Deuteronomy 3

NEW JERUSALEM	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 'We then turned on Bashan and invaded that. And Og king of Bashan marched out against us, he andal his people, to give battle at Edrei.	1 "Then we turned and proceeded toward Bashan. But Og, king of Bashan, advanced against us with all his people to give battle at Edrei.
2 Yahweh said to me, "Do not be afraid of him, for I have put him at your mercy, him, al his people andhis country. You will treat him as you treated Sihon king of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon."	2 The LORD, however, said to me, 'Do not be afraid of him, for I have delivered him into your hand with all his people and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.'
3 So, Yahweh our God put Og king of Bashan at our mercy too, with al his people. We beat him sothoroughly that nobody was left.	3 And thus the LORD, our God, delivered into our hands Og, king of Bashan, with all his people. We defeated him so completely that we left him no survivor.
4 That was when we captured al his towns; there was not a town of theirs we did not take: sixty towns,the whole confederation of Argob, Og's kingdom in Bashan,	4 At that time we captured all his cities, none of them eluding our grasp, the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan: sixty cities in all,
5 all of them fortresses defended by high wal s and fortified with gates and bars, not to mention thePerizzite towns, which were very numerous.	5 to say nothing of the great number of unwalled towns. All the cities were fortified with high walls and gates and bars.
6 We laid them under the curse of destruction as we had done Sihon king of Heshbon, laying al thesetowns under the curse of destruction: men, women and children-	6 As we had done to Sihon, king of Heshbon, so also here we doomed all the cities, with their men, women and children;
7 but we seized the livestock and spoils of the towns as booty for ourselves.	7 but all the livestock and the loot of each city we took as booty for ourselves.
8 'Thus, by then we had taken the country of the two Amorite kings beyond the Jordan, stretching fromthe Wadi Arnon to Mount Hermon	8 "And so at that time we took from the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan the territory from the Wadi Arnon to Mount Hermon
9 (the Sidonians call Hermon 'Sirion' and the Amorites cal it 'Senir'):	9 (which is called Sirion by the Sidonians and Senir by the Amorites),
10 al the towns of the tableland, all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei, the capital citiesof Og in Bashan.	10 comprising all the cities of the plateau and all Gilead and all the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan including Salecah and Edrei.
11 (Og king of Bashan was the last survivor of the Rephaim; his bed was the iron bed that can be seen atRabbah-of-the-Ammonites, nine cubits long and four wide, according to the human cubit.)	11 (Og, king of Bashan, was the last remaining survivor of the Rephaim. He had a bed of iron, nine regular cubits long and four wide, which is still preserved in Rabbah of the Ammonites.)
12 'Then we took possession of this country, from Aroer on the Wadi Arnon. To the Reubenites andGadites I gave half the highlands of Gilead with its towns.	12 "When we occupied the land at that time, I gave Reuben and Gad the territory from Aroer, on the edge of the Wadi Arnon, halfway up into the highlands of Gilead, with the cities therein.
13 To the half-tribe of Manasseh I gave the rest of Gilead and the whole of Bashan, Og's kingdom. (Thewhole confederation of Argob and the whole of Bashan is cal ed the country of the Rephaim.	13 The rest of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, the whole Argob region, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (All this region of Bashan was once called a land of the Rephaim.
14 Since Jair son of Manasseh occupied the whole confederation of Argob as far as the frontiers of theGeshurites and Maacathites, after him Bashan is called the Encampments of Jair even today.)	14 Jair, a Manassehite clan, took all the region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and called it after his own name Bashan Havvoth-jair, the name it bears today.)
15 To Machir I gave Gilead.	15 To Machir I gave Gilead,
16 To the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the region from Gilead to the Wadi Arnon, the middle of theravine marking the boundary, and up as far as the Jabbok, the ravine marking the frontier of the Ammonites.	16 and to Reuben and Gad the territory from Gilead to the Wadi Arnon--including the wadi bed and its banks--and to the Wadi Jabbok, which is the border of the Ammonites,
17 The Arabah and the Jordan serve as frontiers from Chinnereth down to the Sea of the Arabah (theSalt Sea), at the foot of the slopes of Pisgah on the east.	17 as well as the Arabah with the Jordan and its eastern banks from Chinnereth to the Salt Sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.
18 'I then gave you this order: "Yahweh your God has given you this country to be yours. Armed, everyone of you fit to fight must go ahead of your brothers the Israelites.	18 "At that time I charged them as follows 'The LORD, your God, has given you this land as your own. But all you troops equipped for battle must cross over in the vanguard of your brother Israelites.
19 Only your wives, your children and your flocks (you have many flocks, I know) must stay behind in thetowns which I have given you,	19 Only your wives and children, as well as your livestock, of which I know you have a large number, shall remain behind in the towns I have given you,
20 until Yahweh has brought your brothers to rest as he has already brought you, and they too possessthe territory which Yahweh your God is giving them on the other side of the Jordan; after that, you can go home,each to the domain I have given you."	20 until the LORD has settled your kinsmen as well, and they too possess the land which the LORD, your God, will give them on the other side of the Jordan. Then you may all return to the possessions I have given you.'
21 I then gave Joshua this order, "You can see for yourself everything that Yahweh our God has done tothese two kings; Yahweh will do the same to al the kingdoms through which you pass.	21 "It was then that I instructed Joshua, 'Your eyes have seen all that the LORD, your God, has done to both these kings; so, too, will the LORD do to all the kingdoms which you will encounter over there.
22 Do not be afraid of them: Yahweh your God himself is fighting for you."	22 Fear them not, for the LORD, your God, will fight for you.'
23 'I then pleaded with Yahweh.	23 "And it was then that I besought the LORD,
24 "My Lord Yahweh," I said, "now that you have begun to reveal your greatness and your power to yourservant with works and mighty deeds no God in heaven or on earth can rival,	24 'O Lord GOD, you have begun to show to your servant your greatness and might. For what god in heaven or on earth can perform deeds as mighty as yours?
25 may I not go across and see this fine country on the other side of the Jordan, that fine upland countryand the Lebanon?"	25 Ah, let me cross over and see this good land beyond the Jordan, this fine hill country, and the Lebanon!'
26 But, because of you, Yahweh was angry with me and would not listen. "Enough!" he said, "Do notmention this subject again!	26 But the LORD was angry with me on your account and would not hear me. 'Enough!' the LORD said to me. 'Speak to me no more of this.
27 Climb to the top of Pisgah; turn your eyes to the west, the north, the south, the east. Look wel , foracross this Jordan you shall not go.	27 Go up to the top of Pisgah and look out to the west, and to the north, and to the south, and to the east. Look well, for you shall not cross this Jordan.
28 Give Joshua your instructions; encourage him, strengthen him; for he wil be the one to cross at thehead of this people; he wil be the one to bring them into possession of the country which you will see."	28 Commission Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he shall cross at the head of this people and shall put them in possession of the land you are to see.'
29 'We then stayed in the val ey, close to Beth-Peor.'	29 This was while we were in the ravine opposite Beth-peor.
