Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,1 And the people set out from Hazeroth, and they pitched their tents in the desert of Paran.
'Send out men, one from each tribe, to reconnoitre the land of Canaan which I am giving theIsraelites. Each of them is to be a leading man of the tribe.'2 And there, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
At Yahweh's order, Moses sent them from the desert of Paran. All of them were leading men of Israel.3 “Send men, who may examine the land of Canaan, which I will give to the sons of Israel, one from the rulers of each tribe.”
These were their names: For the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur:4 Moses did what the Lord had commanded, sending, from the desert of Paran, leading men, whose names are these:
for the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;5 from the tribe of Ruben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;
for the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;6 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;
for the tribe of of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;7 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
for the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;8 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;
for the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;9 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hosea the son of Nun;
for the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;10 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;
for the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi;11 from the tribe of Zebulon, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;
for the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemal i;12 from the tribe of Joseph, of the scepter of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;
for the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;13 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;
for the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;14 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;
for the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi.15 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;
Such were the names of the men whom Moses sent to reconnoitre the country. Moses then gaveHoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.16 from the tribe of Gad, Guel the son of Machi.
Moses sent them to reconnoitre the land of Canaan, 'Go up into the Negeb,' he said, 'then go up intothe highlands.17 These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to examine the land. And he called Hosea, the son of Nun, Joshua.
See what sort of country it is, and what sort of people the inhabitants are, whether they are strong orweak, few or many,18 And so, Moses sent them to examine the land of Canaan, and he said to them: “Ascend by the south side. And when you arrive at the mountains,
what sort of land they live on, whether it is good or poor; what sort of towns they live in, whether theyare open or fortified;19 consider the land, as to what kind it may be, and the people, who are its inhabitants, whether they may be strong or weak, whether they may be few in number or many,
what sort of land it is, fertile or barren, wooded or open. Be bold, and bring back some of thecountry's produce.' It was the season for early grapes.20 and the land itself, whether it is good or bad, what kind of cities, walled or without walls,
They went up and reconnoitred the country from the desert of Zin to Rehob, the Pass of Hamath.21 the soil, rich or barren, forested or without trees. Be strong, and bring us some of the fruits of the land.” Now it was the time when the first ripe grapes were ready to be eaten.
They went up by way of the Negeb as far as Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, theAnakim, lived. (Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis in Egypt.)22 And when they had ascended, they explored the land from the desert of Sin, all the way to Rehob, as one enters into Hamath.
Reaching the Vale of Eshcol, there they lopped off a vine branch with a cluster of grapes, which twoof them carried away on a pole, as wel as pomegranates and figs.23 And they ascended by the south side. And they arrived at Hebron, where there were Ahiman and Shishai and Talmai, the sons of Anak. For Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis, the city of Egypt.
This place was called the Vale of Eshcol after the cluster which the Israelites cut there.24 And continuing on as far as the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, they cut off a vine with its grapes, which two men carried on a board. Likewise, they took from the pomegranates and the figs of that place,
After forty days they returned from reconnoitring the country.25 which was called Nehel Eshcol, that is, the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, because the sons of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes from there.
Making their way to Moses, Aaron and the whole community of Israel, in the desert of Paran, atKadesh, they made their report to them and the whole community, and displayed the country's produce.26 And those exploring the land returned after forty days, having circulated through the entire region.
This was the report they gave: 'We made our way into the country where you sent us. It does indeedflow with milk and honey; here is what it produces.27 And they went to Moses and Aaron, and to the entire assembly of the sons of Israel in the desert of Paran, which is in Kadesh. And speaking to them, and to the entire multitude, they showed them the fruits of the land.
At the same time, its inhabitants are a powerful people; the towns are fortified and very big; yes, andwe saw the Anakim there.28 And they explained, saying: “We went into the land, to which you sent us, which, it is true, flows with milk and honey, as one can know by these fruits.
The Amalekites occupy the Negeb area, the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites the highlands, and theCanaanites the sea coast and the banks of the Jordan.'29 But it has very strong occupants, and the cities are great and also walled. We saw the race of Anak there.
Caleb called the people round Moses to silence and then said, 'We must march in immediately andtake it; we are certainly able to conquer it.'30 Amalek lives in the south. The Hethite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite live in the mountains. And truly, the Canaanite stays near the sea and around the streams of the Jordan.”
But the men who had been with him said, 'We cannot attack these people; they are stronger than weare.'31 During these events, Caleb, to restrain the murmuring of the people who rose up against Moses, said, “Let us ascend and possess the land, for we will be able to obtain it.”
And they began disparaging to the Israelites the country they had reconnoitred, saying, 'The countrywe have been to reconnoitre is a country that devours its inhabitants. Al the people we saw there were ofenormous size.32 Yet truly, the others, who had been with him, were saying, “By no means are we able to ascend to this people, because they are stronger than we are.”
We saw giants there too (the Anakim, descended from the Giants). We felt like grasshoppers, andso we seemed to them.'33 And before the sons of Israel they disparaged the land, which they had inspected, saying: “The land, which we viewed, devours its inhabitants. The people, upon whom we gazed, were of lofty stature.
There, we saw some monsters among the sons of Anak, of the race of giants; by comparison with them, we seemed like locusts.”
