NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
'We then turned on Bashan and invaded that. And Og king of Bashan marched out against us, he andal his people, to give battle at Edrei.1 Itaque conversi ascendimus per iter Basan; egressusque est Og rex Basan in occursum nobis cum omni populo suo ad bellandum in Edrai.
Yahweh said to me, "Do not be afraid of him, for I have put him at your mercy, him, al his people andhis country. You will treat him as you treated Sihon king of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon."2 Dixitque Dominus ad me: “Ne timeas eum, quia in manu tua tradidi eum cum omni populo ac terra sua; faciesque ei, sicut fecisti Sehon regi Amorraeorum, qui habitavit in Hesebon”.
So, Yahweh our God put Og king of Bashan at our mercy too, with al his people. We beat him sothoroughly that nobody was left.3 Tradidit ergo Dominus Deus noster in manibus nostris etiam Og regem Basan et universum populum eius; percussimusque eos usque ad internecionem.
That was when we captured al his towns; there was not a town of theirs we did not take: sixty towns,the whole confederation of Argob, Og's kingdom in Bashan,4 Et cepimus cunctas civitates eius in illo tempore. Non fuit oppidum, quod nos effugeret: sexaginta urbes, omnem regionem Argob, regnum Og in Basan.
all of them fortresses defended by high wal s and fortified with gates and bars, not to mention thePerizzite towns, which were very numerous.5 Cunctae urbes erant munitae muris altissimis portisque et vectibus, absque oppidis innumeris, quae non habebant muros.
We laid them under the curse of destruction as we had done Sihon king of Heshbon, laying al thesetowns under the curse of destruction: men, women and children-6 Et percussimus eos anathemate, sicut feceramus Sehon regi Hesebon, disperdentes omnem civitatem virosque ac mulieres et parvulos;
but we seized the livestock and spoils of the towns as booty for ourselves.7 iumenta autem et spolia urbium diripuimus.
'Thus, by then we had taken the country of the two Amorite kings beyond the Jordan, stretching fromthe Wadi Arnon to Mount Hermon8 Tulimusque illo in tempore terram de manu duorum regum Amorraeorum, qui erant trans Iordanem, a torrente Arnon usque ad montem Hermon
(the Sidonians call Hermon 'Sirion' and the Amorites cal it 'Senir'):9 — Sidonii vocant Hermon Sarion et Amorraei Sanir —
al the towns of the tableland, all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei, the capital citiesof Og in Bashan.10 omnes civitates, quae sitae sunt in planitie, et universam terram Galaad et Basan usque Salcha et Edrai, civitates regni Og in Basan.
(Og king of Bashan was the last survivor of the Rephaim; his bed was the iron bed that can be seen atRabbah-of-the-Ammonites, nine cubits long and four wide, according to the human cubit.)11 — Solus quippe Og rex Basan remanserat de residuis Raphaim. Monstratur lectus eius ferreus. Nonne est in Rabba filiorum Ammon? Novem cubitos habet longitudinis et quattuor latitudinis ad mensuram cubiti virilis manus C.
'Then we took possession of this country, from Aroer on the Wadi Arnon. To the Reubenites andGadites I gave half the highlands of Gilead with its towns.12 Terramque hanc possedimus in tempore illo ab Aroer, quae est super ripam torrentis Arnon, usque ad mediam partem montis Galaad; et civitates illius dedi Ruben et Gad.
To the half-tribe of Manasseh I gave the rest of Gilead and the whole of Bashan, Og's kingdom. (Thewhole confederation of Argob and the whole of Bashan is cal ed the country of the Rephaim.13 Reliquam autem partem Galaad et omnem Basan, regnum Og, tradidi mediae tribui Manasse, omnem regionem Argob. Cuncta Basan vocatur terra Raphaim.
Since Jair son of Manasseh occupied the whole confederation of Argob as far as the frontiers of theGeshurites and Maacathites, after him Bashan is called the Encampments of Jair even today.)14 Iair filius Manasse possedit omnem regionem Argob usque ad terminos Gesuri et Maachathi; vocavitque ea ex nomine suo Basan Havoth Iair (id est villas Iair) usque in praesentem diem.
