1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	1 E il popolo partì da Haserot e piantò le tende nel deserto di Faran,
2 'Send out men, one from each tribe, to reconnoitre the land of Canaan which I am giving theIsraelites. Each of them is to be a leading man of the tribe.'	2 ove il Signore parlò a Mosè dicendo:
3 At Yahweh's order, Moses sent them from the desert of Paran. All of them were leading men of Israel.	3 « Manda degli uomini, uno dei principali per ogni tribù, ad esplorare la terra di Canaan che io darò ai figli d'Israele ».
4 These were their names: For the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur:	4 Mosè, eseguendo l'ordine del Signore, mandò, dal deserto di Faran, degli uomini fra i principali. Eccone i nomi:
5 for the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;	5 della tribù di Ruben, Sammua figlio di Zecur;
6 for the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;	6 della tribù di Simeone, Safat figlio di Huri;
7 for the tribe of of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;	7 della tribù di Giuda, Caleb figlio di Iefone;
8 for the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;	8 della tribù d'Issacar, Igal figlio di Giuseppe;
9 for the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;	9 della tribù di Efraim, Osee figlio di Nun;
10 for the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;	10 della tribù di Beniamino, Falti figlio di Rafu;
11 for the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi;	11 della tribù di Zàbulon, Geddiel figlio di Sodi;
12 for the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemal i;	12 della tribù di Giuseppe, cioè di Manasse, Gaddi figlio di Susi;
13 for the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;	13 della tribù di Dan, Ammiel figlio di Gemalli;
14 for the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;	14 della tribù di Aser, Stur figlio di Michele;
15 for the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi.	15 della tribù di Nettali, Nahabi, figlio di Vapsi;
16 Such were the names of the men whom Moses sent to reconnoitre the country. Moses then gaveHoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.	16 della tribù di Gad, Guel figlio di Machi.
17 Moses sent them to reconnoitre the land of Canaan, 'Go up into the Negeb,' he said, 'then go up intothe highlands.	17 Questi sono i nomi degli uomini che Mosè mandò ad esplorare la terra; ad Osee figlio di Nun diede il nome di Giosuè.
18 See what sort of country it is, and what sort of people the inhabitants are, whether they are strong orweak, few or many,	18 Mosè adunque li mandò ad esplorare la terra di Canaan, e disse loro: « Salite dalla parte meridionale, e, giunti alle montagne,
19 what sort of land they live on, whether it is good or poor; what sort of towns they live in, whether theyare open or fortified;	19 guardate che paese sia, che popolo vi abiti, se forte o debole, poco o molto numeroso;
20 what sort of land it is, fertile or barren, wooded or open. Be bold, and bring back some of thecountry's produce.' It was the season for early grapes.	20 come sia la terra, se buona o cattiva, come siano le città, se fortificate o senza mura;
21 They went up and reconnoitred the country from the desert of Zin to Rehob, the Pass of Hamath.	21 come sia il terreno, se grasso o sterile, selvoso o senza alberi. Siate coraggiosi, e portateci dei frutti della terra ». Era allora il tempo in cui potevano assaggiarsi le uve primaticce.
22 They went up by way of the Negeb as far as Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, theAnakim, lived. (Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis in Egypt.)	22 Quelli partirono, ed esplorarono la terra dal deserto di Sin fino a Rohob, al varco di Emat.
23 Reaching the Vale of Eshcol, there they lopped off a vine branch with a cluster of grapes, which twoof them carried away on a pole, as wel as pomegranates and figs.	23 Saliti dalla parte meridionale, giunsero ad Ebron, dove erano Achiman, Sisai e Tolmai figli di Enac. Ebron fu edificata sette anni prima di Tanim, città dell'Egitto.
24 This place was called the Vale of Eshcol after the cluster which the Israelites cut there.	24 Giunti al Torrente del Grappolo, tagliarono un tralcio col suo grappolo e lo portarono in due appeso ad una stanga. Portarono anche delle melagrane e dei fichi di quel luogo
25 After forty days they returned from reconnoitring the country.	25 che fu chiamato Nehelescol, cioè Torrente del Grappolo, perchè i figli d'Israele vi avevan preso quel grappolo.
26 Making their way to Moses, Aaron and the whole community of Israel, in the desert of Paran, atKadesh, they made their report to them and the whole community, and displayed the country's produce.	26 Dopo quaranta giorni, avendo scorso tutto il paese, gli esploratori tornarono,
27 This was the report they gave: 'We made our way into the country where you sent us. It does indeedflow with milk and honey; here is what it produces.	27 e andarono a trovare Mosè, Aronne e tutta l'assemblea dei figli d'Israele a Cades, nel deserto di Faran. Dopo aver parlato loro e a, tutta la moltitudine, mostrarono i frutti della terra,
28 At the same time, its inhabitants are a powerful people; the towns are fortified and very big; yes, andwe saw the Anakim there.	28 se fecero il loro racconto, dicendo: « Siamo andati nel paese dove ci mandasti; e questa veramente stilla latte e miele, come si può vedere da questi frutti;
29 The Amalekites occupy the Negeb area, the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites the highlands, and theCanaanites the sea coast and the banks of the Jordan.'	29 ma il suo popolo è fortissimo, le sue città sono grandi e fortificate. Vi abbiamo veduto la stirpe di Enac.
30 Caleb called the people round Moses to silence and then said, 'We must march in immediately andtake it; we are certainly able to conquer it.'	30 Amalec abita al mezzodì; l'Eteo, il Gebuseo e l'Amorreo sulle montagne; il Cananeo invece abita pressò il mare e lungo il Giordano ».
31 But the men who had been with him said, 'We cannot attack these people; they are stronger than weare.'	31 Allora Caleb, per sedare il rumore che già si levava nel popolo contro Mose, disse: « Andiamo a prender possesso di quella terra: la conquisteremo certamente ».
32 And they began disparaging to the Israelites the country they had reconnoitred, saying, 'The countrywe have been to reconnoitre is a country that devours its inhabitants. Al the people we saw there were ofenormous size.	32 Ma gli altri che erano andati con lui dicevano: « E impossibile salire contro quel popolo: è più forte di noi ».
33 We saw giants there too (the Anakim, descended from the Giants). We felt like grasshoppers, andso we seemed to them.'	33 E, screditando davantiai figli d'Israele la terra che avevano esplorata, dicevano: « La terra da noi attraversata divora i suoi abitanti; il popolo che abbiamo veduto è di grande statura;
	34 vi abbiamo veduto certi mostri dei figli di Enac, della razza dei giganti, paragonati ai quali noi si pareva delle locuste ».
