוּ אֵלָיו וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם אַתֶּם יְדַעְתֶּם אֵיךְ הָיִיתִי עִמָּכֶם בְּכָל־עֵת מִן־הַיּוֹם הָרִאשׁוֹן אֲשֶׁר דָּרְכָה רַגְלִי בְּאַסְיָא
how I have served the Lord in al humility, with al the sorrows and trials that came to me through theplots of the Jews.19 אֲשֶׁר עָבַדְתִּי אֶת־הָאָדוֹן בְּכָל־עֲנָוָה וּבִדְמָעוֹת הַרְבֵּה וּבְמַסּוֹת הַמֹּצְאוֹת אֹתִי בְּנִכְלֵי הַיְּהוּדִים
I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to you; I have preached to you and instructedyou both in public and in your homes,20 אֵיךְ לֹא־כִחַדְתִּי מִכֶּם כָּל־דְּבַר תּוֹעֶלֶת וְהִגַּדְתִּיו לָכֶם וְלִמַּדְתִּי אֶתְכֶם בָּרַבִּים וּבְכָל־בַּיִת וָבָיִת
urging both Jews and Greeks to turn to God and to believe in our Lord Jesus.21 וָאָעִיד לַיְּהוּדִים וְלַיְּוָנִים אֶת־הַתְּשׁוּבָה לֵאלֹהִים וְאֵת הָאֱמוּנָה בַּאֲדֹנֵינוּ יֵשׁוּעַ הַמָּשִׁיחַ
'And now you see me on my way to Jerusalem in captivity to the Spirit; I have no idea what wilhappen to me there,22 וְעַתָּה הִנְנִי אֲסִיר הָרוּחַ לָלֶכֶת יְרוּשָׁלָיִם וְאֵינֶנִּי יוֹדֵעַ מַה־יִּקְרֵנִי שָׁם
except that the Holy Spirit, in town after town, has made it clear to me that imprisonment andpersecution await me.23 אֶפֶס כִּי־רוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ מֵעִיד בְּכָל־עִיר וָעִיר לֵאמֹר כִּי־מוֹסֵרוֹת וְצָרוֹת נָכוֹנוּ לִי
But I do not place any value on my own life, provided that I complete the mission the Lord Jesus gaveme -- to bear witness to the good news of God's grace.24 אֲבָל לֹא אֶחְשׁשׁ לְאַחַת מֵהֵנָּה וְגַם־נַפְשִׁי לֹא־יָקְרָה בְעֵינָי לְמַעַן אַשְׁלִים בְּשִׂמְחָה אֶת־מְרוּצָתִי וְאֶת־הַשֵּׁרוּת אֲשֶׁר קִבַּלְתִּי מֵאֵת הָאָדוֹן יֵשׁוּעַ לְהָעִיד עַל־בְּשׂוֹרַת חֶסֶד אֱלֹהִים
'I now feel sure that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom wil eversee my face again.25 וְעַתָּה הִנֵּה יֹדֵעַ אָנֹכִי כִּי אַתֶּם כֻּלְּכֶם אֲשֶׁר הִתְהַלַּכְתִּי בְקִרְבְּכֶם הָלוֹךְ וְהַשְׁמֵעַ אֶת־מַלְכוּת יְהוָֹה כִּי לֹא־תוֹסִיפוּ עוֹד רְאוֹת פָּנָי
And so on this very day I swear that my conscience is clear as far as all of you are concerned,26
for I have without faltering put before you the whole of God's purpose.27 כִּי לֹא כִחַדְתִּי מֵהַגִּיד לָכֶם אֶת־עֲצַת הָאֱלֹהִים כֻּלָּהּ
'Be on your guard for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you theguardians, to feed the Church of God which he bought with the blood of his own Son.28 לָכֵן שִׁמְרוּ אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹתֵיכֶם וְאֶת־כָּל־הָעֵדֶר אֲשֶׁר הֵקִים אֶתְכֶם רוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ לִפְקִידִים בּוֹ לִרְעוֹת אֶת־עֲדַת הָאֱלֹהִים אֲשֶׁר קָנָה־לוֹ הָאָדוֹן בְּדַם־נַפְשׁוֹ
'I know quite wel that when I have gone fierce wolves wil invade you and will have no mercy on theflock.29 כִּי יֹדֵעַ אֲנִי אֲשֶׁר אַחֲרֵי צֵאתִי יָבוֹאוּ בְתוֹכְכֶם זְאֵבִים עַזִּים אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יָחוּסוּ עַל־הָעֵדֶר
Even from your own ranks there wil be men coming forward with a travesty of the truth on their lips toinduce the disciples to fol ow them.30 וְגַם־מִקִּרְבְּכֶם יָקוּמוּ אֲנָשִׁים דֹּבְרֵי תַהְפֻּכוֹת לְהַטּוֹת אַחֲרֵיהֶם אֶת־הַתַּלְמִידִים
So be on your guard, remembering how night and day for three years I never slackened in counsel ingeach one of you with tears.31 עַל־כֵּן שִׁקְדוּ וְזִכְרוּ כִּי שָׁלשׁ שָׁנִים יוֹמָם וָלַיְלָה לֹא חָדַלְתִּי לְדַבֵּר עַל־לֵב כָּל־אֶחָד מִכֶּם בִּדְמָעוֹת
And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace that has power to build you up and togive you your inheritance among all the sanctified.32 וְעַתָּה אַחַי אֲנִי מֹסֵר אֶתְכֶם לֵאלֹהִים וְלִדְבַר חַסְדּוֹ אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ הַיְכֹלֶת לִבְנוֹת אֶתְכֶם וְלָתֵת לָכֶם נַחֲלָה בְּקֶרֶב כָּל־הַמְקֻדָּשִׁים
'I have never asked anyone for money or clothes;33
you know for yourselves that these hands of mine earned enough to meet my needs and those of mycompanions.34 וְאַתֶּם יְדַעְתֶּם כִּי־יָדַי אֵלֶּה עָבְדוּ בְּעַד צְרָכַי וּבְעַד צָרְכֵי הַהֹלְכִים אִתִּי
By every means I have shown you that we must exert ourselves in this way to support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, who himself said, "There is more happiness in giving than inreceiving." '35 וּבַכֹּל הֶרְאֵיתִי אֶתְכֶם כִּי כֵן עָלֵינוּ לַעֲמֹל וְלִתְמֹךְ אֶת־הַחַלָּשִׁים וְלִזְכֹּר אֶת־דִּבְרֵי הָאָדוֹן יֵשׁוּעַ כִּי־הוּא אָמַר טוֹב אֲשֶׁר־תִּתֵּן מִשֶּׁתִּקָּח
When he had finished speaking he knelt down with them all and prayed.36
By now they were all in tears; they put their arms round Paul's neck and kissed him;37 וַיִּבְכּוּ כֻלָּם בְּכִי גָדוֹל וַיִּפְּלוּ עַל־צַוְּארֵי פוֹלוֹס וַיְנַשְּׁקוּ לוֹ
what saddened them most was his saying they would never see his face again. Then they escortedhim to the ship.38 וּבְיוֹתֵר הִתְעַצְּבוּ עַל־הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר דִּבֵּר כִּי לֹא־יוֹסִיפוּ עוֹד לִרְאוֹת פָּנָיו וַיְלַוֻּהוּ אֶל־הָאֳנִיָּה
