NEW JERUSALEMGREEK BIBLE
It happened that at Iconium they went to the Jewish synagogue, in the same way, and they spoke soeffectively that a great many Jews and Greeks became believers.1 Εν δε τω Ικονιω εισελθοντες ομου εις την συναγωγην των Ιουδαιων, ελαλησαν ουτως ωστε επιστευσε πολυ πληθος Ιουδαιων τε και Ελληνων.
(However, the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the gentiles against the brothers and set them inopposition.)2 Οσοι δε Ιουδαιοι δεν επειθοντο παρωξυναν και διεστρεψαν τας ψυχας των εθνικων κατα των αδελφων.
Accordingly Paul and Barnabas stayed on for some time, preaching fearlessly in the Lord; and heattested al they said about his gift of grace, al owing signs and wonders to be performed by them.3 Ικανον λοιπον καιρον διετριψαν λαλουντες μετα παρρησιας περι του Κυριου, οστις εμαρτυρει εις τον λογον της χαριτος αυτου, και εδιδε να γινωνται σημεια και τερατα δια των χειρων αυτων.
The people in the city were divided; some supported the Jews, others the apostles,4 Εσχισθη δε το πληθος της πολεως, και οι μεν ησαν μετα των Ιουδαιων, οι δε μετα των αποστολων.
but eventual y with the connivance of the authorities a move was made by gentiles as well as Jews tomake attacks on them and to stone them.5 Και οτε ωρμησαν οι εθνικοι και οι Ιουδαιοι μετα των αρχοντων αυτων εις το να υβρισωσι και να λιθοβολησωσιν αυτους,
When they came to hear of this, they went off for safety to Lycaonia where, in the towns of Lystra andDerbe and in the surrounding country,6 εννοησαντες κατεφυγον εις τας πολεις της Λυκαονιας Λυστραν και Δερβην και τα περιχωρα,
they preached the good news.7 και εκει εκηρυττον το ευαγγελιον.
There was a man sitting there who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled frombirth;8 Εν δε τοις Λυστροις εκαθητο ανηρ τις αδυνατος τους ποδας, χωλος υπαρχων εκ κοιλιας μητρος αυτου, οστις ποτε δεν ειχε περιπατησει.
he was listening to Paul preaching, and Paul looked at him intently and saw that he had the faith to becured.9 Ουτος ηκουε τον Παυλον λαλουντα? οστις ατενισας εις αυτον και ιδων οτι εχει πιστιν δια να σωθη,
Paul said in a loud voice, 'Get to your feet-stand up,' and the cripple jumped up and began to walk.10 ειπε μετα μεγαλης φωνης? Σηκωθητι επι τους ποδας σου ορθος. Και επηδα και περιεπατει.
When the crowds saw what Paul had done they shouted in the language of Lycaonia, 'The gods havecome down to us in human form.'11 Οι δε οχλοι, ιδοντες τουτο το οποιον εκαμεν ο Παυλος, υψωσαν την φωνην αυτων, λεγοντες Λυκαονιστι? Οι θεοι ομοιωθεντες με ανθρωπους κατεβησαν προς ημας.
They addressed Barnabas as Zeus, and since Paul was the principal speaker they cal ed himHermes.12 Και ωνομαζον τον μεν Βαρναβαν Δια, τον δε Παυλον Ερμην, επειδη αυτος ητο ο αρχηγος του λογου.
The priests of Zeus-outside-the-Gate, proposing that al the people should offer sacrifice with them, brought garlanded oxen to the gates.13 Και ο ιερευς του Διος, του οντος εμπροσθεν της πολεως αυτων, εφερε ταυρους και στεμματα εις τας πυλας μετα του οχλου και ηθελε να προσφερη θυσιαν.
When the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard what was happening they tore their clothes, and rushedinto the crowd, shouting,14 Ακουσαντες δε οι αποστολοι Βαρναβας και Παυλος, διεσχισαν τα ιματια αυτων και επηδησαν εις το μεσον του οχλου, κραζοντες
'Friends, what do you think you are doing? We are only human beings, mortal like yourselves. Wehave come with good news to make you turn from these empty idols to the living God who made sky and earthand the sea and all that these hold.15 και λεγοντες?
In the past he al owed al the nations to go their own way;16 οστις εν ταις παρελθουσαις γενεαις αφηκε παντα τα εθνη να περιπατωσιν εν ταις οδοις αυτων.
but even then he did not leave you without evidence of himself in the good things he does for you: hesends you rain from heaven and seasons of fruitfulness; he fil s you with food and your hearts with merriment.'17 καιτοι δεν αφηκεν αμαρτυρητον εαυτον αγαθαποιων, διδων εις ημας ουρανοθεν βροχας και καιρους καρποφορους, γεμιζων τροφης και ευφροσυνης τας καρδιας ημων.
With this speech they just managed to prevent the crowd from offering them sacrifice.18 Και ταυτα λεγοντες μολις εμποδισαν τους οχλους, ωστε να μη προσφερωσι θυσιαν εις αυτους.
Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and turned the people against them. They stonedPaul and dragged him outside the town, thinking he was dead.19 Εν τουτω δε ηλθον Ιουδαιοι εξ Αντιοχειας και Ικονιου, και πεισαντες τους οχλους και λιθοβολησαντες τον Παυλον, εσυραν εξω της πολεως, νομισαντες οτι απεθανεν.
The disciples came crowding round him but, as they did so, he stood up and went back to the town. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.20 Οτε δε περιεκυκλωσαν αυτον οι μαθηται, σηκωθεις εισηλθεν εις την πολιν και τη επαυριον εξηλθε μετα του Βαρναβα εις Δερβην.
Having preached the good news in that town and made a considerable number of disciples, they wentback through Lystra, Iconium and Antioch.21 Και αφου εκηρυξαν το ευαγγελιον εν τη πολει εκεινη και εμαθητευσαν ικανους, υπεστρεψαν εις την Λυστραν και Ικονιον και Αντιοχειαν,
They put fresh heart into the disciples, encouraging them to persevere in the faith, saying, 'We mustal experience many hardships before we enter the kingdom of God.'22 επιστηριζοντες τας ψυχας των μαθητων, προτρεποντες να εμμενωσιν εις την πιστιν, και διδασκοντες οτι δια πολλων θλιψεων πρεπει να εισελθωμεν εις την βασιλειαν του Θεου.
In each of these churches they appointed elders, and with prayer and fasting they commended themto the Lord in whom they had come to believe.23 Και αφου εχειροτονησαν εις αυτους πρεσβυτερους κατα πασαν εκκλησιαν, προσευχηθεντες με νηστειας, αφιερωσαν αυτους εις τον Κυριον, εις τον οποιον ειχον πιστευσει.
They passed through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia.24 Και διελθοντες την Πισιδιαν ηλθον εις Παμφυλιαν,
Then after proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia25 και κηρυξαντες τον λογον εν Περγη, κατεβησαν εις Ατταλειαν,
and from there sailed for Antioch, where they had original y been commended to the grace of God forthe work they had now completed.26 και εκειθεν απεπλευσαν εις Αντιοχειαν, οθεν ησαν παραδεδομενοι εις την χαριν του Θεου δια το εργον, το οποιον εξετελεσαν.
On their arrival they assembled the church and gave an account of all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the gentiles.27 Ελθοντες δε και συναξαντες την εκκλησιαν, ανηγγειλαν οσα εκαμεν ο Θεος δι' αυτων, και οτι ηνοιξεν εις τα εθνη θυραν πιστεως.
They stayed there with the disciples for some time.28 Και διετριβον εκει ουκ ολιγον καιρον μετα των μαθητων.
