NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
It happened that at Iconium they went to the Jewish synagogue, in the same way, and they spoke soeffectively that a great many Jews and Greeks became believers.1 In Iconium they entered the Jewish synagogue together and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks came to believe,
(However, the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the gentiles against the brothers and set them inopposition.)2 although the disbelieving Jews stirred up and poisoned the minds of the Gentiles against the brothers.
Accordingly Paul and Barnabas stayed on for some time, preaching fearlessly in the Lord; and heattested al they said about his gift of grace, al owing signs and wonders to be performed by them.3 So they stayed for a considerable period, speaking out boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the word about his grace by granting signs and wonders to occur through their hands.
The people in the city were divided; some supported the Jews, others the apostles,4 The people of the city were divided: some were with the Jews; others, with the apostles.
but eventual y with the connivance of the authorities a move was made by gentiles as well as Jews tomake attacks on them and to stone them.5 When there was an attempt by both the Gentiles and the Jews, together with their leaders, to attack and stone them,
When they came to hear of this, they went off for safety to Lycaonia where, in the towns of Lystra andDerbe and in the surrounding country,6 they realized it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding countryside,
they preached the good news.7 where they continued to proclaim the good news.
There was a man sitting there who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled frombirth;8 At Lystra there was a crippled man, lame from birth, who had never walked.
he was listening to Paul preaching, and Paul looked at him intently and saw that he had the faith to becured.9 He listened to Paul speaking, who looked intently at him, saw that he had the faith to be healed,
Paul said in a loud voice, 'Get to your feet-stand up,' and the cripple jumped up and began to walk.10 and called out in a loud voice, "Stand up straight on your feet." He jumped up and began to walk about.
When the crowds saw what Paul had done they shouted in the language of Lycaonia, 'The gods havecome down to us in human form.'11 When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they cried out in Lycaonian, "The gods have come down to us in human form."
They addressed Barnabas as Zeus, and since Paul was the principal speaker they cal ed himHermes.12 They called Barnabas "Zeus" and Paul "Hermes," because he was the chief speaker.
The priests of Zeus-outside-the-Gate, proposing that al the people should offer sacrifice with them, brought garlanded oxen to the gates.13 And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, for he together with the people intended to offer sacrifice.
When the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard what was happening they tore their clothes, and rushedinto the crowd, shouting,14 The apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their garments when they heard this and rushed out into the crowd, shouting,
'Friends, what do you think you are doing? We are only human beings, mortal like yourselves. Wehave come with good news to make you turn from these empty idols to the living God who made sky and earthand the sea and all that these hold.15 "Men, why are you doing this? We are of the same nature as you, human beings. We proclaim to you good news that you should turn from these idols to the living God, 'who made heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them.'
In the past he al owed al the nations to go their own way;16 In past generations he allowed all Gentiles to go their own ways;
but even then he did not leave you without evidence of himself in the good things he does for you: hesends you rain from heaven and seasons of fruitfulness; he fil s you with food and your hearts with merriment.'17 yet, in bestowing his goodness, he did not leave himself without witness, for he gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, and filled you with nourishment and gladness for your hearts."
With this speech they just managed to prevent the crowd from offering them sacrifice.18 Even with these words, they scarcely restrained the crowds from offering sacrifice to them.
Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and turned the people against them. They stonedPaul and dragged him outside the town, thinking he was dead.19 However, some Jews from Antioch and Iconium arrived and won over the crowds. They stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.
The disciples came crowding round him but, as they did so, he stood up and went back to the town. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.20 But when the disciples gathered around him, he got up and entered the city. On the following day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.
Having preached the good news in that town and made a considerable number of disciples, they wentback through Lystra, Iconium and Antioch.21 After they had proclaimed the good news to that city and made a considerable number of disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch.
They put fresh heart into the disciples, encouraging them to persevere in the faith, saying, 'We mustal experience many hardships before we enter the kingdom of God.'22 They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith, saying, "It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God."
In each of these churches they appointed elders, and with prayer and fasting they commended themto the Lord in whom they had come to believe.23 They appointed presbyters for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, commended them to the Lord in whom they had put their faith.
They passed through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia.24 Then they traveled through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia.
Then after proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia25 After proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia.
and from there sailed for Antioch, where they had original y been commended to the grace of God forthe work they had now completed.26 From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now accomplished.
On their arrival they assembled the church and gave an account of all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the gentiles.27 And when they arrived, they called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
They stayed there with the disciples for some time.28 Then they spent no little time with the disciples.
