Luke 24

NEW JERUSALEM	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 On the first day of the week, at the first sign of dawn, they went to the tomb with the spices they hadprepared.	1 And on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared.
2 They found that the stone had been rol ed away from the tomb,	2 And they found the stone rolled back from the sepulchre.
3 but on entering they could not find the body of the Lord Jesus.	3 And going in, they found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 As they stood there puzzled about this, two men in bril iant clothes suddenly appeared at their side.	4 And it came to pass, as they were astonished in their mind at this, behold, two men stood by them, in shining apparel.
5 Terrified, the women bowed their heads to the ground. But the two said to them, 'Why look among thedead for someone who is alive?	5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their countenance towards the ground, they said unto them: Why seek you the living with the dead?
6 He is not here; he has risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee:	6 He is not here, but is risen. Remember how he spoke unto you, when he was in Galilee,
7 that the Son of man was destined to be handed over into the power of sinful men and be crucified, andrise again on the third day.'	7 Saying: The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
8 And they remembered his words.	8 And they remembered his words.
9 And they returned from the tomb and told al this to the Eleven and to al the others.	9 And going back from the sepulchre, they told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.
10 The women were Mary of Magdala, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. And the other womenwith them also told the apostles,	10 And it was Mary Magdalen, and Joanna, and Mary of James, and the other women that were with them, who told these things to the apostles.
11 but this story of theirs seemed pure nonsense, and they did not believe them.	11 And these words seemed to them as idle tales; and they did not believe them.
12 Peter, however, went off to the tomb, running. He bent down and looked in and saw the linen clothsbut nothing else; he then went back home, amazed at what had happened.	12 But Peter rising up, ran to the sepulchre, and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths laid by themselves; and went away wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.
13 Now that very same day, two of them were on their way to a vil age cal ed Emmaus, seven miles fromJerusalem,	13 And behold, two of them went, the same day, to a town which was sixty furlongs from Jerusalem, named Emmaus.
14 and they were talking together about al that had happened.	14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
15 And it happened that as they were talking together and discussing it, Jesus himself came up andwalked by their side;	15 And it came to pass, that while they talked and reasoned with themselves, Jesus himself also drawing near, went with them.
16 but their eyes were prevented from recognising him.	16 But their eyes were held, that they should not know him.
17 He said to them, 'What are all these things that you are discussing as you walk along?' They stopped,their faces downcast.	17 And he said to them: What are these discourses that you hold one with another as you walk, and are sad?
18 Then one of them, called Cleopas, answered him, 'You must be the only person staying in Jerusalemwho does not know the things that have been happening there these last few days.'	18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleophas, answering, said to him: Art thou only a stranger to Jerusalem, and hast not known the things that have been done there in these days?
19 He asked, 'What things?' They answered, 'Al about Jesus of Nazareth, who showed himself aprophet powerful in action and speech before God and the whole people;	19 To whom he said: What things? And they said: Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, mighty in work and word before God and all the people;
20 and how our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and had himcrucified.	20 And how our chief priests and princes delivered him to be condemned to death, and crucified him.
21 Our own hope had been that he would be the one to set Israel free. And this is not al : two whole dayshave now gone by since it al happened;	21 But we hoped, that it was he that should have redeemed Israel: and now besides all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
22 and some women from our group have astounded us: they went to the tomb in the early morning,	22 Yea and certain women also of our company affrighted us, who before it was light, were at the sepulchre,
23 and when they could not find the body, they came back to tel us they had seen a vision of angelswho declared he was alive.	23 And not finding his body, came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who say that he is alive.
24 Some of our friends went to the tomb and found everything exactly as the women had reported, but ofhim they saw nothing.'	24 And some of our people went to the sepulchre, and found it so as the women had said, but him they found not.
25 Then he said to them, 'You foolish men! So slow to believe al that the prophets have said!	25 Then he said to them: O foolish, and slow of heart to believe in all things which the prophets have spoken.
26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer before entering into his glory?'	26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and so to enter into his glory?
27 Then, starting with Moses and going through al the prophets, he explained to them the passagesthroughout the scriptures that were about himself.	27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures, the things that were concerning him.
28 When they drew near to the vil age to which they were going, he made as if to go on;	28 And they drew night to the town, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go farther.
29 but they pressed him to stay with them saying, 'It is nearly evening, and the day is almost over.' So hewent in to stay with them.	29 But they constrained him; saying: Stay with us, because it is towards evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in with them.
30 Now while he was with them at table, he took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it andhanded it to them.	30 And it came to pass, whilst he was at table with them, he took bread, and blessed, and brake, and gave to them.
31 And their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he had vanished from their sight.	31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him: and he vanished out of their sight.
32 Then they said to each other, 'Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road andexplained the scriptures to us?'	32 And they said one to the other: Was not our heart burning within us, whilst he spoke in this way, and opened to us the scriptures?
33 They set out that instant and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven assembled togetherwith their companions,	33 And rising up, the same hour, they went back to Jerusalem: and they found the eleven gathered together, and those that were staying with them,
34 who said to them, 'The Lord has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon.'	34 Saying: The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
35 Then they told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised him at thebreaking of bread.	35 And they told what things were done in the way; and how they knew him in the breaking of the bread.
36 They were still talking about al this when he himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace bewith you!'	36 Now whilst they were speaking these things, Jesus stood in the midst of them, and saith to them: Peace be to you; it is I, fear not.
37 In a state of alarm and fright, they thought they were seeing a ghost.	37 But they being troubled and frightened, supposed that they saw a spirit.
38 But he said, 'Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts stirring in your hearts?	38 And he said to them: Why are you troubled, and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
39 See by my hands and my feet that it is I myself. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has noflesh and bones as you can see I have.'	39 See my hands and feet, that it is I myself; handle, and see: for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as you see me to have.
40 And as he said this he showed them his hands and his feet.	40 And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and feet.
41 Their joy was so great that they stil could not believe it, as they were dumbfounded; so he said tothem, 'Have you anything here to eat?'	41 But while they yet believed not, and wondered for joy, he said: Have you any thing to eat?
42 And they offered him a piece of gril ed fish,	42 And they offered him a piece of a broiled fish, and a honeycomb.
43 which he took and ate before their eyes.	43 And when he had eaten before them, taking the remains, he gave to them.
44 Then he told them, 'This is what I meant when I said, while I was stil with you, that everything writtenabout me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms, was destined to be fulfilled.'	44 And he said to them: These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
45 He then opened their minds to understand the scriptures,	45 Then he opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.
46 and he said to them, 'So it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from thedead,	46 And he said to them: Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead, the third day:
47 and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to al nations,beginning from Jerusalem.	47 And that penance and remission of sins should be preached in his name, unto all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 You are witnesses to this.	48 And you are witnesses of these things.
49 'And now I am sending upon you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city, then, until you areclothed with the power from on high.'	49 And I send the promise of my Father upon you: but stay you in the city till you be endued with power from on high.
50 Then he took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and raising his hands he blessed them.	50 And he led them out as far as Bethania: and lifting up his hands, he blessed them.
51 Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven.	51 And it came to pass, whilst he blessed them, he departed from them, and was carried up to heaven.
52 They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem ful of joy;	52 And they adoring went back into Jerusalem with great joy.
53 and they were continually in the Temple praising God.	53 And they were always in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
