It happened that at Iconium they went to the Jewish synagogue, in the same way, and they spoke soeffectively that a great many Jews and Greeks became believers.1 וַיְהִי בְאִיקָנְיוֹן וַיָּבֹאוּ יַחְדָּו אֶל־בֵּית כְּנֵסֶת הַיְּהוּדִים וַיְדַבְּרוּ־שָׁם עַד כִּי־הֶאֱמִין הָמוֹן רָב מִן־הַיְּהוּדִים וּמִן־הַיְּוָנִים
(However, the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the gentiles against the brothers and set them inopposition.)2 אַךְ הַיְּהוּדִים אֲשֶׁר לֹא הֶאֱמִינוּ עוֹרְרוּ וְהִכְעִיסוּ אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹת הַגּוֹיִם עַל־הָאַחִים
Accordingly Paul and Barnabas stayed on for some time, preaching fearlessly in the Lord; and heattested al they said about his gift of grace, al owing signs and wonders to be performed by them.3 וַיֵּשְׁבוּ־שָׁם יָמִים רַבִּים וַיְלַמְּדוּ בְּבִטְחוֹנָם בַּיהוֹה הַמֵּעִיד עַל־דְּבַר חַסְדּוֹ בַּעֲשֹוֹתוֹ עַל־יָדָם אֹתוֹת וּמוֹפְתִים
The people in the city were divided; some supported the Jews, others the apostles,4
but eventual y with the connivance of the authorities a move was made by gentiles as well as Jews tomake attacks on them and to stone them.5 וַתְּהִי מְהוּמַת הַגּוֹיִם וְהַיְּהוּדִים עִם־רָאשֵׁיהֶם לְהִתְעַלֵּל בָּהֶם וּלְסָקְלָם
When they came to hear of this, they went off for safety to Lycaonia where, in the towns of Lystra andDerbe and in the surrounding country,6 וַיִּוָּדַע לָהֶם וַיִּבְרְחוּ לְעָרֵי לוּקוֹנְיָא אֶל־לוּסְטְרָא וְדַרְבִי וּסְבִיבוֹתָן
they preached the good news.7 וַיְבַשְּׂרוּ־שָׁם הַבְּשׂוֹרָה
There was a man sitting there who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled frombirth;8 וְאִישׁ נְכֵה רַגְלַיִם הָיָה בְלוּסְטְרָא וְהוּא ישֵׁב פִּסֵּחַ מִבֶּטֶן אִמּוֹ וְלֹא הָלַךְ מִיָּמָיו
he was listening to Paul preaching, and Paul looked at him intently and saw that he had the faith to becured.9 וַיִּשְׁמַע אֶת־פּוֹלוֹס מְדַבֵּר וְהוּא הִסְתַּכֵּל בּוֹ וַיַּרְא כִּי־אֱמוּנָה בוֹ לְהִוָּשֵׁעַ
Paul said in a loud voice, 'Get to your feet-stand up,' and the cripple jumped up and began to walk.10 וַיֹּאמֶר בְּקוֹל גָּדוֹל עֲמֹד הָכֵן עַל־רַגְלֶיךָ וַיְדַלֵּג וַיִּתְהַלָּךְ
When the crowds saw what Paul had done they shouted in the language of Lycaonia, 'The gods havecome down to us in human form.'11 וַהֲמוֹן הָעָם כִּרְאוֹתָם אֵת אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה פּוֹלוֹס נָשְׂאוּ אֶת־קוֹלָם וַיֹּאמְרוּ בְּלָשׁוֹן לוּקוֹנִית יָרְדוּ אֵלֵינוּ הָאֱלֹהִים בִּדְמוּת אֲנָשִׁים
They addressed Barnabas as Zeus, and since Paul was the principal speaker they cal ed himHermes.12 וַיִּקְרְאוּ לְבַר־נַבָּא בֵּל וּלְפוֹלוֹס קָרְאוּ הֶרְמִיס בַּאֲשֶׁר הוּא רֹאשׁ הַמְדַבְּרִים
The priests of Zeus-outside-the-Gate, proposing that al the people should offer sacrifice with them,brought garlanded oxen to the gates.13 וְכֹהֵן בֵּית־בֵּל אֲשֶׁר מִחוּץ לְעִירָם הֵבִיא הַשַּׁעְרָה שְׁוָרִים וַעֲטָרוֹת וַיַּחְפֹּץ לִזְבֹּחַ הוּא וַהֲמוֹן הָעָם
When the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard what was happening they tore their clothes, and rushedinto the crowd, shouting,14 וַיְהִי כִּשְׁמֹעַ זֹאת הַשְּׁלִיחִים פּוֹלוֹס וּבַר־נַבָּא וַיִּקְרְעוּ אֶת־בִּגְדֵיהֶם וַיָּרוּצוּ אֶל־תּוֹךְ־הָעָם
'Friends, what do you think you are doing? We are only human beings, mortal like yourselves. Wehave come with good news to make you turn from these empty idols to the living God who made sky and earthand the sea and all that these hold.15 וַיִּצְעֲקוּ לֵאמֹר אֲנָשִׁים לָמָּה תַּעֲשֹוּ כָזֹאת גַּם־אֲנַחְנוּ בְנֵי־אָדָם חַלָּשִׁים כְּמוֹכֶם וּנְבַשְּׂרָה אֶתְכֶם לְמַעַן שׁוֹב תָּשׁוּבוּ מִן־הַבְלֵיכֶם אֵלֶּה אֶל־אֱלֹהִים חַיִּים אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה אֶת־הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת־הָאָרֶץ וְאֶת־הַיָּם וְאֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־בָּם
