NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
On the first day of the week, at the first sign of dawn, they went to the tomb with the spices they hadprepared.1 Prima autem sabbatorum, valde diluculo venerunt ad monumentum portantes,quae paraverant, aromata.
They found that the stone had been rol ed away from the tomb,2 Et invenerunt lapidem revolutum a monumento;
but on entering they could not find the body of the Lord Jesus.3 etingressae non invenerunt corpus Domini Iesu.
As they stood there puzzled about this, two men in bril iant clothes suddenly appeared at their side.4 Et factum est, dum mentehaesitarent de isto, ecce duo viri steterunt secus illas in veste fulgenti.
Terrified, the women bowed their heads to the ground. But the two said to them, 'Why look among thedead for someone who is alive?5 Cum timerent autem et declinarent vultum in terram, dixerunt ad illas: “ Quidquaeritis viventem cum mortuis?
He is not here; he has risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee:6 Non est hic, sed surrexit. Recordaminiqualiter locutus est vobis, cum adhuc in Galilaea esset,
that the Son of man was destined to be handed over into the power of sinful men and be crucified, andrise again on the third day.'7 dicens: “OportetFilium hominis tradi in manus hominum peccatorum et crucifigi et die tertiaresurgere” ”.
And they remembered his words.8 Et recordatae sunt verborum eius
And they returned from the tomb and told al this to the Eleven and to al the others.9 et regressae a monumentonuntiaverunt haec omnia illis Undecim et ceteris omnibus.
The women were Mary of Magdala, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. And the other womenwith them also told the apostles,10 Erat autem MariaMagdalene et Ioanna et Maria Iacobi; et ceterae cum eis dicebant ad apostoloshaec.
but this story of theirs seemed pure nonsense, and they did not believe them.11 Et visa sunt ante illos sicut deliramentum verba ista, et non credebantillis.
Peter, however, went off to the tomb, running. He bent down and looked in and saw the linen clothsbut nothing else; he then went back home, amazed at what had happened.12 Petrus autem surgens cucurrit ad monumentum et procumbens videtlinteamina sola; et rediit ad sua mirans, quod factum fuerat.
Now that very same day, two of them were on their way to a vil age cal ed Emmaus, seven miles fromJerusalem,13 Et ecce duo ex illis ibant ipsa die in castellum, quod erat in spatiostadiorum sexaginta ab Ierusalem nomine Emmaus;
and they were talking together about al that had happened.14 et ipsi loquebantur adinvicem de his omnibus, quae acciderant.
And it happened that as they were talking together and discussing it, Jesus himself came up andwalked by their side;15 Et factum est, dum fabularentur etsecum quaererent, et ipse Iesus appropinquans ibat cum illis;
but their eyes were prevented from recognising him.16 oculi autemillorum tenebantur, ne eum agnoscerent.
He said to them, 'What are all these things that you are discussing as you walk along?' They stopped,their faces downcast.17 Et ait ad illos: “ Qui sunt hisermones, quos confertis ad invicem ambulantes? ”. Et steterunt tristes.
Then one of them, called Cleopas, answered him, 'You must be the only person staying in Jerusalemwho does not know the things that have been happening there these last few days.'18 Etrespondens unus, cui nomen Cleopas, dixit ei: “ Tu solus peregrinus es inIerusalem et non cognovisti, quae facta sunt in illa his diebus? ”.
He asked, 'What things?' They answered, 'Al about Jesus of Nazareth, who showed himself aprophet powerful in action and speech before God and the whole people;19 Quibusille dixit: “ Quae? ”. Et illi dixerunt ei: “ De Iesu Nazareno, qui fuitvir propheta, potens in opere et sermone coram Deo et omni populo;
and how our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and had himcrucified.20 et quomodoeum tradiderunt summi sacerdotes et principes nostri in damnationem mortis etcrucifixerunt eum.
Our own hope had been that he would be the one to set Israel free. And this is not al : two whole dayshave now gone by since it al happened;21 Nos autem sperabamus, quia ipse esset redempturus Israel;at nunc super haec omnia tertia dies hodie quod haec facta sunt.
and some women from our group have astounded us: they went to the tomb in the early morning,22 Sed etmulieres quaedam ex nostris terruerunt nos, quae ante lucem fuerunt admonumentum
and when they could not find the body, they came back to tel us they had seen a vision of angelswho declared he was alive.23 et, non invento corpore eius, venerunt dicentes se etiam visionemangelorum vidisse, qui dicunt eum vivere.
Some of our friends went to the tomb and found everything exactly as the women had reported, but ofhim they saw nothing.'24 Et abierunt quidam ex nostris admonumentum et ita invenerunt, sicut mulieres dixerunt, ipsum vero non viderunt”.