To Machir I gave Gilead.15 Machir quoque dedi Galaad.
To the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the region from Gilead to the Wadi Arnon, the middle of theravine marking the boundary, and up as far as the Jabbok, the ravine marking the frontier of the Ammonites.16 Et tribubus Ruben et Gad dedi de terra Galaad usque ad torrentem Arnon, medium torrentis et confinium usque ad torrentem Iaboc, qui est terminus filiorum Ammon;
The Arabah and the Jordan serve as frontiers from Chinnereth down to the Sea of the Arabah (theSalt Sea), at the foot of the slopes of Pisgah on the east.17 et Arabam atque Iordanem et terminos a Chenereth usque ad mare Arabae, quod est mare Salis, ad radices montis Phasga contra orientem.
'I then gave you this order: "Yahweh your God has given you this country to be yours. Armed, everyone of you fit to fight must go ahead of your brothers the Israelites.18 Praecepique vobis in tempore illo dicens: Dominus Deus vester dedit vobis terram hanc in hereditatem; expediti praecedite fratres vestros filios Israel, omnes viri robusti,
Only your wives, your children and your flocks (you have many flocks, I know) must stay behind in thetowns which I have given you,19 absque uxoribus et parvulis ac iumentis. Novi enim quod plura habeatis pecora, et in urbibus remanere debebunt, quas tradidi vobis,
until Yahweh has brought your brothers to rest as he has already brought you, and they too possessthe territory which Yahweh your God is giving them on the other side of the Jordan; after that, you can go home,each to the domain I have given you."20 donec requiem tribuat Dominus fratribus vestris, sicut vobis tribuit, et possideant etiam ipsi terram, quam Dominus Deus vester daturus est eis trans Iordanem; tunc revertetur unusquisque in possessionem suam, quam dedi vobis.
I then gave Joshua this order, "You can see for yourself everything that Yahweh our God has done tothese two kings; Yahweh will do the same to al the kingdoms through which you pass.21 Iosue quoque in tempore illo praecepi dicens: Oculi tui viderunt, quae fecit Dominus Deus vester duobus his regibus; sic faciet omnibus regnis, ad quae transiturus es.
Do not be afraid of them: Yahweh your God himself is fighting for you."22 Ne timeas eos: Dominus enim Deus vester pugnabit pro vobis.
'I then pleaded with Yahweh.23 Precatusque sum Dominum in tempore illo dicens:
"My Lord Yahweh," I said, "now that you have begun to reveal your greatness and your power to yourservant with works and mighty deeds no God in heaven or on earth can rival,24 Domine Deus, tu coepisti ostendere servo tuo magnitudinem tuam manumque fortissimam; neque enim est alius Deus vel in caelo vel in terra, qui possit facere opera tua et comparari fortitudini tuae.
may I not go across and see this fine country on the other side of the Jordan, that fine upland countryand the Lebanon?"25 Transeam igitur et videam terram hanc optimam trans Iordanem et montem istum egregium et Libanum.
But, because of you, Yahweh was angry with me and would not listen. "Enough!" he said, "Do notmention this subject again!26 Iratusque est Dominus mihi propter vos nec exaudivit me, sed dixit mihi: “Sufficit tibi; nequaquam ultra loquaris de hac re ad me.
Climb to the top of Pisgah; turn your eyes to the west, the north, the south, the east. Look wel , foracross this Jordan you shall not go.27 Ascende cacumen Phasgae et oculos tuos circumfer ad occidentem et aquilonem austrumque et orientem et aspice; nec enim transibis Iordanem istum.
Give Joshua your instructions; encourage him, strengthen him; for he wil be the one to cross at thehead of this people; he wil be the one to bring them into possession of the country which you will see."28 Praecipe Iosue et corrobora eum atque conforta, quia ipse praecedet populum istum et dividet eis terram, quam visurus es”.
'We then stayed in the val ey, close to Beth-Peor.'29 Mansimusque in valle contra Bethphegor.
