NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
As he was leaving the Temple one of his disciples said to him, 'Master, look at the size of thosestones! Look at the size of those buildings!'1 Et cum egrederetur de templo, ait illi unus ex discipulis suis : Magister, aspice quales lapides, et quales structuræ.
And Jesus said to him, 'You see these great buildings? Not a single stone wil be left on another;everything wil be pul ed down.'2 Et respondens Jesus, ait illi : Vides has omnes magnas ædificationes ? Non relinquetur lapis super lapidem, qui non destruatur.
And while he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, facing the Temple, Peter, James, John and Andrewquestioned him when they were by themselves,3 Et cum sederet in monte Olivarum contra templum, interrogabant eum separatim Petrus, et Jacobus, et Joannes, et Andreas :
'Tel us, when is this going to happen, and what sign wil there be that it is all about to take place?'4 Dic nobis, quando ista fient ? et quod signum erit, quando hæc omnia incipient consummari ?
Then Jesus began to tel them, 'Take care that no one deceives you.5 Et respondens Jesus cœpit dicere illis : Videte ne quis vos seducat :
Many wil come using my name and saying, "I am he," and they wil deceive many.6 multi enim venient in nomine meo, dicentes quia ego sum : et multos seducent.
When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this is something that must happen, but the end wil not be yet.7 Cum audieritis autem bella, et opiniones bellorum, ne timueritis : oportet enim hæc fieri : sed nondum finis.
For nation wil fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There wil be earthquakes in variousplaces; there wil be famines. This is the beginning of the birth-pangs.8 Exsurget enim gens contra gentem, et regnum super regnum, et erunt terræmotus per loca, et fames. Initium dolorum hæc.
'Be on your guard: you wil be handed over to sanhedrins; you wil be beaten in synagogues; and you wil be brought before governors and kings for my sake, as evidence to them,9 Videte autem vosmetipsos. Tradent enim vos in consiliis, et in synagogis vapulabitis, et ante præsides et reges stabitis propter me, in testimonium illis.
since the gospel must first be proclaimed to al nations.10 Et in omnes gentes primum oportet prædicari Evangelium.
'And when you are taken to be handed over, do not worry beforehand about what to say; no, saywhatever is given to you when the time comes, because it is not you who wil be speaking; it is the Holy Spirit.11 Et cum duxerint vos tradentes, nolite præcogitare quid loquamini : sed quod datum vobis fuerit in illa hora, id loquimini : non enim vos estis loquentes, sed Spiritus Sanctus.
Brother wil betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will come forward against theirparents and have them put to death.12 Tradet autem frater fratrem in mortem, et pater filium : et consurgent filii in parentes, et morte afficient eos.
You wil be universal y hated on account of my name; but anyone who stands firm to the end wil besaved.13 Et eritis odio omnibus propter nomen meum. Qui autem sustinuerit in finem, hic salvus erit.
'When you see the appal ing abomination set up where it ought not to be (let the reader understand),then those in Judaea must escape to the mountains;14 Cum autem videritis abominationem desolationis stantem, ubi non debet, qui legit, intelligat : tunc qui in Judæa sunt, fugiant in montes :
if a man is on the housetop, he must not come down or go inside to col ect anything from his house;15 et qui super tectum, ne descendat in domum, nec introëat ut tollat quid de domo sua :
if a man is in the fields, he must not turn back to fetch his cloak.16 et qui in agro erit, non revertatur retro tollere vestimentum suum.
Alas for those with child, or with babies at the breast, when those days come!17 Væ autem prægnantibus et nutrientibus in illis diebus.
Pray that this may not be in winter.18 Orate vero ut hieme non fiant.
For in those days there will be great distress, unparalleled since God created the world, and such aswil never be again.19 Erunt enim dies illi tribulationes tales quales non fuerunt ab initio creaturæ, quam condidit Deus usque nunc, neque fient.
And if the Lord had not shortened that time, no human being would have survived; but he did shortenthe time, for the sake of the elect whom he chose.20 Et nisi breviasset Dominus dies, non fuisset salva omnis caro : sed propter electos, quos elegit, breviavit dies.
'And if anyone says to you then, "Look, here is the Christ" or, "Look, he is there," do not believe it;21 Et tunc si quis vobis dixerit : Ecce hic est Christus, ecce illic, ne credideritis.
for false Christs and false prophets wil arise and produce signs and portents to deceive the elect, ifthat were possible.22 Exsurgent enim pseudochristi et pseudoprophetæ, et dabunt signa et portenta ad seducendos, si fieri potest, etiam electos.
You, therefore, must be on your guard. I have given you full warning.23 Vos ergo videte : ecce prædixi vobis omnia.
'But in those days, after that time of distress, the sun wil be darkened, the moon wil not give its light,24 Sed in illis diebus, post tribulationem illam, sol contenebrabitur, et luna non dabit splendorem suum :
the stars will come falling out of the sky and the powers in the heavens wil be shaken.25 et stellæ cæli erunt decidentes, et virtutes, quæ in cælis sunt, movebuntur.
And then they wil see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.26 Et tunc videbunt Filium hominis venientem in nubibus cum virtute multa et gloria.
And then he wil send the angels to gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the world tothe ends of the sky.27 Et tunc mittet angelos suos, et congregabit electos suos a quatuor ventis, a summo terræ usque ad summum cæli.
'Take the fig tree as a parable: as soon as its twigs grow supple and its leaves come out, you knowthat summer is near.28 A ficu autem discite parabolam. Cum jam ramus ejus tener fuerit, et nata fuerint folia, cognoscitis quia in proximo sit æstas :
So with you when you see these things happening: know that he is near, right at the gates.29 sic et vos cum videritis hæc fieri, scitote quod in proximo sit, in ostiis.
In truth I tel you, before this generation has passed away al these things will have taken place.30 Amen dico vobis, quoniam non transibit generatio hæc, donec omnia ista fiant.
Sky and earth wil pass away, but my words wil not pass away.31 Cælum et terra transibunt, verba autem mea non transibunt.
'But as for that day or hour, nobody knows it, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son; no one butthe Father.32 De die autem illo vel hora nemo scit, neque angeli in cælo, neque Filius, nisi Pater.
'Be on your guard, stay awake, because you never know when the time wil come.33 Videte, vigilate, et orate : nescitis enim quando tempus sit.
It is like a man travel ing abroad: he has gone from his home, and left his servants in charge, eachwith his own work to do; and he has told the doorkeeper to stay awake.34 Sicut homo qui peregre profectus reliquit domum suam, et dedit servis suis potestatem cujusque operis, et janitori præcepit ut vigilet,
So stay awake, because you do not know when the master of the house is coming, evening, midnight, cockcrow or dawn;35 vigilate ergo (nescitis enim quando dominus domus veniat : sero, an media nocte, an galli cantu, an mane),
if he comes unexpectedly, he must not find you asleep.36 ne, cum venerit repente, inveniat vos dormientes.
And what I am saying to you I say to al : Stay awake!'37 Quod autem vobis dico, omnibus dico : Vigilate.
