NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	1 Il Signore disse a Mosè:
2 'Send out men, one from each tribe, to reconnoitre the land of Canaan which I am giving theIsraelites. Each of them is to be a leading man of the tribe.'	2 "Manda uomini a esplorare la terra di Canaan, che io voglio dare ai figli d'Israele; ne invierete uno per ogni tribù dei loro padri, tutti dei loro capi".
3 At Yahweh's order, Moses sent them from the desert of Paran. All of them were leading men of Israel.	3 Mosè li inviò dal deserto di Paran, secondo le parole del Signore: erano tutti capi dei figli d'Israele.
4 These were their names: For the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur:	4 Questi sono i loro nomi: per la tribù di Ruben Sammua, figlio di Zaccur;
5 for the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;	5 per la tribù di Simeone Safat, figlio di Cori;
6 for the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;	6 per la tribù di Giuda Caleb, figlio di Iefunne;
7 for the tribe of of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;	7 per la tribù di Issacar Igheal, figlio di Giuseppe;

16 Such were the names of the men whom Moses sent to reconnoitre the country. Moses then gaveHoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.	16 Questi sono i nomi degli uomini che Mosè inviò a esplorare la terra. Mosè diede ad Osea, figlio di Nun, il nome di Giosuè.
17 Moses sent them to reconnoitre the land of Canaan, 'Go up into the Negeb,' he said, 'then go up intothe highlands.	17 Mosè li inviò ad esplorare la terra di Canaan e disse loro: "Salite per il Negheb, e salite sulla montagna,
18 See what sort of country it is, and what sort of people the inhabitants are, whether they are strong orweak, few or many,	18 per vedere la terra com'è e il popolo che vi abita, se forte o debole, poco o molto;
19 what sort of land they live on, whether it is good or poor; what sort of towns they live in, whether theyare open or fortified;	19 com'è la terra che abita, se buona o cattiva, come sono le città in cui abita, se siano accampamenti o fortificazioni;
20 what sort of land it is, fertile or barren, wooded or open. Be bold, and bring back some of thecountry's produce.' It was the season for early grapes.	20 com'è la terra grassa o magra, se ci sono alberi o no. Siate forti e portate dei frutti della terra". Quei giorni erano i giorni delle prime uve.
21 They went up and reconnoitred the country from the desert of Zin to Rehob, the Pass of Hamath.	21 Quelli salirono ad esplorare la terra dal deserto del Zin fino a Recob, sulla via di Camat.
22 They went up by way of the Negeb as far as Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, theAnakim, lived. (Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis in Egypt.)	22 Salirono nel Negheb e arrivarono fino ad Ebron: là c'era Achiman, Sesai e Talmai, figli di Anak. Ebron era stata costruita sette anni prima di Tanis in Egitto.
23 Reaching the Vale of Eshcol, there they lopped off a vine branch with a cluster of grapes, which twoof them carried away on a pole, as wel as pomegranates and figs.	23 Poi vennero fino alla valle di Escol e vi tagliarono un tralcio con un grappolo d'uva, che portarono con una stanga in due, con melagrane e fichi.
24 This place was called the Vale of Eshcol after the cluster which the Israelites cut there.	24 Quel luogo si chiamò torrente Escol, a causa del grappolo che i figli d'Israele vi avevano tagliato.
25 After forty days they returned from reconnoitring the country.	25 Tornarono dall'esplorazione della terra alla fine di quaranta giorni.
26 Making their way to Moses, Aaron and the whole community of Israel, in the desert of Paran, atKadesh, they made their report to them and the whole community, and displayed the country's produce.	26 Si presentarono a Mosè, Aronne e a tutta la comunità dei figli d'Israele, nel deserto di Paran, a Kades: riferirono l'accaduto a loro e a tutta la comunità e mostrarono il frutto della terra.

28 At the same time, its inhabitants are a powerful people; the towns are fortified and very big; yes, andwe saw the Anakim there.	28 Solo che il popolo che abita nella terra è forte e le città sono fortezze grandissime: vi vedemmo anche gli Anakiti.
29 The Amalekites occupy the Negeb area, the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites the highlands, and theCanaanites the sea coast and the banks of the Jordan.'	29 Gli Amaleciti abitano nella terra del Negheb, gli Hittiti, i Gebusei e gli Amorrei abitano sulla montagna, i Cananei abitano lungo il mare e lungo le rive del Giordano".
30 Caleb called the people round Moses to silence and then said, 'We must march in immediately andtake it; we are certainly able to conquer it.'	30 Solo Caleb fece tacere il popolo che mormorava contro Mosè e disse: "Saliamo e conquistiamola, perché lo possiamo".
31 But the men who had been with him said, 'We cannot attack these people; they are stronger than weare.'	31 Ma gli uomini che erano saliti con lui dissero: "Non possiamo salire contro quel popolo, perché è più forte di noi".
32 And they began disparaging to the Israelites the country they had reconnoitred, saying, 'The countrywe have been to reconnoitre is a country that devours its inhabitants.