In the past he al owed al the nations to go their own way;16 וַאֲשֶׁר בְּדֹרוֹת קֶדֶם הִנִּיחַ לְכָל־הַגּוֹיִם לָלֶכֶת בְּדַרְכֵיהֶם
but even then he did not leave you without evidence of himself in the good things he does for you: hesends you rain from heaven and seasons of fruitfulness; he fil s you with food and your hearts with merriment.'17 וְגַם לֹא־חָדַל לְהָעִיד עַל־עַצְמוֹ וַיֵּיטֶב לָנוּ בְּתִתּוֹ מָטָר מִן־הַשָּׁמַיִם וְעִתּוֹת שָׂבָע וַיְמַלֵּא לִבּוֹתֵינוּ מָזוֹן וְשָׂשׂוֹן
With this speech they just managed to prevent the crowd from offering them sacrifice.18 וְאַף בַּדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה כִּמְעַט לֹא־עָצְרוּ כֹחַ לְהָנִיא אֶת־הָעָם מִזְּבֹחַ לָהֶם
Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and turned the people against them. They stonedPaul and dragged him outside the town, thinking he was dead.19 וַיָּבֹאוּ שָׁמָּה יְהוּדִים מִן־אַנְטְיוֹכְיָא וּמִן־אִיקָנְיוֹן וַיָּסִיתוּ אֶת־הָעָם וַיִּרְגְּמוּ אֶת־פּוֹלוֹס בָּאֲבָנִים וַיִּסְחָבֻהוּ חוּצָה לָעִיר בְּחָשְׁבָם כִּי מֵת
The disciples came crowding round him but, as they did so, he stood up and went back to the town. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.20 וַיָּסֹבּוּ אֹתוֹ הַתַּלְמִידִים וַיָּקָם וַיָּבֹא הָעִירָה וּמִמָּחֳרָת יָצָא אֶל־דַּרְבִי הוּא וּבַר־נַבָּא
Having preached the good news in that town and made a considerable number of disciples, they wentback through Lystra, Iconium and Antioch.21 וַיְבַשְּׂרוּ אֶת־הַבְּשׂוֹרָה בָּעִיר הַהִיא וְאַחֲרֵי הַעֲמִידָם תַּלְמִידִים הַרְבֵּה שָׁבוּ אֶל־לוּסְטְרָא וְאִיקָנְיוֹן וְאַנְטְיוֹכְיָא
They put fresh heart into the disciples, encouraging them to persevere in the faith, saying, 'We mustal experience many hardships before we enter the kingdom of God.'22 וַיְחַזְּקוּ אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹת הַתַּלְמִידִים וַיַּזְהִירוּ אֹתָם לַעֲמֹד בָּאֱמוּנָה וְכִי רַק־בְּצָרוֹת רַבּוֹת בּוֹא נָבוֹא אֶל־מַלְכוּת הָאֱלֹהִים
In each of these churches they appointed elders, and with prayer and fasting they commended themto the Lord in whom they had come to believe.23 וַיִּבְחֲרוּ לָהֶם זְקֵנִים בְּכָל־קְהִלָּה וּקְהִלָּה וַיִּתְפַּלְלוּ וַיָּצוּמוּ וַיַּפְקִידוּם בְּיַד הָאָדוֹן אֲשֶׁר הֶאֱמִינוּ בוֹ
They passed through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia.24 וַיַּעַבְרוּ בְּפִיסִדְיָא וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל־פַּמְפּוּלְיָא
Then after proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia25 וַיַּשְׁמִיעוּ אֶת־דְּבַר יְהוָֹה בְּפַרְגִי וַיֵּרְדוּ אֶל־אַטַּלְיָא
and from there sailed for Antioch, where they had original y been commended to the grace of God forthe work they had now completed.26 וּמִשָּׁם בָּאוּ בָאֳנִיָּה אֶל־אַנְטְיוֹכְיָא אֲשֶׁר נִמְסְרוּ־שָׁם לְחֶסֶד אֱלֹהִים עַל־הַמְּלָאכָה אֲשֶׁר מִלְאוּ אֹתָהּ
On their arrival they assembled the church and gave an account of all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the gentiles.27 וּבְבֹאָם שָׁמָּה הִקְהִילוּ אֶת־הָעֵדָה וַיַּגִּידוּ אֵת כָּל־אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה אִתָּם הָאֱלֹהִים וְאֵת אֲשֶׁר־פָּתַח לַגּוֹיִם פֶּתַח הָאֱמוּנָה
They stayed there with the disciples for some time.28 וַיֵּשְׁבוּ שָׁם עִם־הַתַּלְמִידִים יָמִים לֹא מְעַטִּים
