NEW JERUSALEMKING JAMES BIBLE
It happened that at Iconium they went to the Jewish synagogue, in the same way, and they spoke soeffectively that a great many Jews and Greeks became believers.1 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed.
(However, the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the gentiles against the brothers and set them inopposition.)2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.
Accordingly Paul and Barnabas stayed on for some time, preaching fearlessly in the Lord; and heattested al they said about his gift of grace, al owing signs and wonders to be performed by them.3 Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.
The people in the city were divided; some supported the Jews, others the apostles,4 But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles.
but eventual y with the connivance of the authorities a move was made by gentiles as well as Jews tomake attacks on them and to stone them.5 And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them,
When they came to hear of this, they went off for safety to Lycaonia where, in the towns of Lystra andDerbe and in the surrounding country,6 They were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about:
they preached the good news.7 And there they preached the gospel.
There was a man sitting there who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled frombirth;8 And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked:
he was listening to Paul preaching, and Paul looked at him intently and saw that he had the faith to becured.9 The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,
Paul said in a loud voice, 'Get to your feet-stand up,' and the cripple jumped up and began to walk.10 Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.
When the crowds saw what Paul had done they shouted in the language of Lycaonia, 'The gods havecome down to us in human form.'11 And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.
They addressed Barnabas as Zeus, and since Paul was the principal speaker they cal ed himHermes.12 And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.
The priests of Zeus-outside-the-Gate, proposing that al the people should offer sacrifice with them, brought garlanded oxen to the gates.13 Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.
When the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard what was happening they tore their clothes, and rushedinto the crowd, shouting,14 Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out,
'Friends, what do you think you are doing? We are only human beings, mortal like yourselves. Wehave come with good news to make you turn from these empty idols to the living God who made sky and earthand the sea and all that these hold.15 And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:
In the past he al owed al the nations to go their own way;16 Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.
but even then he did not leave you without evidence of himself in the good things he does for you: hesends you rain from heaven and seasons of fruitfulness; he fil s you with food and your hearts with merriment.'17 Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.
With this speech they just managed to prevent the crowd from offering them sacrifice.18 And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them.
Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and turned the people against them. They stonedPaul and dragged him outside the town, thinking he was dead.19 And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.
The disciples came crowding round him but, as they did so, he stood up and went back to the town. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.20 Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.
Having preached the good news in that town and made a considerable number of disciples, they wentback through Lystra, Iconium and Antioch.21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch,
They put fresh heart into the disciples, encouraging them to persevere in the faith, saying, 'We mustal experience many hardships before we enter the kingdom of God.'22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.
In each of these churches they appointed elders, and with prayer and fasting they commended themto the Lord in whom they had come to believe.23 And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.
They passed through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia.24 And after they had passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.
Then after proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia25 And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia:
and from there sailed for Antioch, where they had original y been commended to the grace of God forthe work they had now completed.26 And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled.
On their arrival they assembled the church and gave an account of all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the gentiles.27 And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.
They stayed there with the disciples for some time.28 And there they abode long time with the disciples.