Then he said to them, 'You foolish men! So slow to believe al that the prophets have said!25 Et ipse dixit ad eos: “ O stulti et tardi corde ad credendum in omnibus,quae locuti sunt Prophetae!
Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer before entering into his glory?'26 Nonne haec oportuit pati Christum et intrare ingloriam suam? ”.
Then, starting with Moses and going through al the prophets, he explained to them the passagesthroughout the scriptures that were about himself.27 Et incipiens a Moyse et omnibus Prophetis interpretabaturillis in omnibus Scripturis, quae de ipso erant.
When they drew near to the vil age to which they were going, he made as if to go on;28 Et appropinquaveruntcastello, quo ibant, et ipse se finxit longius ire.
but they pressed him to stay with them saying, 'It is nearly evening, and the day is almost over.' So hewent in to stay with them.29 Et coegerunt illumdicentes: “ Mane nobiscum, quoniam advesperascit, et inclinata est iam dies”. Et intravit, ut maneret cum illis.
Now while he was with them at table, he took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it andhanded it to them.30 Et factum est, dum recumberet cumillis, accepit panem et benedixit ac fregit et porrigebat illis.
And their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he had vanished from their sight.31 Et apertisunt oculi eorum, et cognoverunt eum; et ipse evanuit ab eis.
Then they said to each other, 'Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road andexplained the scriptures to us?'32 Et dixerunt adinvicem: “ Nonne cor nostrum ardens erat in nobis, dum loqueretur nobis in viaet aperiret nobis Scripturas? ”.
They set out that instant and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven assembled togetherwith their companions,33 Et surgentes eadem hora regressi sunt inIerusalem et invenerunt congregatos Undecim et eos, qui cum ipsis erant,
who said to them, 'The Lord has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon.'34 dicentes: “ Surrexit Dominus vere et apparuit Simoni ”.
Then they told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised him at thebreaking of bread.35 Et ipsinarrabant, quae gesta erant in via, et quomodo cognoverunt eum in fractionepanis.
They were still talking about al this when he himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace bewith you!'36 Dum haec autem loquuntur, ipse stetit in medio eorum et dicit eis: “ Paxvobis! ”.
In a state of alarm and fright, they thought they were seeing a ghost.37 Conturbati vero et conterriti existimabant se spiritum videre.
But he said, 'Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts stirring in your hearts?38 Et dixit eis: “ Quid turbati estis, et quare cogitationes ascendunt in cordavestra?
See by my hands and my feet that it is I myself. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has noflesh and bones as you can see I have.'39 Videte manus meas et pedes meos, quia ipse ego sum! Palpate me etvidete, quia spiritus carnem et ossa non habet, sicut me videtis habere ”.
And as he said this he showed them his hands and his feet.40 Et cum hoc dixisset, ostendit eis manus et pedes.
Their joy was so great that they stil could not believe it, as they were dumbfounded; so he said tothem, 'Have you anything here to eat?'41 Adhuc autem illis noncredentibus prae gaudio et mirantibus, dixit eis: “ Habetis hic aliquid, quodmanducetur? ”.
And they offered him a piece of gril ed fish,42 At illi obtulerunt ei partem piscis assi.
which he took and ate before their eyes.43 Et sumens,coram eis manducavit.
Then he told them, 'This is what I meant when I said, while I was stil with you, that everything writtenabout me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms, was destined to be fulfilled.'44 Et dixit ad eos: “ Haec sunt verba, quae locutus sum ad vos, cum adhucessem vobiscum, quoniam necesse est impleri omnia, quae scripta sunt in LegeMoysis et Prophetis et Psalmis de me ”.
He then opened their minds to understand the scriptures,45 Tunc aperuit illis sensum, utintellegerent Scripturas.
and he said to them, 'So it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from thedead,46 Et dixit eis: “ Sic scriptum est, Christum patiet resurgere a mortuis die tertia,
and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to al nations,beginning from Jerusalem.47 et praedicari in nomine eius paenitentiamin remissionem peccatorum in omnes gentes, incipientibus ab Ierusalem.
You are witnesses to this.48 Vosestis testes horum.
'And now I am sending upon you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city, then, until you areclothed with the power from on high.'49 Et ecce ego mitto promissum Patris mei in vos; vos autemsedete in civitate, quoadusque induamini virtutem ex alto ”.
Then he took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and raising his hands he blessed them.50 Eduxit autem eos foras usque in Bethaniam et, elevatis manibus suis,benedixit eis.
Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven.51 Et factum est, dum benediceret illis, recessit ab eis etferebatur in caelum.
They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem ful of joy;52 Et ipsi adoraverunt eum et regressi sunt in Ierusalemcum gaudio magno
and they were continually in the Temple praising God.53 et erant semper in templo benedicentes Deum.
